OJ sentence to 15 years.

Ex-US football star OJ Simpson has been jailed for 15 years for the kidnap and armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas hotel.

Describing Simpson, 61, as arrogant and ignorant, District Judge Jackie Glass said the evidence was overwhelming.

Simpson made an emotional appeal prior to sentencing at the Las Vegas court, saying he was "sorry" and "confused".

His accomplice, Clarence Stewart, was also sentenced to 15 years. Both men were convicted in October.

They were found guilty on 12 charges relating to the robbery and holding of the memorabilia dealers at Las Vegas' Palace Station hotel in September 2007.

In 1995, Simpson was acquitted of murdering his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman in what was dubbed "the trial of the century".

Simpson was later found liable for the deaths in a civil case and ordered to pay $33.5m (£19m) to Mr Goldman's family.

Emotional plea

The two defendants seized the memorabilia dealers in an attempt to reclaim items linked to the former National Football League star's sporting career, which Simpson claimed still belonged to him.

OJ SIMPSON SENTENCED
Conspiracy to commit a crime
Conspiracy to kidnap
Two counts of first degree kidnapping
Burglary in possession of a deadly weapon
Two counts of armed robbery
Two counts of assault with a deadly weapon

Profile: OJ Simpson

Before sentencing, Judge Glass said "the potential for harm to occur" in the room where the robbery took place was "tremendous".

"You went to the room, you took guns... you used force, you took property... and in this state that amounts to robbery with a deadly weapon," said the judge.

Wearing a dark blue jail uniform, Simpson earlier pleaded for leniency from the judge with a trembling voice and tears in his eyes.

"I didn't mean to hurt anybody and I didn't mean to steal from anybody," said the former Buffalo Bills player.

"I did not know that I was doing anything illegal... I thought that I was confronting friends and retrieving my property. So I am sorry. I am sorry for all of it."

But the judge rejected the apology, saying his actions amounted to "much more than stupidity".

Judge Glass also denied defence motions for bail pending appeal, saying both defendants posed a risk of fleeing.

Why can't someone just shoot his sorry ass by now? I'm tired of hearing about him anyway. He's more famous now than he was when playing football.

I really wish I knew where my "OJ in the slammer" POG slammer got to. That'd probably be worth money by now...

He did learn.

Now he gets free room and meals, an excercise program and a stay on paying off the $33 mil owed to the Goldman's.

It's a free room and meals. Meals you have to share with other dangerous criminals(generally). And a room you're locked into. In a building that's explicitly designed to prevent you leaving without permission. Full of guards who are trained to prevent you from leaving, and authorised to use deadly force to do so, if needs be.

Fuck, I got to go get my ass arrested, sounds like the life.

He was never going to pay that off anyway. He was living good prior to the arrest with his connections - prison's not going to be an improvement.

Was he "living good'? no job, reputation down in the sewers, and a huge multi-milliion dollar settlement that he has to pay. Last I heard, all his business contacts pulled out and wouldn't have anything to do with him (after the first trial.)

In 15 years since the original trial, he hadn't paid any of the damages awarded to the Goldmans. A small sum was seized, as I recall, but he hadn't made any payments and wasn't ever going to. Intangibles like reputation notwithstanding, he was living just fine on money he had hidden away, even if the work dried up.

The one thing that always interested me about OJ was that the public really had no idea how much of an asshole he really was. The people who knew him best knew he was an asshole, but the public never really saw that in him. Then after that whole trial and civil suit, we really got a good look at him and saw just what a complete self-absorbed arrogant asshole he really was and always had been.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

the reason he tried "self help" to get his memorabilia back was because if he reported it to the police they would have been seized to pay the goldmans.

I was just wondering where the hell the 15 year figure came from. You are correct that he received a maximum of 33 years and a minimum of 9 years.

1) Orenthal escapes justice for killing Nicole and Ron.
2) Orenthal found civilly liable for wrongful death.
3) Fred Goldman keeps up the pressure for 14 years.
4) Orenthal attempts to seize property by violence in order to prevent the Goldmans from obtaining the proceeds from their sale.
5) Orenthal goes to jail for at least 9 years (probably a lot more) for trying to keep the Goldmans from getting the money due them in satisfaction of his liability for the wrongful death of Ron.

What goes around, comes around.

And btw: Orenthal's teary apology to the judge this morning reminded me of nothing so much as the "I'm sorry" uttered by Private Gardner at the beginning of The Dirty Dozen.

I believe it's the reason why he didn't just go to authorities about the stolen memorabilia, because if he did, then any proceeds from their sale would go to the Goldmans.

Can you imagine what his life will be like in prison? There are going to be a lot of really nasty people there who would just love to make his life miserable. He's too old and ugly to be someone's "bitch," but I suspect he'll get no respect - and in prison respect is everything.
