What is love?

Ok, before anyone derails the thread with the song from Haddaway. Here is the lyrics.
What is love
Oh baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more
Oh, baby don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more
What is love
Yeah
Oh, I don't know why you're not there
I give you my love, but you don't care
So what is right and what is wrong
Gimme a sign
What is love
Oh baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more
What is love
Oh baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more
Whoa whoa whoa, oooh oooh
Whoa whoa whoa, oooh oooh
Oh, I don't know, what can I do
What else can I say, it's up to you
I know we're one, just me and you
I can't go on
What is love
Oh baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more
What is love
Oh baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more
Whoa whoa whoa, oooh oooh
Whoa whoa whoa, oooh oooh
What is love, oooh, oooh, oooh
What is love, oooh, oooh, oooh
What is love
Oh baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more
Don't hurt me
Don't hurt me
I want no other, no other lover
This is your life, our time
When we are together, I need you forever
Is it love
What is love
Oh baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more
What is love
Oh baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more (oooh, oooh)
What is love
Oh baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more
What is love
Oh baby, don't hurt me
Don't hurt me no more (oooh, oooh)
What is love?
Ok, now that we got that out of the way. What does love mean to you? What is the difference between loving someone and being "in love"? Does true love exist, and if so, what is true love? If true love exist, then how can you tell when you have it?
To me, love is fondness that is shared between two person, between friends, bf/gfs, mother/father and children, etc. There are different kind of loves. Everyone can love anyone, but when you're "in love" you love that person in a more, deeper, meaningful way, a different kind of connection has been made. That what "in love" and "True love" means to me. As to when you know you have it, well I guess you can't really describe it, you just know it, balls to the walls (Thank you Oracle).

Or the version for masochists like me:
"What is love?
Baby please hurt me
please hurt me
some more"
Anyway, love is sort of intangible and indescribable. I know it's cliche to say "You know it when you feel it," but it kind of is that way. The combination of a lot of other emotions really.
Truly loving someone means, among other things, valuing their life and well-being above that of your own. The real ticket is finding someone you feel that way about, and who feels that way about you.

What's love got to do with it?
I have never found a satisfactory way of explaining the difference between "love" and "being in love", and how you know when you're in love with someone. It has to be experienced and interpreted by the individual. If you're not in love, you may think you are, or be unsure; if you're in love, you know. Not very helpful, but there are one or two things that can't be fit into a flowchart.

Anyhow, "love" is an overused word in the English language that is versatile enough to describe how someone feels about an individual within or outside of your family, a song, item, food, or what they feel like doing to a romantic interest. It has 15 meanings in at least Webster's dictionary and it's an emotion based on hormones. The conditions have to be just so for the pair to fall and after a while, it goes to hell.

What is love is very very hard to say - in my experience love is what makes people do thing that they would not to satisfy another be they small things like kind words or large things like major sacrifices it is this willingness to do things for the benefit of another even if they cause the giver to suffer.

On a serious note, I've found love to be sacrifice. How much you are willing to sacrifice to be with that person and make that person happy. Now, obviously, that can be used and abused by the person you are with and then love becomes painful and cruel. However, you hopefully will eventually find a person that won't take advantage of your sacrifice and will meet you halfway.

My avatar approves.
LOVE, n. A temporary insanity curable by marriage or by removal of the patient from the influences under which he incurred the disorder. This disease, like caries [tooth decay] and many other ailments, is prevalent only among civilized races living under artificial conditions; barbarous nations breathing pure air and eating simple food enjoy immunity from its ravages. It is sometimes fatal, but more frequently to the physician than to the patient.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Love protects all things, trusts all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Simple, love is a waste of time. Psychologically, love is the same as insanity, and let us be honest, it is when we let our emotions take over as opposed to logic.
The best comment ever made about love was the following
"Das Licht lösch' ich euch aus, entreisse dem Riff das Gold, schmiede den rächende Ring; denn hör' es die Flut: so verfluch' ich die Liebe!"
