'Tis the Season

for bad Christmas movies. I watched something called "One Magic Christmas" last night (It was that or something called "Ruby"). In essence the family was in financial trouble - losing jobs, home, etc. Mom is the only realist in the family, and everyone is on her case about not having "Christmas spirit" (i.e. she's not sufficiently detached from reality to think that if she only believes, everything will be ok). It ended well, with everyone completely ignoring her well-based fears and treating her like all the problems were her fault and would only be solved if she had the right attitude.

I really am not looking forward to a season of similar movies and specials. Couldn't someone do a realistic Christmas story for once? Something where a family gets together, fights, eats, opens presents, deals with disappointment, eats some more, great-uncle Harry drinks too much, funny uncle Ben gets funny with young niece, Mom catches Dad kissing aunt Ruth under the mistletoe - or maybe not. But I swear if I see one more re-imagined A Christmas Carol I may throw up.

What do you hate about the season?

What do you like about it?

What do you wish for it?

As you can see, I hate the smarmy, unrealistic "entertainment."

I like the music (Yes, I'm not Christian, but I love Christmas music) and, now that I'm in Colorado, the whole White Christmas thing)

I wish that the charitable attitude that is so prevalent at this time of year would happen all year because the poor aren't just poor at Christmas.

1) What do you hate about the season?

2) What do you like about it?

3) What do you wish for it?

1) the hype and the fact that the commercial christmas season starts earlier and earlier every year

2) the excuse to make christian based threads on NSG

3) Nothing

I wish that the charitable attitude that is so prevalent at this time of year would happen all year because the poor aren't just poor at Christmas.

What do you hate about the season?

That it's become more about commercialization than spirituality (And that applies whether you're celebrating Christmas or Yule.)

That people are so stressed about completing their shopping lists that at no time do they actually enjoy any of it until about noon on Christmas Day.

That I've had to listen to Christmas Carol muzak in a store and I haven't even had my Thanksgiving dinner yet.

Listening to people gripe about Christmas interfering with their Atheism

Listening to people gripe about Atheism interfering with their Christmas

Listening to the media manufacturing news about everything from new toys to poverty stricken poodles that need adoption.

Hearing Traditional Christmas Carols being re-written to remove words like Jesus, Savior and Christ. (Example: Stevie Nicks' version of "Silent Night")

What do you like about it?

The real Christmas music. I love it.

Christmas Dinner with family.

The reminders of Jesus Christ and what He did for us.

The feeling of peace and quiet I manage to find on Christmas Eve (Because I absolutely will not shop for presents on that day. Even if I'm not done. People can wait until later to get their presents.)

What do you wish for it?

For more people to remember what the holiday is about and get out from under the commercialism.

That's right, celebrating the birth of the Jewish Zombie Cannibal on a day which is most likely not the day of his birth, even assuming that he ever actually existed...

Personally I'm looking forward to this Christmas special (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-JAi4CGGM4), it may not be realistic but at least it has Cybermen . . .

What do I hate about the season? that some undead brat hijacked the holiday from pagan tradition.

What do I like? The whole giving and receiving thing. The family gatherings are good too. Assuming my mother isn't there.

What do I wish for it? Removal of the undead brat for starters. And the hope that we actually have the money to truly celebrate next Yule. We're too poor this time.
