What are you listening to these days?

I did a rock thread earlier, but this time I want to branch out to all music.

What do you listen to? Who are your favorite artists/bands? What are you top 10 albums of all time? Do you prefer CD, Cassette, 8-Track or good old Vinyl? Do you have a massive record collection? Or are you just really starting to get into music and need help finding out some good bands? Who are the greats? and who just plain sucks.

Discuss it all here.

I basically listen to all things rock, some good old new wave, metal, blues, old-school rap, and just about anything but country.

I was listening to "The Name of This Band is Talking Heads" and it inspired me to create this thread.

Well, I'm starting to find my inner hippie with a bunch of sixties bands I've started listening to.

And of course, I still listen to Led Zeppelin, Rush, Queen, The Who, and all of them. I don't have a top ten album list, but number one is definitely Physical Graffiti.

I can honestly say that Cutless is pure crap. (All my Christian friends "Ohhh, yeah, they're the greatest!" pfft)

In fact, right now I'm listening to a non-crappy band, White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. Most of my music is on the computer.

Oh, and I despise rap.

any artists in particular?

The Rover, and Down by the Seaside are my favorite tracks from PG. I must say I do not have a favorite Zeppelin Album, unless you count their BBC Sessions, that compliation is pure, raw, unfiltered Zeppelin. BBC Sessions is the only Zeppelin album that I will listen to every time like it is my first time.

I loved Airplane, but they lost their edge when they became starship.

Oh, and I despise rap.

I liked rap from the 80s but thats about it unless you count Public Enemy of the 90s.

And your assortment of new stuff, rap, rock, hip-hop, jazz, R&B, no pop or country, though.

The same goes for me and the Talking Heads, one day while at work I turned on the bosses computer and opened his WMP and just clicked on a random song while cleaning up. And it was Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" album. Psycho Killer was the song, from the first note, I was hooked.

GFR is awesome BTW.

Lately? Been listening to Jefferson Airplane, Faith No More, Mr Bungle, Kyuss.

I'm also getting into the Grateful Dead who are significantly folksier and softer than I imagined them, and the Melvins. I downloaded the Buffalo Springfield discography, which admittedly I didn't like at first, but now I like quite a lot. Always been a big fan of Crosby, Stills and Nash, and Neil Young as a solo artist.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor is quite good, and I love the whole grating moving in and out for thirty minutes thing.

Johnny Cash's American IV: The Man Comes Around is a great album, is that classed as county? On the rap-side, I have listened to a little Wu-tang in the pass, and N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton.

Some good old Zeppelin as always, and Mark Lanegan Band is nice, if a bit soft. Studied Easy Rider this year, and I love the sound track which had some Dylan covers, by the Byrds, so I "obtained" that album. Loving it.

I've got really into mindless indie crap lately: Headlights, Stars, Frou Frou, Rilo Kiley, Ratatat, Seabear, The Shins, The Submarines, The Unicorns.

Elsewhere I made a - now slightly out of date - 'top 10 of 2008':

Chumbawamba - The Boy Bands Have Won
Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes
Hot Chip - Made in the Dark
Aimee Mann - @#%&*! Smilers
Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling
Portishead - Third
The Rolling Stones - Shine a Light
Sigur Rós - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust
Southern Tenant Folk Union - Revivals, Rituals & Union Songs

That was before Cardinology came out, and I think I'd add in Some Racing, Some Stopping, and on reflection I might have added in Ray LaMontagne's Gossip in the Grain, School of Seven Bells's Alpinisms, Okkervil River's The Stand-Ins, and definitely Van She's V.

Format wise? I have about a hundred vinyls, but for convenience sakes I mostly listen to MP3s.

I just returned from a medieval/Renaissance music vocal concert; "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" was one of the songs. It was fabulous, the entire concert was.
So I guess to answer the OP, for the past twenty minutes I've been listening to that type of music on YouTube. I still wholeheartedly support the Talking Heads, though. A dream of mine is to become a motivational speaker and just recite "Once In A Lifetime" as a speech, see if anyone notices.

My list hasn't gotten any stranger.
I'm basically doing Pandora's Herbie Hancock-esque jazz collection, along with Andy Summers, Eric Serra, John Petrucci, Aphex Twin, Captain Beefheart, Adrian Legg, The Platters/Sam Cooke, Thomas Newman, Front Line Assembly and my litany of practice discs that sponsor so many different artists it really isn't worth the text to go on about it.

As a good, loyal citizen of Zepland, I listen to Led Zeppelin. Anpu frowns on people who don't listen to Led Zeppelin. All of Zepland frowns on those thta don't listen to Zeppelin. I have the box set with all nine albums and every song they ever released, which makes Zepland happy.

As I'm back at home over Christmas, I'm currently digging back into the awful nu-metal collection from my teenage years, just for lulz. Aside from that I'm listening to the stuff I usually mention, Unexpect, Sigh, Between the Buried and Me, Genghis Tron, and Volbeat.

Ha, a few days ago I burnt a copy of a Twisted Christmas and stuck it in the CD changer that my mom had stuffed full of traditional Christmas music. It was rather entertaining.

I just spent the last hour listening to 10 different versions of 'hallelujah'.

The Leonard Cohen version is hilariously crooning, but the best really is KD Lang at the Sydney Royal Opera house (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UlZZbVyJtY) (IMHO etc etc)

All prompted by the abortion of a version by the winner of X-Factor being Xmas number 1 in the UK. I had to cleanse myself by finding a better rendition.

Black Sabbath, mostly. The Paranoid album. I usually just put my Winamp on shuffle. Other artists: Budgie, AC/DC, Motorhead, Metallica, and some other metallers. I've actually been listening to the Animals recently, cause I got into them from "House of the Rising Sun" and just took off from there. And my friend literally JUST (as in 3 minutes ago) got me an Animals compilation (The Singles +).
