Ah the Gulf of Oman.

There's yer story, in English it basically says "Pirates in 2 speedboats try to attack a cruise liner carrying 600-odd people, the German frigate Mecklenburg-Vorpommern stops this".

Thoughts?

Okay, how many cruise ships are in that area?

Because so far, I've heard claims from the French, American and now German navy that they saved a cruise liner with 600 odd people onboard.

That either means that three navies are bullshitting us trying to say "Hey, look how awesome we are"

or it means that that cruise liner is doing a terrible terrible job at staying away from pirates.

Or there really are three cruise liners.

At this point, I am confused.

At this point, I am confused. The Pirates have vastly expanded their area of operations by using motherships. You remember the Sirius Star, the super tanker? That got nabbed near Madagascar.

wouldn't it be a bit hard to hijack a ship full of 600 people?

Not if you're black and armed enough to terrify rich German tourists.

It seems that to me that these cruise liners, despite being luxurious, are sailing through areas that are known to be dangerous with little protection.

My mind is still confused as to how people could possibly want to do something like that, while relying on naval ships that are themselves stating they are having a hard time getting around in time.

Insurance scam

That would explain it, strangely enough.

I think that to stop these attacks, the worlds navys are going to have to take the action to the source. By that I mean they have to attack them on shore and destroy them. If this doesn't happen, they will be come more of a problem. For ref see the war on Tripoli.

I suspect they're more interesting in stealing the passengers' cash and other valuables than hijacking such a large vessel.

Go pirates! You crazy bastards.

Honestly though, it's about time someone puts the world's navies to the test. They've been lacking in the naval warfare department for some time now.

Their MO seems to be about ransom at the moment, not petty theft.
