Cystic Fibrosis Not "Diverse" Enough?

OTTAWA -- The Carleton University Students' Association has voted to drop a cystic fibrosis charity as the beneficiary of its annual Shinearama fundraiser, supporting a motion that argued the disease is not "inclusive" enough.

Cystic fibrosis "has been recently revealed to only affect white people, and primarily men" said the motion read Monday night to student councillors, who voted almost unanimously in favour of it.

Ah, I see.

Nothing like voting out of sheer divisiveness, or sheer ignorance...

It is correct to say that cystic fibrosis "does affect Caucasian populations primarily," according to Cathleen Morrison, CEO of the CCFF.

However, the term Caucasian includes people from South Asia, North Africa, the Persian Gulf and Israel, Morrison said.

"These are Caucasian populations," Morrison told CTV.ca. "These people do not have white skin. They have CF, it now seems, in the same ratios as other Caucasian people who do have white skin."

Cystic fibrosis, which is the most common genetic fatal disease in young people in Canada, affects just as many young girls as boys, Morrison added.

So the students are completely stupid, too. Makes me wonder how they got into university. It's apparent to me that their only real motivation was "stick it to white men"

I think it's perfectly in their power to choose who their beneficiaries are, but then, it sounded st~pid.

Presumably they do not contribute to any sickle-cell anemia charities either? If they want to be uniformly stupid, then let them be.

It's one thing to not contribute to a particular charity. I realize that there's not enough money from a particular fund raising event to give money everywhere.

But their rationale for doing so, being both divisive and inane at the same time...

Well actually, being that sickle cell anemia affects black people, then it actually is a diverse enough of a disease to receive charitable funding from that school.

It's all fine if they want to apply their absurd rationale equally. Black people are disproportionately affected by sickle-cell diseases. It's not a "diverse" debilitating illness, so it shouldn't receive funding. Only diseases that can equally impact all races should be funded.

Maybe they should fund research into mental retardation.

Cystic fibrosis "has been recently revealed to only affect white people, and primarily men" said the motion read Monday night to student councillors, who voted almost unanimously in favour of it.How odd. Have they voted to eliminate "sickle cell anemia" as a charity cause, since that predominately afflicts black people?

I suppose they could just chuck them all together as heritable diseases. That's pretty inclusive.

First, this move by the CUSA is irretrievably and indefinsibly stupid.

Second, the reporting on what exactly the CUSA did is rather vague. It sounds like this was a resolution inspired by one student volunteer and other student representatives didn't think it through very well. It also sounds like one naysayer has been hyping the "anti-diversity" angle in the news reports (from the OP story):

CUSA president Brittany Smyth said the idea of changing next year's orientation fundraiser to focus on a different charity, perhaps a local cause, first came up about a year ago.

She said that the part of the motion that refers to why Shinerama has been cancelled is irrelevant, not part of the official meeting record and simply reflects the rationale of the councillor who raised the motion.

"It completely depends on the individual," Smyth told CTV.ca. "It's 100 per cent their opinion. Their opinion doesn't have to be fact or anything really. It's just how this individual felt."

Only the resolution is important, Smyth said.

Third, the CUSA is already planning on reconsidering its actions. link (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/carleton_cystic_fibrosis), link (http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5htCep6bKtDUFm7YDgiY4-rC3yW0A)

Regardless, this is a pretty obscure move by a pretty obscure organization of excitable college students. The "OMG PC run wild" reaction is almost as stupid as the CUSA's decision at issue.

I wasn't sure that was why I was asking - he seems to be saying that things that affect mainly black people are 'diverse' and will be funded because of 'political correctness' - to me he seems to be using 'diverse' as a synonym for black.

I don't know I thought he was using diverse as a sarcastic term. As in the uni thinks cyctic fibros can no longer be funded because it affects white people more and thus is not diverse enough, whereas sickle cell anemia affects black people mainly but is diverse enough to be funded.

He was merely commenting on the notion that PC people, use "diverse" as a codeword for "not white", and that it'd be ridiculous to apply the standard anywhere else in terms of disease research. Or at least that's my take.
