Now I'm quite an old boy, but I have always loved Janis.

When she sings you know she means it, I would say that we have not had a singer with her gut wrenching, emotional wrought, vocal talent since.

Am I right?

Yeah she was good, though I have always preferred Nina Simone or Aretha Franklin when I am in the mood for a bit emotional pain.

Yeah Nina was good also, and I just remebered Johnny Cash.

Still though, there is summit special about Janis.

My uncle played me some Joplin when I was about 14 and I was blown away. I always thought he was an old fuddy duddy till he played me that and then told me he saw Led Zep in concert too. Funny how one little thing can alter how you view someone

Just listening to some Etta James - maybe junkies just don't sing as well as they used to, though Amy Winehouse seems to be trying her best.

Might as well place a couple of songs...

This is my favourite, though I don't know why - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WISX2oSExIA&feature=related

Though she's probably more famous for this...

For some reason I was reading up on the Beat generation and how it segued into the Haight-Ashbury scene the other day, probably collecting evidence against hippies but it just seems there was originality and culture from those times that have oft been imitated but never quite achieved.

For Nina Simone fans, try find the Remixed and Reimagined album, a great album.

Just to imagine being at Monterey - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb4t0Mxq3J4&feature=related

Another event I noticed was the Six Gallery readings in '55, where Ginsberg first read Howl but it seemed the apex of the Beat generation.

One of my favourite books remains The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, especially when one's reads through Kerouac, Burroughs and onto Kesey.

Imagine being a Neal Cassady, the whole era is fascinating.

She wasn't a pretty lass...

Fuck me! Like I said when she sings you know she means it. I've gone all goosebumpy now.

No she was not a pretty lass, awesome, but not pretty at all.

Was that Mama Cass I saw in the audiance with her mouth hanging open there?

Here's another Nina Simone remix, I actually met Felix da Housecat and complained that I'd bought his Playboy House album, which sucked, he was pretty pissed and said Dj's sometimes do these albums for the money, I asked if I could have my money back then.

Anyway, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BxTsPYUIvw&feature=related

Oy music...

The best remix ever of an old song, however, is this...

you dont hear people sing like that because it rips your vocal cords to shreds. if she hadnt died she would have lost what voice she had.

As Ash said, Joplin was one-of-a-kind largely because what she did was horribly bad for her voice. No one would imitate her today unless they wanted to guarantee themselves a short, if awesome, life as a singer.

Janis is a direct link to the kind of life and emotive power that was first really heard and recorded in Billie Holiday. Those two are soul sisters expressing similar kinds of pain in two very different styles and eras, but the link is unmistakable.

I prefer Ann Wilson of Heart-she has incredible power, range and can be soft or screaming

I don't think thats the quality I love so much. It the shear emotion in the voice rather than the throat ripping sound she produces.
