I just recently discovered a wonderful little reggae band called "Kingfisha". Coming across great new talent I've never heard of before reminded me that there are always little struggling bands that really deserve to be heard.

So, what's your favourite music no-one's ever heard of?

We're too kv1t for a myspace.

No seriously we dont have a website. We havent worried about it, because since w're a bunch of poor as shit college students, we are recording on ghetto ass equipment and its hard to get a quality we like (in a lot of our recordings you can only hear the drums because they over power everything else).

Dont worry though. When we actually have enough songs recorded to the quality and manner in which we are happy with them, we'll get a myspace or website up and I intend to epicly and shamelessly self promote.

And NSG will be my first stop.

I suck at this game.

I'm very much into Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars (http://www.sierraleonesrefugeeallstars.com/), although they're already internationally famous thanks to a well-received documentary.

Spiral Beach (http://www.spiralbeach.com/) is a fun, if not especially talented, band out of Toronto. They get radio play at least as far away as Ottawa, so they can't be that unheard of.

EDIT: Almost forgot about Good2Go (http://www.good2gomusic.com/). The lead singer is a special ed teacher by day, local sex symbol by night--kind of a progressive wet dream. The music is decent, too.

There was a band based in Austin called Dropkick that existed for all of five minutes during 1999. They released a single album, called No Time to Be Young, and then were promptly swallowed by the earth itself.
One of their songs, "Four Dead Cheerleaders," has gained some popularity among file-sharers, but is always attributed to either Dropkick Murphy's or Flogging Molly (even though Dropkick sound nothing like either of those bands).
I don't think you get much indier than that.

There's probably a dozen or so Leicester/East Midlands-based bands floating around at the moment that I like. Most well known is probably Maybeshewill. And they always play practically on my doorstep and charge pennies* to get in.

*Ok, admittedly around 400-500 pennies, but pennies nonetheless.

I recently saw a band called Up Dharma Down, not really my kind of music but very nice, they're part of the wave of homegrown music coming out of the Philippines..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M06-KdTGAfs - quite a nice little ditty

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ts0cNzItMlw&feature=related - probably their most famous song, at least within Asia, I doubt anyone's heard them beyond this region.

There's been quite a surge of homegrown music coming out of Asia recently, some of it not bad at all, V has done quite a good job focusing on it, there's some funny statistic that just 5 years ago, 90% of music played on the radio in the Philippines was from either the US or Europe, now it's pretty much reversed.

I should stick some Canto-pop here as well but the only stuff I can tolerate is Faye Wong's covers of the Cranberries songs, and hardly that either...

This thread is like the perfect thread for me. It''d be qucker to list the bands i like that arent obscure.

But, no, thats not what was requested, so here we go with my list of obscure rock and metal bands that no-one I know has heard of

Another Messiah,
Drumcorps,
Estatic Fear,
The Forgotten Archetype,
Fuck Buttons,
Glowworm,
Liva,
Maybeshewill,
Misery Inc.,
Myppa,
Spark is a Diamond,
Ultimate Army of Prawns,
Violent Work of Art,
worriedaboutsatan.

Thats the 1st level of obscurity. There's a whole load of others that aren't particularly well known but I have met other people who have heard of them.

I was given a link to DL a song from one of my MSN contacts who happens to be a member of NS too. I liked what his band did, but I can't remember the name of it. I think they named the track something like "We Made This", but I can't, for the life of me, remember. 8 Days Waiting? Bah! As soon as I remember, I'll post the name.

Dude, I have cds/mp3s or 7"s by at least four of those bands, and you totally lose on Maybeshewill as I already mentioned them in this thread.

And, to be honest, if no one you know has heard of Fuck Buttons, there's something wrong with the people you know.

Yes, there is generally *much* wrong with my friends, if there wasn't they'd not resort to associating with me :p

I can only go by other people's reactions to what I listen to. The interwebs are evidently full of people of more eclectic tastes than my friendship group. Also, on the issue of you mentioning Maybeshewill, as I'm sure you're aware, its actually considered a highly irregular, if not dangerously deviant habit on NSG to read previous posts before submitting.

Are you sure that you're not just 'out of it'? Mind you, I listen to loads of music that has been made over ten years ago, but every now and then I expose myself to something new. That's why I recently acquired two cd's of Lightning Bolt (http://www.myspace.com/laserbeast). Now that's the kind of noise rock I like!

Though I do enjoy Central Deli band that's one band not to many people have heard before.

i like folk music about folk who haven't been born yet. i also like completely synthetic music, stuff all done with electronics, but not so beat heavy as so called trance. i do love music festival jam band music too.

thing is, to my ears, its big name 'mainstream' that's the more and mostly crap, and the kind of stuff i like, very seldom finds its way into so called mainstream. there have been exceptions; kitaro, yani, tangarene dream, but far and away, in any era, they tend to very much BE exceptions.

occasionally we'll get a decade where the mainstream comes close to embrasing it, but never really completely. at least not in the part of the world where i happen to live.

I expect your shameless self-promotion to be quite prominent. You have good musical taste, so I'd be interested to hear your band. What do you play?

As regards to the OP, my answer's the same as KoL's. Except my band does have a myspace (http://www.myspace.com/hallowedearthband) with ghetto ass recordings of some of our songs.

Bands I like that nobody has heard of, it seems:

Sentenced to Burn (defunct symphonic black metal that was well known in the bay area metal scene, but nowhere else)
Tvangeste (Russian/Prussian/Canadian symphonic black metal)
Ludicra (gritty black metal from San Francisco)
The Porno Pandas (groove metal with a touch of prog from the bay area)
Interstellar Genocide (black metal from Germany/USA I think)

that's about it as far as I recall

Me personally? I play bass. The band? We play a punky, melodic raw black metal mostly of the Scandinavian type. Im partial to Finnish and Swedish black metal, while my guitar player is fond of Norwegian black metal (well we all are, but Im talking favorites here), and our vocalist is really into the French scene, so its all represented. And our drummer....likes folk metal :p

EDIT: Now I feel like NSG needs a black metal thread. I may create this.

Awesome. That's a good combination. Our more recent stuff has some folk influence, interestingly enough. How many black metallers do you think are on NSG?

Thanks. I play the same thing as you, bass (the most under-appreciated instrument in black metal), and I do vocals some of the time. On both the songs with vocals on there I'm doing backing and the guitarist is doing lead vocals, but it's the other way around in some songs. And yes, Naglfar is great. We've been thinking about covering "I am Vengeance" for a while.
