Boston area meetup next month?

Neo Art

So, all you Mass. people, we had a little discussion going around a few months ago discussing having a bit of a gathering. Then, as New Years approaches, we seem to be having a few other non bostonians coming to the area (Poli and Aerou at least), so I was thinking, since we're going to have a air number of people, we should go ahead with it.

By my count we will have at least 6 people in and around the Boston area this month/early next month, so what do y'all say? I'm thinking January 3rd, a weekend for those of us who work around here, but early enough from New Years that our out of towners wouldn't have left yet.

But I don't WANT to be an honorary German; I want to be an actual, present, partying German. So I shall continue my sulking until somebody kindly offers to fly be back and forth with their private jet or something.

Balls.

Is there never a gathering the the Pacific North-wet? (Thought it's less wet here in Spokane than it is covered in two feet of champagne powder.)

Oh, you call one (and do the jet/airfare thing) and there's gonna be one (of at leats two people, i.e. you and me).

Also: Champagne powder? *clueless, yet intrigued*
ETA: True to my own beliefs, I retract my question re: something that has a wiki article.

Good. I literally start pounding my fist whenever I see people ask wiki-able definitions online (and actually, I'm even pedantic/elitist/grumpy/whatever enough to also get angry when people do not venture over to google/urbandictionary/acronymfinder before asking - I mean, it's the internet; we're sitting on information), and I was terribly embarrassed to have fallen into the same trap for a second there.

Well, not only him. Seeing how certain people's funds appear to be limited, maybe all we can do is fly SoWiBi to someplace cheaper than Boston, e.g. M's location, and then they could pick me up from there as well.

Yes, I'm aware of Boston's location, and it's relative proximity to Germany, but IF for some bizarre reason flying a longer way in WOULD be cheaper...

Well, then I guess the news are even better: The lucky driver will not have to make two lonely rides, but have fabulous me on board for entertainment - and they can pride themselves of having given a Boston-Main sightseeing tour to a nice German lady. How's that?

Bangor has an International Airport (they claim), but you'd likely have to fly to Boston to get here.

Green line gov't center T stop, across the street. Alternatively, somewhere in Brookline works also, as it saves me the issue of travel, but most people coming into the city will be on the Park/South Station/North Station side of things, as opposed to far flung coolidge corner.

Both are about equally accessable for me...I live on the B line and 66 bus line...but don't know anything about Brookline other than it is a bitch to drive through on the Sabbath.

I've seen it before. On truly magical nights when the temperature drops well below zero and the winds gust to 20 mph, you must go to the bus station and sit for three hours. One will magically appear, only to drive right past you because it is too full, and you will get the joy of hailing a cab.

so I'm not the only one who has had that joy? Boston buses are usually fairly good, I don't know what it is about the 66. I guess it's because it has to go through Roxbury/Dorchester, and as such, spends a good portion of its journey dodging roving biker gangs mad max style.

the 66 and 57 both suck. I'm willing to bet it is because they have to go through the student ghetto, and Menino hates us.

The 86 sucks as well. And so does the 91. Both (fail to) service my neighborhood.

Actually, the downtown financial area (around Kinsales, Houston's, several other places) would work best for me, primarily because I already know my way around there and I'm lazy as shit.

Why Boston, and why not Chicago, or New York? Not that it affects me (not sure if I'll have a chance to leave St. John's let alone the Newfoundland island next month) but I would've figured that since both were bigger cities, they'd be more likely to have members in their metropolitan areas, and that while Chicago is in the middle of the North American continent, New York is the biggest city in the US, and is still very close to other major US cities...

Fair enough. I would've expected the population of NSGers to be proportional to the general population, but for whatever reason I guess that isn't the case. Anyway, make sure to get plenty of videos of the meetup to post; maybe do things around the city too, maybe show people who are going to the meetup from outside Boston around... not that I've ever been there myself though.

So I'll time the fireworks to go off every 5 minutes while the stereo blares "Stars and Stripes Forever"

you've been looking into my bedroom again haven't you? But frankly, I prefer the entire orchestra ensemble.

I think they should record a live, realtime debate, that would be hilarious.
And awesome. I think it would be interesting for those who only know each other through the Internet to meet in person, let alone debate in person. I'm not sure if it's necessary to do it live, but maybe they could record it from various camera angles and splice up the footage or something. But yeah, and don't just debate either, maybe have them as a group go on some of the Boston trains and busses I've heard about... wait, how many people do you expect to see at the meetup?

oh FINE.

You can hold the camera. Just, you know, be quite and don't let me remember you're there.
But let him make enough noise that I'm aware of him. I'll need something to think about. ;) :p

might be worth it. Poli will be in a geeky shirt, so will Mur. Sark will be pantless and I'll probably just trying to put enough distance between me and him in case I see anyone I know :p
Actually, I'll probably be the best dressed of the lot of you. :p And my t-shirt will be hidden under a sweater on account of it's January. :D

Okay, so I got on the phone and made certain I have no demands on me for the evening. I'll be there. You all had better show the hell up.

Just got in. Glad we all instinctively head straight to NSG.

By the way, a sweater may have been nice for my walk from the T, much as I hate to admit it.

I'm down. Made much easier now that I actually have a clue whom I am looking for. Since I think I scared some poor redhead by walking up to her and saying "Are you looking for people that you don't know what they look like?"

I'm telling you. Tequilla. All my best stories start there.

Though, I'm wearing four leaf clover boxers, so would have fit the bar well.

Hehe, so Mur mentioned. Our theory was that people just thought you were a gigolo looking for clients.

Pfft, clearly I should have made NA quit buying me drinks and buy you drinks instead.

I could have swapped from beer to tequilla and been about equal...but I only really feel comfortable taking my pants off in trashy Allston bars.

Dude. I came from the game. And it's not like I wore a pink hat. It was a legit Bergeron jersey. And I may have initially given the bartender my ticket instead of my ID because a) I'm kinda slow and b) it was folded up where I usually keep my ID

So not "that guy". That Guy wears a KG jersey. Or Teck.

What's this? You're wearing the shirt of the band you're going to see? Don't be that guy.

but it's different with sports teams! I mean, I didn't buy the jersey at that particular game...I made an investment so I could be lazy and never have to think about what is appropriate to wear to a B's game. See? Totally different. I swear.

And you get a BS in gameboy for the reference.

And "that guy" could have been any number of guys in Boston. I knew he said he'd probably be in a Bruins shirt, and the whole LOOOOONG time we sat there waiting for your sorry asses, I was thinking 'is that Sarkhaan?' But I was damned if I was going to go asking any random Boston guy in a Bruins shirt if he was waiting for a woman he'd never seen before. If he wasn't I could have spent the rest of the night doing that everywhere I went. :D I'm glad he decided to do the awkward before I was forced to.

There are none, unless the bar had security cameras.

EDIT: Say, Sarkhaan and Neo, you guys know more area bars than I do. Wasn't there some place called The Rack or something -- a billiards bar -- that had a live webcam? We should do the next meet up there.
