Charity Work?

Who here has devoted time this year to charity?

I have done a lot of charity work this year through work. Charities ask for radio station personnel to help for free and we sign up; today I spent 2 hours helping toys for tots, tomorow I spend 2 hours at a food drive. I have done almost 20 hours working with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America. I have done several other charity events this year too but I can't list all of them can I?

Seeing as its the holidays and all and the spirit of giving is in the air I figured I'd see what good deeds NSG is up to.

I dont do charity work however give cash donations. My time is worth far more than the minimum wage it would be required to pay someone for my actual being there. We give one time donations every year with this year being no exception.

What is do is voluntary, and free.

I donate money, food and "gently used" clothing. Since I knit and crochet, I'm making blankets and afghans for the homeless and soft hats for at risk newborns. This is not something I do just for this season.

I volunteer my money. My time is never free.

I donate quite a bit of my time to children's hospitals and to local school activities. I also contribute generously to Toys for Tots; one of my favorite charities.

Nor do I, and I wasn't implying that people only do it because of the time of year. I do it all year long as well. I just thought of it because its that time of year where everyone seems to make a big thing about thinking about others.

One of mine too. My very favorite is BBSA (Big Brothers Big Sisters America). Kept me out of trouble when i was a kid.

I used to donate frequently, but it's more rewarding spiritually to actually spend time. Usually, I dole out food at the nearest soup kitchen on Thanksgiving-sort of a tradition-and I do enjoy reading to terminal patients, though we tend to spend more time talking and playing games if it's one-on-one, and for some reason, the hospital feels Rudyard Kipling's Kim is not suitable reading for young boys.

I suppose, but volunteering time comes with other benefits. Seeing new places, for instance; I don't think I'd ever have gone to Brooklyn if I hadn't agreed to work at soup kitchen there. There's also the advantage of it being something to point to on resumes an applications (at least, when you're still in High School or College).
I teach (yes, Fiddlebottoms teaches) basic computer stuff at a community center. Over the summer, I worked at the aforementioned soup kitchen, but I don't have time for that now, with school work and such.

More of my volunteer time is spent on activism than charity, really.

This summer I ran a volunteer program for a farmer's market--I don't know if I'd classify that as "charity", exactly, but it was certainly community-oriented. For the last three years I've participated in the Gulu Walk (http://www.wherewillyouwalk.com/), raising money and awareness for civil war reconstruction in Uganda. I give blood on a regular basis.

I donate what I can...currently, not much, but I try to give at least one toy every year at the Bruins toys for tots drive. I also donate time to do runs, walks and polarbear plunges. I regularly donate blood. I chaperone my sisters class on field trips whenever I can. I frequently try to give some money through http://www.donorschoose.org/homepage/main.html?zone=101 .

All these people donating blood... I got turned down last time I tried, too many nutrients in my bloodstream or something to that effect. It was basically that if they were to give my blood to some people it could cause them to go into shock, so I was lead to believe... o.O

I should not be allowed to, except I lie.

I have had tattoos and piercings frequently since I turned 16. The first time I donated was the one time I donated legally. I have even taken to donating plasma, as you can do that more frequently.

I am regularly blood tested, and use an immaculate pierceing/tattoo parlor (cleaner than many OR's). My blood is clean.

As for too many nutrients, I tend to protien load when I give blood...several times, I've been told "wow...we've never seen the drop sink that fast". Never been rejected because of it.

Maybe different clinics have different opinions on it?

Throughout aech year I will usually spend 400+ hours volunteering between two organisations. During Summer I am a volunteer Surf Life Saver (in addition to working as a paid lifeguard) and also help with training for that. During the whole year I am a volunteer first aider for events.

I would prefer to put in time than money. Partially because I am a broke student, and partially because I can see where my effort is going. Plus, it is great fun.

I totally agree, had a grand time standing outside in 30 degree weather collecting money outside McDonalds and getting treated to free hot cocoa and hugs from restaurant patrons.

Mine has always been at random places...high school gym, local college...things like that. You never know.

Yeah, I do some. I want to do a bunch more. Last year, I raised 300$ to feed a Haitian orphan for a year, as well as a christmas gift thing. This year I am doing the Christmas gift program again, as well as raising money to buy a cow for a family in India (about $400 dollars), and have also helped in donating my clothes to a clothing drive, and my time to help fill a giant container full for that clothing drive. The clothes got sent to Romania and Kosova, I believe.

Are you buying the cow through Heifer, International? That's one of my favorite charities.

I don't volunteer...
If someone (other than my friends & family) wants my time, they have to pay me...
