Movies you just couldn't live without!
So who else here has movies that they just adore, movies that you enjoy so much that you have to watch every time you get a chance to? Basically, what movies are not just your favorites, but ones that you honestly think you could not be the same person without?
Movies on that list for me include:
The Princess Bride
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Labyrinth
The Mirror Mask
Indiana Jones: All four.
Time Bandits
Office Space
Wall-E <--- newest addition to my list
There are others, but I can't think of them right now.

Ok, so can't live without might be a bit of an over statement.
Oh and: Robin Hood Men in Tights, and Spaceballs
Indiana Jones: All four.
Dude... seriously?!
Dude... seriously?!
Seriously. The only reason anybody ever gives me for not liking the fourth movie is it involved aliens.

Meh. It's your thread. I was just being a bit of an asshole realist. Apologies.
Oh and: Robin Hood Men in Tights, and Spaceballs
Oh, come ON. Show some discrimination, why don't you? Those are the two Brooksfilms closest to the bottom of the barrel, just on top of Life Stinks and Dracula: Dead and Loving It. Start at History of the World, Part One and head chronologically backwards, and we can talk.

Birdman of Alcatraz (an amazing film i stumbled across one afternoon If you don't like my other suggestions this one has to be watched, really well done film)
Big Trouble in Little China is a good laugh for the tacky effects bonus
Layer Cake if you want to see Daniel Craig actually fit the role he's meant to be acting (the more recent bond film not worth seeing in my book)
Fight Club (interesting themes and ideas played around with here)
A Bridge too far (I have a likeing for WW2 films)
Pans Labyrinth (interesting film)
Big Lebowski (it's a bizzare cult film, really really odd)
The shining (A horror film that doesn't rely on gore to get the audience kicking)
Me Myself and Irene or Liar Liar (Jim Carrey has the right character for his roles, both quite well done)
Blues Brothers (one of the few musicals i enjoyed)
Naked gun films are quite reliable for a laugh too
Red Dragon interesting again
Scarface (it's okay)
School for Scoundrels (It's funny to pick up the old fashioned and random insults)

Hellraiser + Hellraiser 2 - The cenobite/Hell sequences really helped me loosen up as a storyteller. They also scared me shitless.
Ginger Snaps - It is sort of embarrassing, but this was my introduction to "feminist" fiction that I enjoyed. I don't think I'd have ever gotten into reading Jane Austen or Angela Carter without having seen GS first.
Oldboy - Until I'd seen this, my idea of Asian cinema was just silly Martial Arts movies from the 60's-80's or Black & White snooze fests. The other two movies in the Revenge Trilogy are pretty good, but this one was the ground breaker for me (and my favorite).
Funny Games, Shivers, Leon: The Professional, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, probably a few others. Played a rather interesting role in my early puberty/sexual development.

As awesome as the Road Warrior is (it did set the bar for post-apocalyptic films) I'd say the original Mad Max is a much better film. The Toecutter has got to be one of the coolest, most badass villains caught on camera. He is probably the reason I like The Proposition so much as the character of Arthur Burns seems to be based directly on the Toecutter.

I absolutely enjoyed Dogma. He was so in your face with a few of the issues discussed. And I think truer words haven't been said.

Why the hell does everyone take 'Can't live without' to be literal?

because some people smell like the puss coming out of my big toe.

Wasn't sure, some people demand an apology when they think of me :).
Only when I think of you leering over me, lube in hand, as I sob gently through the ball gag.

Please tell me you meant "pus", and not that you've got either a cat or a vagina emerging from your hallux.

That was only once, and I was at a low point in my life.
Thank god the police arrested me and made me realize what I was doing.
Next time I'll disconnect the phone lines.

I'm not sure what I would do if I lived in a world where there was no Animal House.
Other than that, Say Anything. Guilty pleasure? Almost certainly, but it makes me happy.

Anything by Kevin Smith, except maybe Clerks 2.
Clerks 2 is phenominal soley because they keep playing King Diamond in it.

"I can't believe I threw up in front of Dean Wormer."
"Face it, Flounder, you threw up on Dean Wormer."
I guess I do have one entry:
Grosse Pointe Blank.
Promises, promises.
You dropped the charges, that means you were totally into it!
In other news, the Life of Brian and A Clockwork Orange gets my juices flowin'.
No I am not rephrasing that last part!
I shudder to think.
Good movies both but ... if you won't rephrase I'll :gas:.
Yeah, my ex was one of those few poor souls.
It's okay, something about Bond gets me "happy", too. ;)
Perhaps that's why ex?
Bond is a chance to live up to all your potential, to be able to do all that, without having to actually join a secret service and worry about all that that entails (who's giving the orders anyway and would you take them if you knew?). Life's complicated and full of excuses and bad calls; Bond is simple. happy.
Ooops over thunk

Yeah i think so, I am about 99% certain she was saying "James Bond is Sexy"

Who's she?
Oh. I see. Sigh, you're right.
Look, girl, you want a James Bond you can have him. But only once. Plenty of them in the sea.

Hmm so you think maybe if I work on my Sean Connery impression?

This is, of course, impossible. Have breakfast at Milliway's.
I do. Every day. ;)
Anyway, why not? I think Birds and Psycho are quite overrated.

Drama:
The Dirty Dozen
The Sting
Ben-Hur
The Ten Commandments
The Matrix
Terminator 2
You call these "drama"? Ok, watching Matrix is a dramatical experience enough (more or less like crossing the English Channel during a major storm... two hours of vomiting  )... but I wouldn't place them in the "drama" category.
Looking at the mentions so far I reconise and apprecite these:
A Clockwork Orange
Bond
Bill and Ted
Bladerunner
Casablanca
Fifth Element
Gone With The Wind
Immortal Beloved
Labyrinth
Laputa
Layer Cake
Leon: The Professional
Mad Max
Monsters inc.
My Fair Lady
Singin' in the Rain
Star Wars series...
the First Matrix...
The Lion King
The Matrix
The Princess Bride
The Thin Red Line
Three Kings
Twelfth night
300
But there are quite a few in here I think I shall have to see as the above list is full of holes and context requirements.
How do you guys remember all the movies that fit this box? I change too often to want the same box and I don't own much ... this is fascinating, maybe another memory will pop out with another recommendation.
Ones I can think of not so far mentioned:
Red Sorghum (actually anything by same producer. Also try Zhu Dou and others of the same era)
Dr Zhivago (better after reading One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich)
The Dark Crystal (I was very young)
The piano
and I'm a sucker for anything derived from Heinlein, Arthur C Clarke, Asimov or H G Wells. It looks as thouhg there're quite a few on the list anyway so I'm guessing some of you know what I mean.

Heh, I don't lol.

Ergo this post?

I was answering, I don't remember them all. I type like I talk a lot of times.

My coach would not like him, either, if he did not teach you foil first.

Set your mind at rest. I knew foil (and only foil) when I met him, though he still kept me on it for best part of a year before handing me an epee.
Frankly, I'm surprised you aren't questioning how an epee coach came to devise one of the most over-the-top swordfight scenes in 20th century movie history. But I guess the answer's in the question - it's a movie.

Drama, action, historical epic, whatever. Close enough. No use splitting hairs on a list like this.
Now if you were wondering why I included certain films, that's another question.
railfan tapes of narrow gauge multiple units and furry anime.
actually i live without consumer media just fine, but as for what i find gratifying, first and primarily those above. well done speculative fiction with believable effects, consistent with known science and their own universe also of course. the more believably alien the better.
movies are too damd expensive anyway. movies too damd expensive and broadcast visiual media tends to be corporate crap. the only broadcast media for me, is local community noncomercial independent radio. even that, this participatory internet is preferable to.

Easily the original trilogy or Star Wars. The prequels were utter crap.
