I think most, if not all, shaving rituals come from a desire to appear younger. A 25 year old with a beard will usually appear 2 or 3 years older than one who is clean shaven.

I personally hate shaving, but have no desire for a beard...I think I look best with about two days worth of stubble along with my standard goatee.

I can confidently say you should never shave your chest. I did once on a dare and ended up keeping it going for over a year because it itches so damn much when it grows back in

I shave my face whenever I take a shower, part of my 'ritual'. I keep a soul patch and a mustache because they look good on me and eliminate the rest of the crud. I can't grow a full beard, just never worked.

It's been fashionable from time to time since at least the rule of Augustus, so that would mean it's been popular for intermittent periods over the past two thousand years, if not earlier.

Depends on the place and the culture. Where there is a record of helmets being widely worn by soldiers, generally hair is much shorter and facial hair is reduced considerably. Short hair has been used constantly for mostly practical reasons, but since aristocrats didn't need to wear helmets that over-heated, they would grow it out longer. This eventually resulted in traditions of permitting the upper class to grow their hair out longer if they weren't expected to actually risk their lives. On the other hand, the Huns used to apply hot sears to males' faces to primitively sear the hair follicles from allowing a beard to grow out.

Any cultural tradition dealing with hair generally springs out of practical habits dealing with hair.

I only shave once or twice a week since I always end up bleeding all over the place and with skin that is sore for a day or two. I wish I could just forget about it and grow a beard, but I don't have the genes for it. It just isn't thick enough.

I don't touch any hair not growing on my head. But that's because I have no reason to, as nobody ever sees me naked. Maybe I'd feel different about it if that wasn't the case.

With the Romans I believe. Long unkempt hair and scraggly beards were signs of barbarianism and of the uncivilised.

I have relatively short hair because my hair doesn't do anything - doesn't turn into an afro, doesn't go curly, doesn't go straight and long - just sits there, like a mushroom on my head... waiting.

I shave because I'm two tone even though I have blonde hair

(inspired by the female shaving thread)

When did it become fashionable and the norm to have short hair and no facial hair?

The oldest recorded case of men's shaving being the standard practice in the West was ancient Egypt.

Why did these two things come about?

They did it to reduce body odor. Then it became a symbolic resurrection ritual and a mark of civilization.

The fashionability of the length of one's hair has shifted over the centuries. Sometimes on its own, as hair has been kept gradually shorter from the sixties to now. Sometimes as a direct political statement such as when the Hippy movement made long hair fashionable in the 60's in the first place, or when the Roundheads following Cromwell shaved their heads to contrast themselves with their long-haired royalist enemies. This even happened in China when the Manchu conquered and imposed the hairstyle of a shaved brow and a long braided ponytail.

Hell, some guys shave their arms and legs now!

People in our society are becoming more and more pampered and less and less mature. Once upon a time it was understood that women were attracted to smooth pretty boys when they were very young and become attracted to coarser, hairier, "manlier" guys as they grow up. If men and women don't grow up, they don't want to look like, or pursue, guys who look grown up.

The same as women shaving their pubic hair. Some people find it attractive. I find it creepy as hell. My wife should not look like my 3-year old daughter.

What is this hatred against hair on men?
Well, the length of ones hair indicates how acculturated one is. I used to have long hair and a beard, not because I wanted to look like a Biker (which I did) or like Jesus Christ in Catholic iconography (which I also did) but because shaving everyday was a pain in the ass and so was maintaining a short hairstyle. With long hair I just put in in a ponytail and I was done. But it was my disdain for social convention that let me walk about in public and ignore strangers comments that I looked "scary" or just general "look at the hair on that one."

Of course, they made those comments because they recognized my hair as a mark of disdain for social convention. And Jesus Christ and Bikers disdained social convention too. So there may be something too it.

Yes, but just asking Women what they're attracted to in a man is pointless. Most of them don't know. Ask them what fragrance turns them on and they'll pick whatever cologne is marketed in magazines the most. Almost none of them will tell you essence of licorice, and only slightly more will tell you CK1.

Plenty of women are surprised to learn that body hair is a turn on when that's what they get after hoping for a guy who looks like an underwear model.

What usually catches a woman's attention is a day or two of growth. It shows attentiveness to one's appearance which shows he can be attentive in general (or specifically to her) but that he has enough manliness to be exciting.

When I hit puberty and the first wiry black hairs started sprouting on my otherwise ivory back I took tweezers to it. If it happened a little at a time I'd have left it alone, but it was all at once, one giant hair all alone on smooth skin.

Now, in my 30's, I can still reach any spot on my back. I consider it a form of yoga.

$11 for 4 blades. 4 blades, 14 days of shaving (sometimes more than once a day) = 56 days, about 2 months of fresh shaves.

An average of about $5 for a packet of 10 disposable razors. 10 days of fresh shaves (unless you like cuts and knicks). You can stretch it if you don't shave every day. Assuming you shave every day you need to spend $15 a month give or take $2 on disposable razors; and disposing of them can be a problem, they sit in landfills forever because nothing on them is recyclable.

Disposables: $15 for a month of shaving every day plus disposing of 30 razors a month.

Expensive Razor: $5.50 for a month of shaving every day and only needed to dispose of 2 or 3 blades a month.

I likes my expensive razor. It shaves better, saves me money, and pollutes less :)

I formally and ritually send my razor into exile every September 1st and have done so for more years than I care to remember. Midwest winters are cold and the beard helps keep frostbite from the arctic-like winds away. The September start date originally came about while I was working in the grain industry. Harvest always began in September and 18 hour days didn`t allow time for shaving. Yeah, it itched like hell for a couple of weeks and I looked like I had the mange for the first month but when the first day of 30 degree temps hit, I was ready for them.
As for the coments about a 25 year old looking 2-3 years younger without a beard. I`m nearly 40 and look more my age WITH a beard. I`m not greying in my hair yet (beard is another story) and have got a bit of a baby-face, so clean shaven I look about 5-10 years younger than I am.
The razor is released from exile usually by mid-March yearly.

I like to keep a couple days growth on my face, mainly to demonstrate that I could have a beard if I wanted one.
I also shave my pubes once every month or two. If I don't keep my pubic hair under control, it reaches the point where English explorers could get lost in there.
The rest of my body I just let get hairy as fuck. It is mainly my chest/stomach/legs/forearms that get in on the action. Fortunately, I have been spared the dreaded bumfluff, and only a sparse amount of back hair has taken root.

Bruising afterwards? Maybe if you, you know, hit her afterwards...

I've never had that problem, is what I'm saying.

I can't say why shaving is en vogue now (to the extent that it is, anyway), but I also can't say that I mind it. I've read about the 80s, the growth of the gay male aesthetic, and Calvin Klein, etc. Maybe that has something to do with it, maybe not. Either way, shaved just looks better, in my opinion. On me, anyway. I can pull off scruff, but beards are a no-no. I look like every nihilist you've ever seen in a movie when I grow a beard, or like I should be plotting a revolution somewhere. It ain't pretty. So I shave.

As for body shaving...well, I do that too. Basically, I shave everything from the cheekbones down. I'm not terribly hairy to begin with. I've got about three chest hairs worth mentioning, and absolutely no back hair (thankfully). Still, not a fan of body hair, so it's all gotta go. I tried it once years ago, for giggles, and it stuck. And I've never gotten anything but positive reactions from females, so I'm not likely to stop the shaving anytime soon. At this point, I'm so used to it that if I go a week or so without shaving, I'll look down and think, "That's not my fucking leg!"

It should come as no surprise that I prefer girls who shave, too, then. Preferring shaved pubes has nothing to do with maturity or lack thereof, it just looks amazing, and...well, put it this way: cats are the only ones that should be coughing up hairballs after a nice licking. :p

Apparently I have more to say about shaving than I thought.

You haven't had any complaints? I honestly can't imagine having sex with a male who was hairless from the cheekbones down. It's just not manly. Men - in my opinion - are supposed to be hairy. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of full-on back hair, but being entirely shaved/waxed is just not masculine.

Maybe I've just been lucky with the girls I've been with? They seem to like it, at least--especially in the pubic region. It makes oral better on both sides, in my experience. But to be honest, I didn't start it with the intention of enhancing anything (though it does wonders for muscle definition--assuming there is muscle there, anyway), I just happened to like it, and it's what's normal for me now. I've definitely never had anyone tell me I don't look masculine, since I have pretty masculine features, face and physique-wise. Maybe I should start wearing make-up and fingernail polish, see how far I can take this? Make Judith Butler proud, and all.

Men are supposed to be hairy, though? That seems a bit strong. Kind of like saying women are meant to be hairless. Human grooming habits in general are a bit unnatural to begin with, up to and including shaving, so it's mostly a cultural matter. Our culture goes both ways where men's body hair is concerned, so either aesthetic is equally viable, I think. And I can always grow it out if it becomes a problem. Plus, anyone who would cast me aside over body hair is not someone I'd want to be with anyway. Maybe, subconsciously, I've been shaving all along just as a sort of litmus test.

But I doubt it.

(inspired by the female shaving thread)
When did it become fashionable and the norm to have short hair and no facial hair?
Why did these two things come about?

Classical-era Greece. They started plucking their beards as soon as they had some white hair in it, so not to be branded as "old man". Kalos kai agathos, etc. Same with the Romans, after Graecia capta ferum victorem cepit. Beard till it's black, no beard when it's grey or white.

Hell, some guys shave their arms and legs now!

Meh. Unless you're an olympic swimmer.

What is this hatred against hair on men?
note: this is coming from a long haired and bearded fellow
Yay beard! Me too: beard, most of the time. I shave my moustaches, though - I don't look very good with them.

I have a very powerful cigarette lighter, nose hair is no concern of mine. In fact, eyebrow hair is being kept down nicely

Eh... I prefer shaved men & women simply because I don't want to be fondling/touching/groping/licking/insertotherverb something resembling Chewbacca or my bathroom floor mat.

Normal body hair... arms, legs, little bit on the chest, happy trail, clean cut facial hair is all good; just not one for the mountain man (or guido) variety. I don't ever want to be in the position to seriously say "Aw damn... I have another chest hair stuck in my throat."

Why does long hair= libido poison?Presumably because it's a turnoff.

I agree for... down yonder. My chest is clear though - not through any great choice of my own I must admit, but I've blonde hair so chest hair just looks weird on blondes anyway.

There was a piece in 'The Sun' this morning in response to Prince Harry grwing a beard.

The spokes woman for the pro side said that woman are biolgicaly programed to fancey men with facial hair, as it show's their maturity, whilst those men without stuble are viewed as boys not yet ready.

I didn't read the other sides argument, so men with beards = men, and those without = boys!

Yep I can readily agree with this.

The number of bearded women in freak shows across the world suggest that growing a beard isn't exclusively a man's thing.

HAHAHA! It's a sad time in every man's life when he considers buying a gadget to remove nasal hair. And it comes to every man. 0_0

Why don't you just trim instead?

Shaved pubes looks awful on men.
Shaving means I get 6 to 8 weeks before my lower afro is back in bloom; trimming would probably mean taking a pair of scissors to my genitals once every couple weeks. I'm not that brave, to be quite honest.

But you do have to wonder what biological purpose it serves - now if women found it devilishly attractive I could understand it, sadly they don't.

Well, who knows? Try braiding it or tying small pendants or charms to it. Shit, if those with nose studs and barbells are getting laid, nose-hair tie-offs can't be far off.

I agree that hairless would make oral better. Picking pubes from your teeth is just nasty. Although I think a trim can suffice.

But to be honest, I didn't start it with the intention of enhancing anything (though it does wonders for muscle definition--assuming there is muscle there, anyway), I just happened to like it, and it's what's normal for me now.

Fair enough.

I don't know what you - or your member - looks like, so I can't really comment on that.

I have, however, been with a typical footy-playing body-building blonde who I'm pretty sure had shaved legs and chest. Even though he's very typically masculine looking, the lack of hair was a bit... metro for my taste?

Men are supposed to be hairy, though? That seems a bit strong. Kind of like saying women are meant to be hairless. Human grooming habits in general are a bit unnatural to begin with, up to and including shaving, so it's mostly a cultural matter.

Yeah, you're right. I guess it's like the 'women are "supposed" to be pale' notion in some cultures. For example, naturally Japanese women and men have the same skin colour, but some girls spend their lives avoiding the sun and using bleaching creams.

The way that someone presents themselves physically is a reflection of themselves. Someone who has tattoos and long hair is presumably a very different person to someone with a solarium tan and a shaved chest. While I doubt someone would judge you (or anyone) based on their pubic hair, I guess it's normal for people to judge based on overall presentation.
