I'm planning my first vacation in years, and was wondering if anyone has any particularly interesting places to go (I mean ones I won't find in the local bookshop)?

We're thinking about Maui and Kauaʻi, but could in theory take a day or two if something else really caught our attention... thoughts?

For that matter, here's a poll: which islands would YOU want to go to?

i can only speak to stuff on oahu, and not so much the vacationy end of things. but i know where the cheap food is, and that the north shore beaches are fucking awesome. and if you fail in an attempt to find a place to live there, it screws you up for years to come when you are forced back to the midwest.

It depends on your time table. If you're only spending a week or two only, check out one maybe two of them. I take it slow when traveling however. I like to get out and explore. I spent 3 days on Inishmore off the coast of Ireland this summer and that wasn't enough time. Same deal with Corsica, except that was a two and half week trip and I still didn't see everything I wanted to see.

Understandable down there, I don't miss Virginia for that reason.

Living in Connecticut... we'd rather a warm vacation before the onset of winter. And it's in the US, so prices are stable. (Though the Euro and other European currencies have fallen nicely against the dollar of late.)

I've also see quite a bit of Europe already, need to branch out west more.
Oh, and it's her idea too. ;)

I hear Hawaii has excellent mud.

It's the volcanic activity. Keeps the soil, and thus the mud, very high in minerals and such.

Maui - Haleakala (sunrise and bikeing) Lahaina and Kehei are the touristy areas.

Iao valley is a beautiful place to hike.

From Maui, you can Ferry over to Oahu and experience Waikiki and other areas like the North shore (but in september, you'll miss the really BIG waves) Sea Life park and our Polynesian Cultural Center.

I hear Hawaii has excellent mud. you should come over and test it out for yourself. *nod*
