Yep. The "credit crisis" claims yet another victim. This time it seems first minister Leterme of Belgium abused his political influence when Fortis bank went bankrupt, was nationalised and sold to Paribas. Today he did not show up to explain himself in front of the rest of the government, which is now deciding what to do.

Thoughts on our ever growing crisis ? On which country will be the next to not just suffer economically, but politically as well ?

And what should we do with Iceland and Belgium ?

Most Dutch would not object to re-unification with Flanders - especially since it would give the Netherlands control over two of the largest ports in the world (Rotterdam and Antwerp), as well as adding international airports, reinforcing the"gateway to Europe" status.

And of course, it would mean the Dutch would no longer lose "het nationaal dictee" every year ;)

"The national dictation/exam" - a yearly evening filling tv show where the candidates are supposed to write down a dictated text with quite a few esoteric and/or difficult to spell words. The person with the least mistakes is almost always from Flanders.

Writing as very probably the only person on NSG to have lived in both Iceland and Belgium (albeit Walloonia, not Flanders), my solution is....

I have no idea, really.

But I would like to - slightly humourlessly, perhaps - point out that the financial meltdown in Iceland is on a different order of economic and political misery than Leterme's proposed resignation over the Fortis break-up.

Iceland's problems are specifically and solely rooted in the over-extension of Icelandic credit during the recent economic boom, and those chickens coming home to roost through the subsequent worldwide contraction of credit.

Belgium's current government crisis may have been precipitated by a specific action taken by the current government during the credit crisis, but the broader constitutional problem stems from an ongoing weakness in the Belgian state as currently conceptualised that would have almost inevitably led to another governmental crisis no matter what the immediate catalyst.

Win for me as a country with that good of beer should be under my control. And when for them as a new overlord means all debts canceled.

From personal experience, Icelandic chicks (Bjork included) are not necessarily hot, but definitely FUCKING MENTAL.

every society has inbreds. but id say on average the US is one of the most genetically mixed societies in the world. UK is also pretty high up there.
I think a few City states are more so maybe.
