What do you think of the money the Yankees have put up in the pasta days? What do you think of the criticism they have faced? The bottom line is that the NY Yankees make money every season. If they want to spend the money, and they can do it, why do you care? They invest in their product. People are saying "with the state of the economy and our country at the current time we should be aware of that." HEY!!!! We're smart people here. We don't need a baseball team to give us an econ lesson. Money doesn't always equal championships. Check their year end earnings and you can see they know a little about what they are doing.

Yeah, the Phillies are great. Lets see...two championships in 125+ years, most losses ever in all of MLB, the team Toronto made history on by walking them off in game 6 of the 1993 world series...their list of accomplishments (or rather, failures) goes on

OK, now to the OP:
I really don't mind that the Yankees outspend everybody else. They have the revenue to do so. What does bug me is when teams take funds from the revenue-sharing system, and don't invest it in player salaries (or player development). *coughPittsburghcough*
I don't think that there are any MLB teams that *didn't* turn a profit, though.
Of course, as a Cleveland fan, I've long accepted the fact that we're the AAAA farm club for the large market players. We develop talent, and when they grow up they move on. Life goes on. You just have to run your ballclub a bit differently.

The Yankees will always make money because they're the MFY's. Losing isn't killing their profits, just their pride and dignity. Once they buy enough of the league they'll tack on another WSC and all will be well in their cold little hearts.

There's a good number of players one can throw out on the other side of the ball, too... But yes, Sheets would definitely be a big pickup. One wonders how much it would take to lure him to the Bronx, given the other contracts the Yankees have filled...

Look, if you want to talk about a bad team, you can't say anything without talkin' 'bout the Cubs, okay? :)
And with the way they played Boston in the ALDS, they had no chance of winning. They were leaving men on base like it was going out of style.

Hey no team in Philly has won anything besides a Lacrosse title and Minor League Hockey title in about 20 some years.
After all the years of the eagles sucking and choking in the playoffs, and the sixers just plain sucking, and the flyers choking, and the phillies sucking for about 8 years straight....I am allowed to personally soil myself over this.

Well i'm just glad the phillies fans didnt go burning down players houses for choking in the WS(1993).
But yes the cubs do deserve it more I agree.

Other teams have found a way to win without having huge payrolls. The Yankees did far better when they worked on guys from their system. Their recent success has been with farm guys. Money is a great thing, but it doesn't win championships. Plenty of teams have spent money and come up wanting.
My question was more to the point of the economy and baseball. As for the comment from someone else about all baseball teams turning a profit is wrong. Is scolding a team because they invest in their product just stupid? Business is business and everyone has the right to run theirs the way they see fit. I just think it makes people sound stupid to feign like they care so much about what happens to the people. It's like their statement is "the Yankees are what's wrong with America."

I've gotta disagree with you there. These numbers are from 2007 (I can't find any 2008 data), but the owners aren't losing any money.
*LINK* (http://www.forbes.com/2008/04/16/baseball-team-values-biz-sports-baseball08-cx_mo_kb_0416baseballintro.html)
Five years ago, 16 teams lost money. In 2007 only three teams--Blue Jays ($1.8 million), Red Sox ($19.1 million), Yankees ($47.3 million)--posted an operating loss. But even those losses are misleading. For the owners of the Yankees and Red Sox, the huge dividends they get from their unconsolidated cable networks more than make up for the teams' losses. Meanwhile Rogers Communications, which owns the Blue Jays, their stadium and the cable channel that televises its games, derives huge benefits from owning the Blue Jays not reflected on its team's P&L statement.
I basically agree with the rest of what you have to say, though. The Yankees, BoSox, and California Angels of Los Anaheim have to revenues to pay higher salaries, and enough of an affluent fan base to charge higher prices. It's their business; they can run it however they want.

A couple of seasons ago I would have spit in your direction for the Giants love. Now I love more of their pitchers than my own (I can also name more of their pitchers than my own).
I'm a fourth-generation Cub fan; however, even I know that paying close attention to anything they do before the All-Star break is a waste of time.
My mom's a Cubs fan, and I've become an even bigger fan after Billy Beane decided to ruin my baseball team and then pour some lye in the gaping wound. It was a rough baseball childhood, with my mom a Cubs fan and my dad a Red Sox fan. It taught me many valuable lessons about defeat and shame. :p

Tim Lincecum is a god.
News from the Hot Stove (ESPN) is that the Angels are willing to one-up the (g)Nats 8 year, $160 mil. offer for Texeira. Which likely would have him earning, annually, somewhere in the CC Sabathia/Johan Santana range. I'm sure we're going to be hearing from the president of the Nationals about how unfair a big signing like that is if it happens, considering the economy. :P
I want to see how the Mets are going to fare with two closers, and if their pitching coach will be able to get K-Rod to his old self (he wasn't even good last year) and Putz back from his sorry 2008 season. Also, how they're going to slot into the closer/setup roles.
Finally, I'm interested in which team is going to be able to pick up Willy Taveras. Somehow, the Rockies found it in them to let an NL steals leader (or at least, a major contender) from last year go, and I'm sure there are at least a few teams itching to get a pair of young wheels.

I used to be mainly an A's fan, the Giants were a distant second favorite team for me. But then I heard that the A's were moving to Fremont. So I am holding a grudge over the betrayal and rooting against them unless/until they abandon such treacherous ideas. I've been to too many A's games to count, but only one Giants game.

I've always liked the Cubs. Maybe because, growing up a fan of Cal Football, I love underdogs, the teams that can't seem to get a break. Being a diehard fan of a team that loses quite often taught me how to deal with disappointment, and that the bitter taste of defeat was no reason to cry. Victory is a reason to cry. I don't cry when my teams lose. I will cry if Cal goes to the Rose Bowl, though. But back to baseball. Poor Cubs, I'd really like them to go to the world series soon. It's been so long, and it would make a lot of people really happy. I would be quite jovial myself.

Texeira signs a 8-yr, $180 million deal with the Yankees (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3790141)
All things considered, they're spending $60 million on three players alone next year. And they'll still find a way to lose.
