News on a serious subject clearly skipping something for pure sensationalism?

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Nov. 22) - Zimbabwe has refused to let Kofi Annan, Jimmy Carter and a South African human rights advocate visit the impoverished country for a humanitarian mission, the three said Saturday.
The former U.N. secretary-general, the ex-U.S. president and rights advocate Graca Machel had planned to assess the southern African country's needs. They are members of The Elders, a group formed by former South African President Nelson Mandela to foster peace and tackle world conflicts. Annan said no official reason had been given for the refusal, but Zimbabwe's state-run Herald newspaper reported that the group had been asked to "come at a later date" to accommodate the crop-planting season. It quoted an unnamed source as saying they were seen as antagonistic toward Zimbabwe's government.
Zimbabweans are suffering from disease and hunger while political crisis over a power-sharing government occupies its politicians. A current cholera outbreak has killed nearly 300 people in Zimbabwe, the United Nations said.
But the three were told Friday night by former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who is mediating the political crisis, that efforts to secure travel visas for the a two-day trip had failed.
"We are very disappointed that the government of Zimbabwe would not permit us to come in, would not cooperate," former U.S. President Carter said at a news conference in Johannesburg.
It was the first time the 2002 Nobel Peace laureate has been denied permission to carry out a mission in any country, he said.
Machel, a rights advocate for women and children who is married to Mandela, said she was denied a visa to visit Zimbabwe in July when she had planned to lead a women's delegation.
Government officials in Harare could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday.

Not only Jimmy Carter, ex President of the US was denied entrance into the country, but also Kofi Annan, former secretary-general of the United Nations and Ms. Graca Machel, wife of Nelson Mandela.

In any case, the reason for this thread is, would the UN be able to mediate and help resolve the Zimbabwe crisis?

Could the case of Zimbabwe's fallen economy and inflation be a presage to what could happen to the rest of the world's economy in the next decade or so?

And what's more, regarding Zimbabwe's government, will it reform this cluster-fuck they've become and in time, rescue it's people from hunger, cholera and the civil war it may face (if it's not already happening)?

Zimbabwe's government will improve once it has been overthrown. I'm sorry to admit something like that, but it's the sorry truth.

I'm inclined to agree there, CM. But if it's to happen, it should happen soon. Already more than 300 people have died do to the cholera outbreak because of poor sewer systems and water ration. And the current government on a deadlock...

Note: I'll be gone for the rest of the weekend. I know one shouldn't create a thread and not come back to it for a while, but I got a few things to do. NSG, discuss this if it's to your interest. I'll come back to it on Monday. Ja ne!

Things will only improve once Mugabe has gone. I don't care what comes afterwards; it's literally an "Anything would be better" situation.

Robert Mugabe continues to make himself look like even more of a tool.

If each action of his that was tool-like is counted as one point towards toolness, Mugabe currently has 632,129,943 tool points.

The only party I think with enough influence to actually do something is South Africa. It has the power to get the AU to remove this tacit support Mugabe still enjoys among the African elite.

But because the South African government still seems to think Mugabe is a war hero who should be treated like he can do no wrong, Tsvangirai can do whatever he wants, he'll still be ignored. So if you want to blame someone, blame South Africa and its stupid, post-colonial attitude.

To help you put this in perspective, a hammer has only 70,000 tool points.:D

Maybe I should create a scale:

The Holy Paradisian Toolness Scale (For determining how much of a tool someone is)

0-99: Opposite of tool, overly nice. Tool equivalent: fluffy bunny
100-999: Not tool, average, not too nice, but mostly good-natured. Tool equivalent: Spatula
1000-9,999: Kinda good-natured, but often a tool. Tool equivalent: nail
10,000-49,999: Tool. Not evil, but an ass. Tool equivalent: screwdriver
50,000-99,999: Complete tool. Still not evil, but not at all a nice person. Tool equivalent: hammer
100,000-999,999: Petty criminal to non-homicidal/sexually deviant felon. Tool equivalent: Powered screwdriver
1,000,000-9,999,999: One time Rapist/Murderer/Criminal Sexual Deviancy. Tool equivalent: Buzz Saw
10,000,000-99,999,999: Serial Killer/Rapist. Tool equivalent: Nail Gun
100,000,000 and up: Genocidal maniac. Evil Incarnate. Tool equivalent: Chainsaw

lol, As far as Jimmy Carter is concerned good, I would not let him in any of my 65 NS nations. Of many different economic, political and social rankings.

I have a better idea to bring about economic, political and social reforms in Zimbabwe. Lets"trade with the dictator, Lets invest in Zimbabwe, Lets send them 2 million tourists $ a year. Lets have economic, political and social dialogue with the dictator, Lets give them loans $ credits. In time they will allow fair muliti political party elections like in Canada and the EU. They will allow all sorts of economic, political and social freedoms. All the nations of the world should follow this policy, like the UN and WA.

There is a time for talkin, and a time for dragging out of beds and shootin. Rather unfortunately its the latter for Robert Gabriel.

Not sure that 'The Elders' was the best choice of name for this group of people - it has a slightly sinister edge that is a gift to conspiracy nuts.

Damn right. South Africa fucked up. And they fucked up pretty bad. When I first heard of the shit Mugabe was up to I had hope in SA getting in and sorting it out. If not that, I thought they would be able to put enough pressure on Mugabe to force some change.. Then I kept hearing more and more about how bad Zimbabwe was sliding. Unfortunately my hope in SA, and Zimbabwe in general, has all but gone. It's such a shame. Fucking shame.
