Submit your odd medical "knowledge", advice, or urban legends

Some fun ones:

On more than one occassion, Japanese doctors have told me "don't bathe when you have a cold."

I've been warned many times about the dreaded "air conditioner disease" that will affect you if you leave your air conditioner on overnight (asside from the fact that I grew up using central air in a nasty climate and never vgot sick from it...)

Blood type personality/diets: Another Japanese fave - people with differeing blood types have differing personality types (akin to the zodiac signs) and correspondingly varied dietary neccesities...

So, what other funny BS have ya'll heard a la this stuff?

I nevber heard that being called a 'disease', but when I visited Japan this summer I found my chest getting rather tight when sleeping with the aircon on. Lack of humidity in the air, combined with never using aircon before, I believe.

Maybe you're simply used to it?

Whenever I visit anywhere hot and put aircon on I get a headache and blocked nose in the morning.

Not medical thing, but my wife and I where talking about the plethora of face creams for women advertised.

I laughingley said, yeah this morning I saw one advitised that drys the skin, expecting her to laugh along with me, because normaly it is all about how the skin of the face needs to be 'hydrated' in order to maintian a youthfull, wrinkle free look, she supprised me by asking 'ohhhh what ine was that, I ned some of that?'

This confused me and so I questioned her with some comment about 'hydration' and she said for 'those of us with greasy skin...'

Greasy skin? No I know about sweat glands, but grease glands? Am I just missing something here?

Or is it all a big fat con?

Or is it all a big fat con? Your skin has oil glands, which helps keep it supple. But being as it's a cosmetic, it's a con. I love how they market shit like that to men now.

The con part is that you can spend $40 on their little 2oz of cream, or $2 on a bottle of rubbing alcohol which will probably work better.

Heh admitedly my wife does look younger than her years though.

ohmygod do you want your wife to go about with a SHINY FACE!?

the horror!

some few face creams are a good idea. i use a mosturizer most days since i live in the desert. higher priced does not mean more effective.

there seem to be a ton of them out now that promise to act like a temporary face lift and/or to remove wrinkles. that stuff is mostly bullshit.

My mother had all sorts of theories about watching television in the dark or sitting too close to the screen when I was a child. And the necessity for eating hot meals. How spicy food is really bad for you and that children need to eat lots of sugar. She also used to insist that it was healthy for children to be really suntanned and used to make me take my shirt off to play in the sun. I am off to get a mole checked out.

You know it's strange I thing that these creams have a lot to do with shinny faces. I'm a typical older man, I have never used product on my face, I wash my hair in normal shampoo and use plain old soap and water.

My face is fine, not shiny, not too dry, my hair is niether fly away or greasy, i look sorta normal.

Do women have differant skin which means thay they have to have creams or suffer shiny faces, or are the products they use the cause of the problems?

I think it's a hormonal thing. Estrogen plays hell with the skin. Testosterone just kills us, but we die pretty.

Yeah. Testosterone really isn't good for us, men are really biologically much more fragile than women.

no

but we are more sensitive to our looks from day to day than men are.

if a woman believes that her make up and skin creams make her look better, she looks better. it changes the way she interacts with the world.

My parents still tell me that cracking my knuckles will give me arthritis but rather ironically have their back put in (*cracked*) all the time as if it is something completely different.

As well, if one has a swiss army knife, a lighter and a steady hand they are fully qualified to perform minor self-surgery.

Yeah I crack my knuckles every day, and I work on the old keyboard for large chunks of it, no problems so far and this is after almost 20 years working on PC's.

Cracking knuckles doesn't cause arthritis, no. It does, however, stretch out the ligaments in your hand. After years of stretching these ligaments it can cause other problems (reduced hand strength, torn ligaments, decreased finger dexterity).

Its best if you don't crack your knuckles and instead stretch your fingers slowly, so you don't distress ligaments and widen the spaces between joints suddenly.

As far as chiropractic adjustments go, they aren't "cracking" backs. Chiropractors manipulate the musculoskeletal system which actually helps (http://newyorkpost.healthology.com/arthritis/arthritis-treatment/video4048.htm) with arthritic (http://www.spineuniverse.com/displayarticle.php/article3097.html) pains (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/556408_5).

My friend today seemed to be under the impression that gender is caused by one's genes, and one is either male or female based on which is dominant. His girlfriend and I rofled.
