What Did the Aliens Want? (spoilers)

i went to see "the day the earth stood still" last week. my sister wanted to go so .... we went.

now lets not bother discussing what a flawed movie it is. its flaws are all too obvious.

but

the crux of the movie is that keanu reeves "klaatu" has come to earth in order to kill off humanity in order to "save the earth". in the end he gets a promise from ONE person that "we will change" and he aborts his deadly mission

the question i am left with is WHAT THE FUCK WAS THEIR PROBLEM?

from the first moment that klaatu tells the sec of defense that its not OUR planet its obvious that we have severe point of view differences. these differences are never resolved.

he tells the jennifer connelly character that we are "destroying the earth".

what the fuck? planets that support complex life are rare we are told and the consortium of alien civilizations will not allow them to be destroyed but humanity is not making the earth unfit for complex life. we have our problems but we are not as deadly as the numerous asteroid strikes that have caused mass extinction events. we are causing the extinction of species but we will are not anywhere near making the earth unfit for life. what is it to THEM if the white rhino goes extinct, for example.

klaatu leaves wih a promise of change but he never spells out just what change is required for us to avoid being wiped out some time in the future. he just leaves with a promise of change. this change is obviously not "living in peace so we dont kill each other any more" since they dont care if we live or die. its not "stop any and all extinctions of any and all species" -- that is well outside our abilities.

so what is it?

is it "knock back your population levels to allow habitat for other species?" is it "stop global warming?" is it "no more nuclear weapons"? "is it "no more adam sandler movies"? (at least we already killed disco!)

this is my question to NSG.

what kind of change would an alien culture require of humanity in order to be judged worthy of continued existence? and just what was their freaking problem in the first place?

To be honest i think hollywood wants to create concerns that are not that underlying in america. (atleast nowhere near the fear of nuclear war during the cold war background of the orginal.)

We elected Obama. The world will be miraculously altered by the waves of "change" emanating from the White House, and we will achieve global enlightenment. We are now safe from aliens killing humanity. :p

but what they are going to do to destroy all humanity is a far worse insult to the environment than anything we have done so far.

Obviously you're missing the point of this utterly gash film. It's like An Inconvenient Truth with better special effects and shit.

wouldn't these 'plot holes' count as to one of the flaws in the movie?

Didn't watch the re-make because I love the original so much, but in the original the deal was basically "kill each other all you want but if you threaten the peace of the universe you're gone".

The police in the original were robots and they would just kill you if you used violence. So like it was "get along or get dead".

From the description it sounds like they are the same as a human government - bumbling along not knowing what they're doing and causing a lot of problems in the process.

but ...... if aliens came to destroy us for bad behavior what would they want us to change in order to survive?

reminds me of an episode of 'the outer limits' where an alien fleet arrives and explains to Humanity that they seeded this planet a long time ago with our anciestors and are dissappointed with how we turned out. so dissappointed in fact that they decided to wipe humanity off the Earth and start again.

after being convinced that we can improve, the alien commander allows us 24 hours to "impress him" but also expresses his doubt that humanity will succeed.

so all the leaders get together and come up with the Universal peace treaty, eveyone signs it and they hand the treaty over to the aliens as proof.

after reading it, the alien laughs "this is why we are disappointed. We want warriors, strong fighters who only desire victory over their enemies, you want peace. this will never do."

so I agree... what is this bad behavior? could it be the fact that we are not allowing our natural environment to evolve because we are trying to 'save species from extinction'? is our 'ravaging the planet' through clearcutting forests or keeping certain trees viable? who's to say.

well yes but they all seemed so SURE of what they meant but i couldnt really figure it out within the context of space aliens who wanted to kill us all (so it can be a war thing) and were destroying all life on the planet themselves which is a far bigger ecological disaster than even the big asteroid strikes of the past.

so im thinking that its some kind of misunderstanding where, because alien civilizations would have their own ways of thinking, what they wanted was something bizarre--like everyone must learn to sing opera while the humans think "oh they want us to get along" (which cant possibly be right).

YEAH thats what im thinking.

in the end klaatu becomes fond of this human woman and her son who he has been running around with and so he decides to stop the destruction of all humanity. it seemed to me like the first human who took a CAT into the house--sure they are kinda destructive but they are so damned cute! i suspect that they decided to keep us as pets.

And youre upset Elian is in Cuba and that Obama isnt going to nuke Castro. Will you two stop bring up your axes to grind into every thread?

Anyway, the movies sounds like the aliens wanted humans to stop destroying earth. Basically it has the currently popular "green" messege. Good messege, too bad its usually in shit movies.

And the original is hardly much better, imo.
