Since you didn't specify which country you're based in (though I suspect North America from the use of 'college'), this particular PhD-holder in archaeology, and board member of the Society for Historical Archaeology, suggests going to the SHA's 2008-2009 Guide to Graduate Programs in Historical and Underwater Archaeology, which you may find here:

http://www.sha.org/students_jobs/higher/default.htm (http://www.sha.org/students_jobs/higher/default.htm)

While a guide to graduate programs, it's also a fairly good guide to undergraduate programs.

Unfortunately, the link provided doesn't help distinguish between which programs are historical archaeology and which are maritime. For speed of search, try going here:

http://www.sha.org/students_jobs/higher/highered_institutions.htm

and then searching for 'marine' and/or 'maritime'.

Hope that helps!

TG me if you need more personal details. I know many maritime archaeologists in the UK, USA, and Australia, so may be able to point you in a more specific direction.

Southampton's supposed to be very good for that sort of thing.

Too good for me, though :p

Southampton is indeed an excellent programme which I'd highly recommend - though again, I suspect the OP may be North America-based.

Which shouldn't stop him/her from looking at Southampton, mind. A colleague of mine in Perth, Western Australia went all the way to Southampton to do her MA.

Have you heard of N.U.M.A.? It's the national underwater and marine association. Yes North America haha. But N.U.M.A. is lead by the author Clive Cussler (Excellent author) and it's really a great place i want to work with, they have lot's of success with plenty of sunken ships such as a Confederate Submarine the Hunley, the Bonhomme Richard and many others.

My uncle went to Plymouth uni to do that, or something like it. Ended up working for an oil sheikh making $400,000 a year for running his private aquarium. Happy days.

If it was Plymouth it was probably marine biology especially if he is lucky enough to earn 400,000 for running an aquarium, I had a friend go and do that degree there apparently there really good for it

I say go for it.

I'm all for the pursuit of out-of-the-way degrees, especially ones like this that guide you into a cool career.

Goddamnit.

Sod that. Pith helmets are the way forward.

Who needs a whip when you can bring a mattock down on their head?

I can't believe that I know this, but if you're in the U.S., you'll want a decent undergrad Anthropology program with a grad program, or at least good connections.

For that, do as my buddy did. University of Miami, in Coral Gables, Florida. The place is right on the water, and the faculty includes a couple of marine archaeologist specialists. I'm not sure of the exact number, but I could get in contact with my buddy. That is, if I can find his number...
