What is the best title for the leader of a casual group
I lead an open group intended to discuss issues, and sometimes do community service. Just a general catch-all activism group to share information. I am looking for the best title (other than just Organizer) for the leaders that indicates a bit more leadership than just organizing but less than say "President" or "Chairman".
I put in a poll some titles I thought of, but feel free to recommend any.
I am leaning toward Moderator as that indicates keeping the open conversation on track, and keeping the agenda but not "leading" everyone.

My advice would be that instead of trying to come up with a title that doesn't sound like a big deal, you should use a title so completely over the top that no one could possibly take it seriously. Like Dread Lord or Grand Chief Inquisitor.

Why do I always imagine a prostitute calling her pimp Big Daddy whenever I read or hear big daddy?
Personally I'd go with Headmaster....giggity.

If it were a gaming group I would lol.
What is funny is how over the top Freemasonic and other such society titles are but their supposed to be serious.

Co-ordinator sounds nice if you're involved in planning meetings. 'Team leader' might sound nice to your fellow groupmembers, seeing as it emphasizes your relationship to the team itself.

You could consider "Christ". In the days of Jesus it was a common honorific, in these days it will get attention.
Otherwise I quite like guide and advisor.
If you want to give it a sf ring, try "Hindmost".

It depends on the composition and purpose of the group. Sometimes "spokesperson" is appropriate or it could be "delegate" if the group has nominated that person to be their representative.

I think President/Chairperson is a good title. It doesn't matter that it makes you sound more important than you really are, that is the point, especially if you are planning on putting this on a resume.

You can't go wrong with a fantasy motif. I suggest either Grand Wizard or Grand Dragon.
I also suggest wandering around loudly declaring, "Hello everyone, did you know that I, [name here], am a GRAND DRAGON! Yes, it is true. I, [name here], am a GRAND DRAGON!"

A community association that I work with from time to time has a nice, albeit unusual, way of handling this. Whenever they're organising an activity or initiative they designate one person as PTB (Person To Blame, occasionally extended to PTBITGW (Person To Blame If Things Go Wrong) in the minutes).

I think "Grand Wizard" will work well, and the negative connotations are nil!
How about just "Chief" or "Skipper"
It isn't over the top obnoxiously egotistical so, it might actually be respectable. Yet, it has a humerous element to it, which could be good to maintain the equal, yet respective relationship with your subordinates.
If however, you are after something over the top obnoxiously egotistical, you can't go past "The honorable Most grand, glorious supreme all-powerful sex-loaded overlord of [your group]"

Coordinator, cause it has that "arranging things" feel and I think you'd probably be doing that.

Simply, no title at all. In a casual group, authority is automatically recognised by everyone to someone, if the need for authority arises.

It doesn't matter what you call yourself as long as you reap the benefits and the perks. Just like myself being a high member of club committee I just got two free tickets to a sporting event.
lananara and the h.u.b. use "low person" (= hindmost = coordinatior) pretty generally for all elected officials. but then we don't believe in "leadership" as such, (other then as "exampleship") but rather coordinatorship, other then in brief and limited contexts of emergency (which are considered almost invariably examples of why we don't believe in "leadership" when they come into existence!)
for a "casual" organization or group, "most ad hoc ad hocness", as in "anyone can form a committi"
or the big hoc. captain, somewhat bizaar and ironically seemed to work for the peace loving indiginous miwok, maidu, and other penutian speakers of native california, who'se village and triblet organization was of a largely, save with the exception of emergencies, mostly casual nature.
basically, when enough people decided they wanted to get something done, the went to whoever they felt best knew how to do that particular thing or kind of thing, and asked, begged, pleaded, cajoled that person into 'leading' them, in THAT PARTICULAR activity, and then, only for the duration of engauging in it.
i'm not authority on the last, but that's what i've heard most often from those i'm most convinced know what the're talking about. primarily such elders as i've occasionally come in contact with. (along with a bit of suplimental material recorded by certain anthropologists during the final years of the dominance among them of their own languages and ways of life, a little over a hundred years ago)
