Snowzilla

Anti-Social Darwinism
25-12-2008, 09:00
The snowman has been built for years, getting taller every year. People want to see the snowman and, so, drive by to observe. The neighbors, and the city management don't like it. Ok, so the traffic is congested and it's a bit of a nuisance - for a couple of months. Could a bit of compromise be put to work here? Instead of Cease and Desist orders and fines, put it to use.

The city and the neighbors could get together with Mr. Powers and decorate the whole street, using Snowzilla as a centerpiece, then, for the season, turn it into a one way street, charge a fee (or at least ask for donations) for everyone who goes down the street to see the decorations. The police could put one or two people on traffic control and the donations could go to charity. Or am I wrong?

Sounds like the guy and the city dont get along so hes come up with a people supported, popular FU to the city that he thinks he can get away with and as an added bonus, it makes the city look like a scrooge.

Add a diorama of a snow city in ruins with tiny snowpeople running for their lives?

This is a case of stupidity.

If anyone involved in the city management side had even an ounce of sense, they'd have handed out free hot-chocolate and cookies at the park, to anyone who came to work on this project somewhere designed to take crowds.

Stupid people are stupid.

It's not a park, but someone's home Someone again built the giant snowman in Billy Powers' front yard in an east Anchorage neighborhood.

This...The mayor's office says Powers appears to run a large junk and salvage operation from his home. He has violated land use codes for 13 years, the city said. He owes the city more than $100,000 in fines and other assessments.
Powers said it is the city that has been difficult, not him.
makes me wonder if there's anything else inside that snowman besides snow.

I know. That's the point.

The guy was building what turned out to be a tourist trap, snarling up traffic... on his own land.

If the city had any sense, they'd have sponsored the project (for this 'commodity' there is ALREADY a proven market for) and relocated it somewhere designed to handle crowds. Free hot-chocolate and cookies to locals to build it, the tourists will come to see and stay to shop.. or something.
