Excessive drinking has been shown to dehydrate the brain. Electrolytes (such as sports drink) restore the lost moisture and relieve some of the symptoms.

1. Drink like an adult.
2. Sports Drinks against the dehydration.
3. Potato Chips against all the salt you would have lost. Also to fill the stomach.
4. Energy drinks/coffee against the lack of sleep.

That combination got me through countless shifts at work not having gotten home the previous night until 1 or 2 in the morning.

Yeah I have heard, that it works but right now I don't want anymore alcohol til Friday night.

Gauthier and Leon, yeah sports drinks might be the way to go.

Potato chips is a new one I should get myself some.

The best hangover cure I've ever used was giving myself a couple of bags of IV solution. You'll feel great in no time. Of course, you probably don't have the same access to abusable medical supplies as me, so that may be an issue.

Of course, sticking yourself with a catheter isn't always the best thing to do when your hungover. It's never a good thing to do when you're drunk, and I've had the track marks to prove it.

Keep in mind, the science behind that one is much less solid than behind the sports drinks - might just be a tradition I developed with no substance. Anyways, get some food into you and if you sweat as much as I do when you're out, salt probably can't hurt. Calcium is also important.

Yeah, well it is something I will keep in mind it certainly sounds plausible. I don't want to eat to much for fear of bringing it all up again.

I think the best way to avoid a hangover is to drink good alcohol and not the shit I was drinking yesterday arvo.

Substitute: Pickle brine. Get some good pickles (not the nasty kind) and drink out of the jar. Instant electrolyte solution.

It's mainly a dehydration headache, so you need liquids, but you're often short some electrolytes too. Water will help a lot, but you'll probably want to eat a few salty things with it.

Best cure? Don't drink.

Good way to *prevent* hangovers? Drink one cup of water between drinks of alcohol. That helps keep you hydrated.

I've been fortunate enough to never have had a hangover. My ex has had many. His treatment of choice was hot coffee with lots of sugar and milk, a big breakfast (which he promptly threw up) and toughing it out for the rest of the day. The fact that he's a type 1 brittle diabetic is, of course, of no importance.

My own approach is prevention. I always drink alcohol and water at a one to one ratio and make sure I have food with the drinks. It doesn't prevent inebriation, but it seems to prevent hangovers.

To get vomit stains out of leather - buy new leather and have a bucket at hand next time.

Ibuprofen is easily bought at any pharmacy.

Carbohydrates are good. Potato chips are an easy and cheap solution. Mashed potatoes work better. Peanut Butter also works.

Gatorade is good. However, water is cheaper and works almost as well.

Avoid sugar, it will only make you feel worse.

Drinking you own vomit also work. It is supposed to be the best cure for a hangover.

If you vomit while drunk or hungover, your body is trying to expel unabsorbed alcohol from your stomach. Drinking it back will only make things worse, as well as all that acid damaging your teeth, throat, etc.

If you can drink like a man you can take it like a man.

(That said, drink lots of water before you go to bed - that helps counter the dehydration that alcohol has on your body. The next day, more water, some aspirin, and if you feel that your stomach can take it, some lighter food. And make sure that your blood sugar level is up, even if you can't eat yet. Take a spoon full of honey and drink more water, or a soft drink.)

No, no, NO. Don't take aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen after alcohol. Aspirin and ibuprofen are gastric irritants, and can cause stomach bleeding if taken after alcohol. Acetaminophen causes liver damage. And ibuprofen can also cause kidney problems.

Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Alcohol can increase your risk of stomach bleeding caused by ibuprofen. (http://www.drugs.com/ibuprofen.html)

I would say don't get up at 6:30 and ask NSG for help... drink a litre of water and sleep for another 5 hours.

From my experience:
Orange juice
Vegemite on toast
panadol/ibuprofen for the headache (as Daistallia mentioned, it can interact with alcohol, so don't take them close together. Ask your pharmacist. I am not a health professional.)
sleep
when you wake up, watch Indiana Jones or Back to the future. (or whatever your favourite movie of all time is - needs to be something awesome - no annoying mental stuff in it. Just turn away if you decide to watch Raiders of the lost ark when they are doing the drinking contest.)

I honestly found that the best cure is to drink some water, smoke a joint and go back to sleep, the joint numbs you enough to be able to sleep, during which time the water and time take effect.

I neither drink much nor smoke anymore so I guess, ultimately, the best cure is prevention.

If you absolutely have to get up then time really, continue to drink water, eat some food and wait it out, there's no magic cure.

Obviously drinking plenty of water and taking a vitamin before bed. I've found staying up until you feel relatively sober also helps massively, although it can be tough...taking caffeine to stay up after, and only after, you've stopped drinking can, and I emphasize can, be a good idea, but only if you keep drinking water. The diuretic properties of caffeine will help flush alcohol from the body (albeit a relatively small percentage, around 1-3%, and it will later help to flush excess acetylaldehyde, the main cause of hangovers above and beyond dehydration.

I've found the best time to go to bed is the point where I no longer feel drunk and I've got that kind of "fruity" taste of acetylaldehyde; drinking plenty of water and taking a vitamin at that point guarantees there's not going to be a hangover.

It's important to note that most of the best treatments for hangovers are even better as preventatives. If you keep yourself hydrated while drinking(I always ask for a glass of water with each drink I order) and eat on occasion while you're drinking(mexican food is awesome when drinking. Yay Tacos!), you can avoid most, if not all of a hangover. I rarely wake up with more than a case of cottonmouth. *nod*

Plus, if you alternate water and alcoholic drinks, you can usually keep a better tab on your drinking (no pun intended) and avoid getting too drunk too quickly. I personally prefer doing that since I can stay out drinking longer without sinking in to devastating drunkenness.

Also, another big thing is a killer multivitamin. You end up pissing out a lot of those oh so overstated vitamins and minerals. if you can, get up halfway through the night, down some oj, take a vitamin, eat a piece of turkey (something that you can try to keep down, i find turkey works, cheese is a bad call though) and then just hit the sack. if you can get in some fluid before the hangover kicks in but after your done drinking you can nip it in the bud. also, on several occasions, when i was finished drinking, i forced myself to vomit, ridding myself of any more alcohol in my system, and any food that was left in there and could potentially make me sick.

I've always found a big breakfast helps, like a proper full English (although Lord knows if I'm hungover I cannot be arsed to make one, usually) or beans-on-toast made with an entire tin and about four slices of toast.

That and a pint of water or so before you got to bed, and a lot of water when you get up. And maybe some tea, although that is supposed to be a diuretic, so I dunno if that helps.

But he'll be drunk when he's drunk and won't listen to reason...

lol, I'm not that bad when drunk.

The only times I'm too drunk to think about drinking water is when I black out, which happens rarely. Of course, when I do drink that much I wake up on my buddy's kitchen table with police tape wrapped around my head.

Well that sounds like fun and a better situation then I have found myself at times. :p

Lulz.

But true, it can be hard to get water down the next day. I felt that way this morning actually. But I had vomited last night so wasn't too bad.

i hope nobody says a fry-up, cos a cooked breakfast makes me hurl when i have a hangover http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/wuerg/vomit-smiley-007.gif

what used to work for me was just a big jug of water and a couple of tablets of Alka-Seltzer XS. simple.

yeah, that is best. hell, it even cures waking up with a hangover, after sleeping in a tent on a bed of rocks and only getting four hours sleep...

More booze.

Apparently a big greasy full English breakfast works too, if you can face it.

Pint of water before you go to bed, and a pint when you wake up.

Does that include this advice? While I may ask for advice over the internet I won't always be taking the advice of these people without first considering it for myself.
Yes, yes it does. Try thinking about that for a while.
Powerade Zero? I have never heard of that before, though I did head to the deli and brought myself a Powerade.

And time is the thing you have to wait for. I sat on the couch watching TV just to let it pass.
It's Powerade without calories. The main advantage of it is that it comes in quart-sized containers (as opposed to the usual one pint).

Dill pickle juice!

It'll either make you puke or make you feel 100% better. Sometimes I just eat the pickles and I feel better too.:)

Sleep. Hot shower helps too. Your body absorbs the moister in the air and from the water.

Plus, I've found it's strangely extremely effective against nausea.

And maybe some tea, although that is supposed to be a diuretic, so I dunno if that helps.
...that actually just made me nautious.

Am I ever when people are asking for advice? The only real advice I have is more of a preventative...
Find out how many drinks you need to have had to get a hang-over and make it a point to not drink that many in the future...

Don't want a hangover?

Don't stop drinking!

Or, stop drinking alcohol several hours before you go to sleep, and try to drink gatorade or water before you go to bed. Eating a bit of bread also helps.

The cheap nasty beer is what gave me the worst hangover for a long time. I know not to drink so much of that crap again.

I usually just drink tons of water. Sports drinks might work as well. For some reason, masturbation also helps sometimes.

Whatever you do, don't take excedrin. And especially don't take four. Puking blood is not fun.

Basically, if you don't want a hangover.

1. Don't drink.
2. If you drink, don't drink cheap beer, wine, whiskey, etc.
3. Drink lots of water as you drink.
4. Eat while you drink.

4. Eat while you drink.

1. Never :)
2. Sounds like good advice, tonight I will drink some better stuff
3. I will be trying this tonight hopefully I am not so wasted the next night
4. I usually try to eat a large meal before going out but yeah not always easy to do.

I'm off in about 30 mins for another night out so I will try a few preventative tactics while drinking tonight. Thanks to all, who helped even if it was just a joke it brought a smile to my face, I may let you know how it goes.

Actually, one thing that works for me is to stick to white spirits (ie, gin) instead of dark spirits (rum, whisky). It seems to make it better for me. Could however also be that dark spirits are mixed with coke (caffeine) whilst clear ones are mixed with non-caffeinated drinks (tonic water). Try it.

Apparently eating 2 tomatoes before drinking is good for you. I don't know why.
Tomatoes contain lots of natural anti-oxidants. A lot of the symptoms of a hangover are related to the ethanol in your system being oxidised to ethanal(or so I heard). It doesn't take a genius to conclude that anti-oxidants are good for preventing hangovers.
Don't want a hangover?

Don't stop drinking!

Truer words were never spoken.

I heard that the colourants, natural or otherwise, in some drinks can contribute to one's hangover. Clear spirits like gin or vodka would obviously not have these.

I usually throw up, eat something with a lot of grease to counter the sickness caused by too much alcohol or just drink a beer as soon as I wake up with a hangover. Some acetaminophen or aspirin also works wonders.

I always try to drink at least a pint of water, and pop 3 paracetamal, or Iboprofene, just before climbibng(read falling or stumbling) into bed.

That normaly does the trick, except if its Tequila of course. Then I just hold on, pray, and try to enjoy the ride.

Bacon omlettes in brown bread like a sandwich, with a coffee and Tia Maria, plus a pint of water. Hits all of your bases.
