Global Scares!

It seems that that mankind has always had something looming over them,
promising death,sickness or annihilation.
From the time we first started coming together again, on a world scale,
up until now, we have been told about plagues, diseases, poverty, and more.

The current scare would be global economic crisis,
taking over from oil shortage,
following the bird flue and before that, terrorists.

Some remain for some time, like an undercurrent, waiting to surface again.

My question(s) in all of this, would be if one could make a list or time line from now and back in time, seeing how far we can go.
A secondary question, do people need this threat to be able to live?
Or is it something "the secret society ,)" have cooked up to keep us in check perhaps?

Oh, and apologies for not answering everything and that right away.
Not used to posting on forums, and I am quite shy/afraid to fail/embarrass myself.

My question is; Why are there so many threads about this?

Its something people dream up because they got nothing better to do. I personally think that if something kills off all of humanity it will be movies like Wall-E that are dripping with so much cute they can cause arterial blockage.

Actually, I'd rather somebody be making it up as part of a conspiracy, because that means it's nothing to worry about. However, the 70 million or so people killed in 1918 might disagree with the idea that the threat of global pandemic is not real.
