Who else is excited? :)

I've always loved the stuff, and it seems that I'm not alone - this season, pumpkin pie has leapt right off the pastry shelf and into milk shakes (Jack-in-the-Box), iced cream (Ben and Jerry's), instant oatmeal (Quaker), and who knows what else. I can understand the demand!
So, does anyone have big plans for the holiday? Might they involve pumpkin pie? Mine certainly do!

I am not doing the graham cracker crust because my graham crackers refuse to stick together when I try to make them......I am doing a shortbread cookie crumb crust because while they also fall apart, they at least taste like real cookies.
I miss pumpkin pie, I really do. I finally caved in and got some turkey, kinda. For Thanksgiving, I'll be celebrating with hot turkey pastrami sandwiches. Sadly, the choice came down to either the turkey or the pumpkin pie this year and since I had managed to bake a pie last year, this year there shall be no pie. :(

We don't have thanksgiving in Australia. When the first fleet sailed from England in May 1787 and arrived at Sydney on Jan 26th, 1788 the convicts and soldiers had a drunken orgy that lasted several days.
When you visit Sydney, you'll find that little has changed.

So that's why I haven't been invited to any orgies. I'm in the wrong country.

My favorite personal Thanksgiving story I always like to post for thanksgiving. A few years ago two family members of mine brother and sister recently arrived from Cuba had thier first thanksgiving dinner with us. Gave thanks for living in a free nation like the USA unlike their native Cuba. She, A music teacher by profession plays an awesome Guitar. Learning english and music plans to do the same job in the USA one day. She played the United States of America National Anthem: The Star Spangled Banner for all of us during thanksgiving dinner. As well as a few other patriotic American songs she learned.
For the record should any other Thanksgiving threads appear I will repost this post on thier thread.

I've tried pumpkin pie once. It looked like tuna, and tasted about as savoury but also slimy and disgusting and I felt sick. So, not for me.

I'll wait for other people to go and based on their reports I'll probably go to Subway and get a turkey sub or something. Unless, of course, they have cranberries.

You sure?
I'll eat a little bit of pumpkin pie, but I am trying to lose weight.

I had pumpkin pie once - my Gran was from America. Can't say I liked it much, but then English pumpkins were more for halloween than for eating so they were a bit short on flavour and sweetness. Still it is one of my favourite words 'Pumpkin'.

That's the new Ben and Jerry's flavor: Pumpkin Pie Cheesecake. I would've bought some, but tradition says Thanksgiving is pie time.

Yeah, there's a special kind of pumpkin reserved for pie making. I couldn't pick one out of a pumpkin line-up, but I know they're out there. :)

I love pumpkin pies because I don't care for the taste of them. That makes them very easy to throw. :)
On the other hand, I adore sweet potato pie. Mmmm....

The proper pumpkins are very dark orange, and usually small. They are more dense than most other types of pumpkin too.

You are entering the wrong time of year for that.
While you Americans start early with Thanksgiving, then there is the lead up top Christmas with various parties and then the actual day, then the lead up to New Years Eve stil with more parties and drinks.
Better to wait for the New Year.

Aha, so not unlike a good watermelon then - small, dark and dense being desirable qualities. Neat!

Mmm, pumpkin pie.
I can't help but wonder if the pie-haters here have ever had proper homemade-from-scratch pie. The premade pies they sell in stores are horrible, but the real stuff can't be beat. :)
