Things that were once obnoxious that you now miss...

On another (Japan related) forum I follow, there's a thread running about an article from the J media about rapidly disappearing things that people miss in Japanese society. I realized some of the ones I miss were obnoxious at the time.

For example, when I first moved to Osaka, every Saturday night at 3 AM, the local bosozoku (Japanese "biker" gang) used to make a run up the big road my place backs on to. They haven't done that in at least ten years. At the time it was o bnoxious, but I kinda miss it now.

So, what're some things that were obnoxious but you miss once they're gone?

My boyfriend and his stupid hat. I really miss that hat, but George had to go off to Art School, &tc.

The creak of the oak tree against the roof of the house. We just finally had someone come and trim it (it's like 75 years old and massive) and now when I walk out the front door I feel strangely naked. Too much sky.

I also miss the walk home from the parking lot to my dorm room my last year of college. I hated it at the time, because it was so effing cold and I'd have to walk a half mile uphill in the wind late at night, huddled inside my parka and smoking a cigarette, and when I got back to my room the warmth would actually sting my face. But now I really kind of miss it--it was a very peaceful, solitary time. I miss the daily drive up and down Hwy 17 to work, too, just not in the rain.

Absolutely nothing. Namely because it always just get replaced by other variations that are just as obnoxious, if not more. At least I can't think of a single thing.

Why does this sound like a story you will be telling your children?

there are a number of things that were more common when i was younger that i do miss. and a lot of things that i don't. there were also a number of things i considered obnoxious, even repulsive, that, at least to a signifigant degree, are no longer anywhere near as common.

as it happens there is no overlap i can think of off hand. none of the things i miss are any of the ones that bothered or offended me then.

main things i miss were all the odd and interesting houses and other buildings that owed no homage to building codes, there being a lot fewer humans on the planet, a lot more passenger trains, really a LOT more per capita, both intercity and local transit, rail and highway both.

there are a few routes now that actually have MORE service then they had then, but NOT in relation to the number of people living in the area served.

i miss the opportunities that i had hoped to grow up into, for living as pretty much of a hermit, that dissappeared as i reached adulthood.

but again, nothing i detested then that i would want back now. just lots of things i loved that are mostly gone, and a few things i found really counterbennificial to everyone i don't miss a damd bit.

i think there were a lot of things OTHER people wanted gone that the're missing the dissappearance of. and i don't think that makes me smarter or anything, just having taken a little more trouble to observe and analyse.
