Blindsight (Ex): Using nonvisual senses, such as sensitivity to vibrations, scent, acute hearing, or echolocation, the creature maneuvers and fights as well as a sighted creature. -- Monster Manual, v. 3.0

And then there's this:

A man who completely lost his sight after brain damage has astonished scientists by negotiating an obstacle course without his cane, in a powerful demonstration of an eerie phenomenon known as “blindsight."

Remarkable, if true.

Anyone ever hear of similar phenomena?

I've heard one's other senses improve as sight or hearing deteriorate, though no, I've never heard of something this drastic.

Which suddenly makes me wonder what the status is on cybernetic eye implants. If I remember correctly, they'd managed to achieve something like 16x16 pixel resolution using implants.

There was on the news a while back something about a teenager blind since birth that didn't even need a cane.

those scientist are noobs that was clearly blindsense not blindsight. he simply was able to determine what space the object located. in order to prove blind sight he needs to be able to hit an object with out the reroll. and quote 3.5 rules if your not going to use 4.0.

Sorry, I only had the 3.0 manual at hand at the time. But since you asked:

Blindsight (Ex): This ability is similar to blindsense, but is far more discerning. Using nonvisual senses, such as sensitivity to vibrations, keen smell, acute hearing, or echolocation, a creature with blindsight maneuvers and fights as well as a sighted creature." -- Monster Manual v. 3.5

As opposed to Blindsense, which has a mandatory 50% percentage roll for attacks as if targets had total concealment.

There's only one practical way to determine which it is. We need to force this blind guy to fight off a band of orcs.

the main diffrence between blind sight and blindsense is the 50% chance to fail attacks. since he was jsut avoiding the hex the objects were in this was clearly blindsense. until he makes an unarmed strike agaist semeone and has a high success rate. and I get all rules lawyer but i am at family for the holidays and dont have mmy books.

doesnt have to be orcs... we can do it. in the name of science we need bats and we need to attack this blind guy.

Yeah, but it's funnier with orcs.

And we don't run the risk of getting out asses kicked by a blind guy.

In the little community where I was born, there was a guy who was blind from birth-something to do with the oxygen infants were sometimes kept in. I'd see him now and again needing an escort across a bridge, as water threw his senses off. (He'd navigate by snapping his fingers) We'd just walk him across, but the sheriff would drive him home and give him a white stick-he had quite a collection, as he didn't want to advertise his limitation, and just tossed them in a spare room.
Of course, back in the seventies, there was research into "sonar goggles", but I don't think it went anywhere...

I remember watching a show a while back that dealt with a variety of people whose brains had developed interesting and odd pathways as workarounds for various disabilities. One remarkable man had been blind since birth yet was an accomplished artist and created many works of recognizable objects such as sail boats yet he'd never "seen" them in his life. They ended up getting him to draw the Baptistry in Florence, a 3D object, free hand and he did it perfectly I guess.

You type using a Pulsed Plasma Thruster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulsed_plasma_thruster)? Awesome!

You must have to nail your keyboard down though.

Blindsight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blindsight) is not either of these. It has to do with the fact that in those who possess blindsight, their eyes are perfectly functionable, but due to brain damage they can't consciously process visual while still being able to process it unconsciously, even to the point of being able to pass along some info to the conscious mind.

For similar and dissimilar phenomenon check out Phantoms of the BRain by V. S. Ramachandran (http://www.amazon.com/Phantoms-Brain-Probing-Mysteries-Human/dp/0688172172).
