About three months ago, I had a discussion with one of my NSG brethren currently living in Japan(was it you, Nervun?) regarding the shocking lack of decent cheese there and elsewhere. So moved by his cheese-deprivation that I took it upon myself to research methods of shipping cheese to Japan. I was shocked and dismayed at the lack of options. Most gourmet companies and cheese specialists will not ship overseas, and though there are a few companies that will ship gift baskets with fruits, wines and small samplings of cheeses to Japan, they demand obscene prices.

This is shameful! It's the 21st fuckin' century and there are people living in modern industrial nations without easy access to cheese! Something must be done about this! Ideas?

Make cheese?

That's all well and good, but how do I get it to Japan?

Do you have anyone who can buy cheese where they live and mail it to you? That's the only thing I can think of if you can't get shipped directly from the company.

Well, Belgium is having some financial problems. Maybe we could move Japan there, then Nervun would have access to all the finest European cheeses without having to worry about oversea transport.

Moving Japan to Belgium? Brilliant! You can have the latest technology while drinking the best beer and eating some of the finest cheese. Japan will be #1 in the world in no time.

Would it be worth having to live with Belgians? Hmm.... careful study is needed.

Ok what if we bought rounds of drinks for all belgians, and just when they are really pissed, Japan invades with a full scale assault. Everyone wins, except of course for the Belgians, but they had it coming.

Part of the deal is that the Belgians will leave the whole country to the Japanese, in return for which the Japanese will undertake all Belgium's debts.
But what of the Belgians? They can move in with the Dutch. As I understand it, the Dutch own both Holland and the Netherlands, but they can't possibly need both of those countries, so they should have no trouble letting the Belgians move into one.

Madison, WI is a sister city to Obihiro, Japan. New York, NY and Paris, France are sister cities to Tokyo, Japan. Los Angeles is a sister city to Nagoya, Japan. Maybe we can solve the problem with care packages? They can send us oddities we can't get here, and we can send them cheeses in return. There'd be little risk involved, and no one would have to participate who didn't want cheese. :)

Have a, 'whoops, sorry we nuked your cities, here's some cheese' food drive, and then use some of those obsolescent bombers to carpet bomb Japan's cities with cheddar.

Hell, do it in Canada too while you're at it. I needs me some more cheese.

Would shipping cows + cheesemaking equipment not be cheaper ?
One assumes the Japanese have grass...

Could they not try to airdrop cheese into tokyo?

I hear Scottish Whisky is also a real favourite among them too. Could be a good market for these two very common products of Scotland.

Failing an airdrop why can't they do a simple revolving service;
The ships that drop off various cargo's from Japan to America could take up a few crates of cheese back, and so on.

Ship milk via UPS Ground or something. By the time it winds up in Japan you may have any variety of cheese.

This is a good idea, but the cheese would have to be churned (or go through rough seas) to make it better.
But the idea of shipping milk seems sound to me.

genetically engineered cows?
can you imagine what the Japanese would do to them? with their grasp of technology they'l add about 20 udders to be poor creature and give it a metal jaw (to process the extra grass), it'l have to eat stones to digest the amount of stuff it's given.

besides think of the disaster scenario, a genetically engineered cow goes rampant in a Japanese city, now we know most of their walls are made of paper, so security would clearly be a major concern for the cow orientated Japanese person.

Overall LG makes a good point, why is there not more cheese in Japan?
Get them into cheese, perhaps some like it so much they start moving to Switzerland or Holland for the cheese they make there, or Britain.
Who know the potential of this product?

Hmm. Possibly it is considered "yucky" ?
After all, we frown at eating insects which is quite common in certain parts of Africa. However, those same Africans may well vomit if you told them we eat congealed milk.

Then again, is there anything the Japanese would not try ?

From what I've seen the japanese do to food, I'm not sure if they can be trusted with cheese production. *nod*

Let's see - we send handcrafted Mozarella, they send raw squid. We send aged bleu, they send raw sea bass. We send Parmegianno Regianno, they send raw whale.

Seems like a fair trade to me.
