Ex-Soviet Countries have to wait-o to join NATO.

Yes, it's a new Yootopia's Rhyming News Topic!

The conflict between Georgia and Russia in August and the internal debate in Ukraine mean that Nato is in no hurry to see either Ukraine or Georgia join the alliance.

Nato foreign ministers meeting in Brussels this week will restate the principle that they can become members, but in practice they will take few steps to make this happen anytime soon.

Also pretty much linked -

Nato has agreed to a "conditional and graduated re-engagement" with Russia, the alliance's secretary general says.

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said talks with Moscow, which were frozen over its war with Georgia in August, would resume.

i don't think it has to do with them being ex soviet countries as their situations.
Georgia has Russian troops on their soil and needs to resolve that before joining either by convincing Russia to leave or just recognizing those regions independence.

The Ukraine has a sizable Russian minority that may react violently to joining Nato which could draw Russia into a conflict. the Ukraine needs to have the support of this minority before an application to Nato should be considered.

I think that the instability of those two countries also needs to be taken care of, and Saakashvilli needs to stay way the hell away from Georgian politics if they're going to have any chance of joining. Attacking Russian peacekeepers and getting counterattacked by Russia would be much less "something to chat about idly on the internet" and more "AIEE NUCLEAR WAR HURTS :(" were Georgia to become a member.

But if they do join NATO, they get to keep their soverignty when 2017 rolls around and the Russia black sea fleet gets kicked out of the Ukraine, Russia will think twice maybe even three times about invading them.

Probably the right thing to do right now. Even though such an act wouldn't be targeted at Russia by the established NATO members, the leadership of Ukraine and Georgia would try to treat it as a stick with which to poke Russia. It's best not to give Pooty-poot this sort of domestic propaganda tool, as we've already given him the MCD interceptors as a way to make a paranoid population rally around an external bogeyman.

Further, with current economic conditions and the attendant level of international disorganization, now is just the wrong time to do this.

I have been warning him about his titles for years now. The boy just doesn't learn. Where did we go wrong with him?!?!

Also, yay that those two nations are not in NATO. It really bugs me to have alliance with people who are not in the NA part of NATO. Also, it bugs me to put people in the alliance who are very big odds with one of our historical enemies. Its bad enough that our relationship with Russia is on thin ice, so we don't want to add more weight to that ice, unless we really like the cold of winter...Nuclear winter that is.

I'm sorry. I didn't know that its only okay to refer to a leader's actions as the countries actions when its America. There appears to be a lot you don't know. In case you didn't know this: Yushchenko and Tymoshenko are the representatives of the Ukraine up until they're replaced. Ergo, any statements they make now concerning the lease will be meaningless if they are not reelected when the time comes.

What this basically means is that when you said "The Ukraine said GTFO so the lease won't be renewed", you were wrong, because you didn't take into account that the Ukraine can change its mind.
