I can't really comment on the Elvis/Chuck deal. I wasn't around then, but I do have tunes from both.

What makes me rock? Lots and lots of stuff. Europe is playing right now, but I might have to skip past it to some Exodus. I'm not really in the mood for stuff like the Beach Boys or the Aquabats today.

You cant narrow it down to just one band that "started" metal.

Sabbath, Rush, Cream, Blue Oyster Cult, various punk acts, and even classical music (Metallica for example was really into Wagner) all had a hand in it.

Metal was mostly a fusion of hard rock and blues. Sabbath was that heavy, blusie influence. To call them or any other band of that era, specifically a metal band would be a mistake. They are certainly important to the genre and helped with its creation but they don't quite fit the mold of what metal is. Kind of like Elvis and rock

On one hand, yes, obviously. But on the other, I think the point sort of stands.

You're influenced by so much around you, so many disparate elements of so much diverse music (and non-musical influences; it's no coincidence, for example, that techno emerged in industrial Detroit) that pinning down a single 'originator' for a musical genre seems in some way pointless to me.

Many singers are hard to pin down, as genres change and evolve over time. Elvis was considered a rock musician in his day, however he was more gospel than anything else, for if he had his way he would have done mainly gospel and worship music from what I've been told. He is very well respected by modern country fans as well. Mr. Presley was one of the founding fathers of rock, no denying it, for he brought it out into mainstream, but he is also the progenitor of modern country music, as well as a great southern gospel singer. I could go into others, but since Elvis was the one mentioned, I decided to discuss him.

another big debate is the "beatles / Rolling Stones, who is better?" debate.
Beatles hands down. If for nothing else, at least the Beatles knew when to call it quits and not ruin a good thing. The Stones still haven't learned that lesson.

Hell the first big Stones hit was a Lennon/McCartney song.

The Beatles - Johnny B. Goode (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=6TAlVQgtkuM&feature=related)

John Lennon & Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=45V1Q_C2Wpc&feature=related)

The Beatles "Roll Over Beethoven" (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=45V1Q_C2Wpc&feature=related)

Also, if you are figuring that those who influence are more important than those they influence, then we need to track down the first musician.

I enjoy Pink Floyd (hell year), OLD Metallica (Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and Justice for All), Queen, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin (greatest. band. ever.), and a few others I can't remember right now. The classics. From a time when music was actually good and not cheap and mass produced like some radio-active lead-filled teddy bear from China.

Many bands make me rock. But the first song that came up when I shuffled my mp3 player just now was...Sehnsucht by Einsturzende Neubauten...Wait that's not rock. Let's try again....Ghost on the Highway by The Gun Club. Okay we'll go with that. The Gun Club makes me rock :D

Heheh this line of rhetoric always makes me giggle. I'm getting on in years now, and yes I still enjoy the classics and the music of my youth, but there is some really, really good modern music around.

Music is an every evolving thing, and to remain in the past(musicaly) just makes no sense to me.

Right now I'm listening to 'Singing Burgers with Attitude' by Ultimate Army of Prawns. Rap metal song about a bunch of burgers angry about vegetarians hating on them. Includes the immortal line 'do you have beef with us, cos we've got beef with ourselves'. Yeh...is there anywhere I can buy a normal music taste?:p
