Oh yay, more terrorist attacks, just what we're after.

A car bomb devastated a busy street in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar today, killing at least 17 people and injuring dozens more.

Violence is spiraling in Pakistan's northwest just as the country faces rising tensions with India over the deadly suicide attacks in Mumbai, raising concern for the nuclear-armed country's stability.

The blast tore through a street near Peshawar's famed Storytellers Bazaar early on Friday evening, wrecking several shops and setting a string of vehicles on fire.

Television footage showed survivors frantically carrying bloodied victims from the scene as fire crews sought to douse the flames.

Police official Shah Nawaz said at least 17 people were killed and 47 more were injured.

Pakistani forces have stepped up operations against the strongholds of Taliban and al-Qa'ida militants blamed for attacks in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Militants have responded with a campaign of gun and bomb attacks.

The region is also bedeviled by sectarian tensions between Sunni and Shia Muslims. Today's blast was close to Shia mosque, though it was unclear if it was the target.

Clearly we need to invade Pakistan.

Terrorism is a disease, and in order to cure a disease, you sometimes have to destroy the patient's nation's armed forces and overthrow their government and occupy their nation in the name of freedom. Just like with Iraq!*

It seems that the northwest area of Pakistan is becoming ever more lawless with the taleban and afiiliated groups sheltering from NATO across the Afghan border, NATO bombing the taleban et al and the Pakistani army caught up in the middle of this cross border chaos, with the militants attacking Pakistan's citys in retalliation for the Pakistani army's operations there would appear to be a spiral of increasing violence. There is IIRC a large amount of economic aid (and F16 fighters) tied into Pakistan's co-operation with NATO in Afghanistan making the situation hard to defuse.
