What's the appeal of beer? The taste or what? I don't like beer. I say if you must get drunk, or buzzed, do it right. Hard liquor.

I don't drink now, but when I did I'd prefer serious liquor not beers. Recently all I take is caffeine, though not at the moment. It's not really good for you when you have chronic sleeping problems. It just masks exhaustion but it's still there.

Yeah, but if you're in a drinking session, it's quite hard to drink spirits. Having a friendly chat over a vodka & coke isn't quite the same as a good pint of bitter, I find.

And as for the drugs thing, I've done a bit of the smelly green stuff, but all I do is stop talking for a hour and lose any sense of taste and smell, so I can take it or leave it, to be honest.

Caffeine is my drug of choice, though I tried nicotine, alcohol and Marijuana (to my defense: I was in the netherlands at that time) and binaural beats (well, I still use these occasionally).

My strongest drug-like experiences are rather tame: I used to deprive myself of sleep to hallucinate.

I have never used any medication I havn't been prescribed or could get over the counter, I rarely drink and am drunk even more rarely, and I won't touch any of the illegal drugs. I have little enough control over my mind.

I've seen to many bright people get fucked up by drugs (as in illegal drugs) to go down that road. I have tried weed and cigarettes, neither of which posed any great advantages over not using them.

I drink alcohol, generally of any type. I do not drink to get wasted however, rather choosing to drink to relax (either in social situations or by myself)

I use prescription and pharmacy meds as required. Certainly don't abuse them however. I do have to take hay fever tabs (usually loratadine, but I try to alternate to avoid long term effects and my body getting used to it and the immune system working around it)

Prescription drugs

Xanax - around 16 use to lift my dads blues on and off for a couple months one summer. Was taking 4 or 5 at a time. Wasn't drinking with them, thank god! I was using them instead of drinking. I'm still surprised something bad didn't happen to me. I haven't touched them since nor desired to. If I could take back anything it would be these and the glue. Two different summers gone, with too many brain cells killed.

Codeine - Legit. Got prescribed after having my wisdom teeth pulled. It was alright, but I never went about trying to get any for recreational use.

Valium - a hand full of times and always liked it, but they wore off super fast.

Vicodin - a couple times and never understood the big deal .. I actually don't remember feeling much of anything. I don't remember the potency of the ones I took though.

Oxycontin - once when I was drinking -- didn't enjoy it.

Last 6-7 years, booze. I plan to smoke pot again though. Hopefully quitting smoking (cigs) and just blazing bowls, and cut back on my drinking.

When it comes to illicit drugs: I've tried are speed and extacy. I've also had a tiny little nibble of a mushroom. And I smoke pot.

Obviously the legal "drugs": caffiene, nicotine and alcohol.

I've also tried those 'herbal highs'.

Oh, and a variety of prescription medications, the more interesting ones being: Duromine (phentermine), dexamphetamines, valproic acid, fluoxetine, amitriptyline, imipramine, trimipramine, sertraline, Xanax, tramadol...

i discouvered chemically altering my perception was personally nongratifying, so why persue it?

i've smoked a little herb, yes i did inhale, ate a few psilosibe shrooms, and dropped a total of two hits of king lysergis, all many years ago. there was also some animal tranc i snorted then along with a couple of lines of the so called nose candy.

oh yah, it all messed with my head like it was supposed to alright, but it still didn't gratify anything, so that was the end of it for me. same goes for booze.

(never got busted for/with any of it either. i think that may have had something to do with not attracting attention to my indulging in such things by acting like an idiot, nor pushing my luck otherwise by consuming mass quantities either.)

The only ones I 'continue' to do is weed and 'shrums. I haven't been able to buy weed since April and I haven't had the conditions to do 'shrums in years. (you have to be in a good mood and I find that I have to be in a neat environment because my usual mess starts to wig me out.)

The way to look cool on NSG is to say you've tried liberal atheism and bisexuality a couple of times, had a bad experience with libertarianism, but now stick to more mainstream agnostic socialism 'cos you're getting older and can't handle it anymore, got kids etc.

Mescaline was a pretty life changing experience for me, and atm I'm supposed to source some more for someone who could really use it. Other than that I'm mostly a fan of the feel-good drugs, uppers whenever, and downers and opiates when I wanna cotch.

I'm sure someone will be nitpicky and underhand and say I've almost certainly had painkiller drugs and alcohol- so I hold my hands up to that. But I've never had anything illegal or barely legal in the sense it fucks your head up. People do these drugs to have a good time and enjoy themselves, fair play to you people, but I don't need weed or lark like that to have a good time because i'm uber fun to be about anyway.

People have motivations that aren't just self-advancement in the eyes of others, especially yours. People do actually gain a benefit from drugs, or alternatively can spiral into addiction. You make it sound like you doubt they "do anything". Kind of the same opinion as a friend of mine, when we went camping, he was the only person abstaining. He said something along the lines of "Drugs just give you an excuse to act like kids". Not true.

Actually, there is a very good reason for using heroin or similar strong opiates, apart from medicinally as painkillers, that is. If you have no sex life, and no prospect of ever getting a sex life (for whatever reason, be it lack of confidence or lack of potency), then heroin makes sex completely un-necessary.

Personally though, I have never tried any opiate stronger than tramadol or codeine. I tend to prefer tramadol though, largely because it kills both physical pain (through acting like an opiod) and mental pain (because it is also a mild serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor).

I have also tried valium, which is very nice indeed (although nowhere near as addictive as some people claim). Stilnox / Ambien are both almost as good as valium, and much easier to get hold of since they are technically not benzodiazepines (their chemical structure is significantly different from benzo's, even though the effects are about the same). Combining about 10 mg of either valium or ambien with at least 60 mg of codeine produces a very nice effect indeed, in my experience.

I'm also a big fan of carisoprodol (soma) and diphenhydramine (benadryl or nytol), especially by combination. Guaranteed to induce sleep no matter how stressed out I am.

First of all, Oxycodone and Dexedrine are NOT over the counter. Both are schedule II.

Second, caffeine, cough medicine, alcohol, tobacco, Dexedrine, marijuana, and cocaine are not narcotics. Oxycodone and heroin are.

sadly, as is so often the case, that very broad sense of the word is bastardized to the point where it really has no meaning. The word for any substance that dulls or alleviates pain is "analgesic".

May be somewhat pendantic, but there is a massive difference between NSAIDs, COX-2 inhibitors, and opiates and related drugs...one that is significant and important enough to maintain a seperation between "narcotic" and "analgesic"

narcotics are specifically opiates. For the most part, your definition is actually very accurate, though there may be some analgesics that cause drowsiness that are not opiates...

Again, it might be a bit pendantic, but when the doctor says "are you or have you been on any narcotics over the last year?", it's good to know.

That would have to be tobacco. Much as I love to drink, and I do, I can go for a fairly long time without drinking, and don't do it by myself, I smoke like a chimney (unless with my parents, because they don't seem to know, but then I could be so wrong).

I don't need to give a good excuse, I'll use heroin if I want to. I'm fully aware of its addictive properties, and the harm that comes from a combination of heroins actual issues and the dumb-ass "War on Drugs" thing that has made it full of incredible amounts of crap.

Not a paradox at all. The world is crap because of power/money grabbers, drugs just make the life that they dictate livable, and/or provides different experiences that you don't have to leave the house for. :p
