Illinois legislators took the first steps on Monday toward impeaching Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich, six days after his arrest on charges of corruption and soliciting bribes that included trying to sell the vacated Senate seat of President-elect Barack Obama.
As Mr. Blagojevich kept working in his Chicago office with no signs of resigning, the Obama transition team announced that an internal review found that the president-elect’s advisers had not been “not involved in inappropriate discussions” with the governor or his staff. At a news conference in Chicago to announce the latest members of his cabinet, Mr. Obama reiterated the statement, saying he would adhere to a request by federal prosecutors to withhold the release of the review until next week.
Owned. Well, hes screwed.
Also mentioned, Obama has been cleared of wrong doing. And before any of you out there scream "WHY ISNT HE RELEASING THE REPORT?!? THIS ISNT THE CHANGE WE WERE PROMISED!!!!" notice the article says the federal prosecutors are asking him not to release it.
Anyway, how will the impeachment pan out? Whats next for IL politics? Will our next Gov go to jail?

Although there is no evidence whatsoever that Obama or anyone associated with him did anything wrong related to this case, it is a bit of a stretch to say "Obama has been cleared of wrongdoing" just because an internal Obama team review found nothing wrong.

As has been addressed, I missed that. The public "ought" to not disagree, however, especially because the Federal Prosecuters and FBI, who had Blago's phones tapped, said they have no evidence that Obama hasnt done anything either.
Anyway...

Hopefully the impeachment will proceed according to plan and his ass will be out of office and in the slammer (or fined, or whatever the punishment is in these cases) before Obama gets into office.

Yes but......why are Americans so tolerant of wiretapping and phonetapping?
(It's okay! More of a rhetorical question really. We've well and truly caught this American disease here in Australia.)
I guess the point I'm trying to make is....who authorised the initial investigation? Does the ant-trail lead back to a Republican who had him in his sights?

I guess the point I'm trying to make is....who authorised the initial investigation? Does the ant-trail lead back to a Republican who had him in his sights? No, Patrick Fitzgerald is an excellent prosecutor who has a track record of going after crimes in both parties. He's already convicted a Republican governor.
Blagojevich was under investigation because something like a dozen separate people filed accusations against him, and because he was linked to other corruption cases already underway. He had to have known that his phones were tapped.

He comes across as dumb as doggy doo.
However, maybe the investigators weren't too smart if they leaked the story while he was only conspiring....if money hadn't changed hands can they nail him for a crime? Maybe they just wanted him out.
Like I said, I have no brief for this clown but the justice department's role in this seems kind of skanky.

It doesn't matter if the money did not actually change hands. They have him recorded saying he intended to commit a felony. Conspiracy to commit is still a crime.

Depends, doesn't it?

Which is why they wouldn't take the evidence from one phone call and one phone call alone. You ring people up offering them political power for money, several times, and your excuses like 'eh I was fantasising' fall on their arse and die.

But he wasn't only joshing/fantasizing/hypothesizing. He made serious plans to sell the seat. He lined up potential buyers.
If you said to me "Let's rob Yootopia's piggy bank" and it never went beyond that, then no, we couldn't be charged with anything. But if we got recorded talking about how we were going to sneak in while Yootopia was out and steal the piggy bank, then we could.

You know, it took a lo-o-o-ng time for Nixon to quit. It took months and months of trial by media....and the Washington Post had the tapes. That was the heroic thing.
If the prosecution took this to a jury trial, they woul;d have to justify why they were taping the Governor of Illios - and on whose authority and why they leaked vital evidence to the media.....it could get very sticky for them and a jury could let Blago walk.

He is trying for a deal:
impeachment process set in motion for Illinois Governor
Ewen Macaskill, Chicago
December 17, 2008
THE embattled Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, is clinging to office as politicians set in motion proceedings to impeach him.
Ignoring political and public calls to stand aside, Blagojevich, a Democrat, again turned up for work.
The Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, Mike Madigan, said Blagojevich had for six days ignored calls to resign after being arrested last week on charges of conspiracy and soliciting bribes over the replacement for President-elect Barack Obama's vacant US Senate seat.
As a result, Mr Madigan said he was establishing a special committee of the Illinois legislature to investigate the scandal and decide on impeachment.
Legislators launched a hastily called session on Monday to discuss holding a special election to take the appointment out of Blagojevich's hands, as impeachment proceedings could take months.
Illinois Attorney-General Lisa Madigan, the Speaker's daughter, has also asked the state Supreme Court to temporarily remove Blagojevich from office or strip him of the bulk of his powers because of his arrest.
The court was also due to consider an appeal from Ms Madigan to have him declared unfit to hold office.
The public mood in Chicago appears to be overwhelmingly against Blagojevich.
There is resentment that the feel-good factor created by Mr Obama's victory last month has given way to embarrassment and anger that the city is again associated with alleged political corruption.
Although no direct link has been made between Mr Obama and Blagojevich, who were political rivals in Chicago, the scandal has taken some of the gloss off Mr Obama's victory.
Chicago television stations quoted sources close to Blagojevich saying he intended to fight the charges and carry on in office.
But he is cash-strapped after large legal bills related to earlier inquiries, and may be looking for a deal in return for standing down.

No you didn't. That would have been monumentally stupid of you. You were not in the least bit confused since you are functionally literate and a title referring to a 'Hes' would not be worded "Hes screwed." Stop throwing your punctuation hissy fit. We don't need your class to graduate.
