Vampires can make a coat of armour out of it and come brazenly out in the day as well.

We're pretty much doomed really.

Actually, that's a big step forward for solar power. Now maybe more people will take it seriously.

No, I think 3.7 percent of the UV rays would still be enough to fry the suckers if a UV light bulb can.

VKZ will be pleased.

I, however, will not be pleased. I hate cleaning up a mess in broad daylight. These stakes are awfully bloody.

This adds some heft to my idea of plating wind turbines with solar panels to double dip on power generation.

In response to the paper's publication, Professor Darren Bagnall from the Nanoscale Systems Integration Group at the UK's University of Southampton told CNN, "It's a really impressive surface, and to get down to reflectivity from all angles of 3.5 percent is pretty impressive. But it's really only going to deliver maybe four or five percent more power from the solar cell."

Not really.

You can't double dip. You take one dip and end it.

Dude, I know what you mean. In the good old days, I could just stake the heart, cut off the head with ol' trusty and holy Excalibur, and then douse the whole thing with sea salt in Holy Water, some ethanol (Everclear works wonders), and then burn the thing. The coffin has been such a useful thing for keeping the mess contained, and now I won't be able to spend time during the day with a freaking sword strapped to my waist and stakes holstered on a chest strap.

I swear, one of these days somebody needs to find one of those all-powerful kill-the-undead-everywhere-in-one-fell-swoop type of things...hmm. I wonder, something just might work.

Anybody up for a quick trip through Europe? We need to hit Vienna, the Vatican City, and Echmiadzin for starters. After that, we may need to hit Antarctica, as well as scouring Europe for any secret holding rooms.

Not really.

That four or five percent might not sound like much, but that adds up when you take into account that solar power plants, as it were, would be formed from arrays of cells rather than just one cell.

Oh no . . . I'm not helping you look for any secrets in Antarctica. Johnson went to Antarctica looking for secret things and now he's in an asylum . . .

Still not a great deal more. A 100MW solar farm would just produce an extra 5MW. It's not a huge boost like that 30% increase in solar efficiency. You still need a way to convert the captured solar energy into workable energy, and so far, those methods are, insofar as I know, under 30% efficiency when you factor in energy loss.

Now if you boosted the energy conversion efficiency of a solar cell by 30% on the other hand, it would be huge.

However, if it worked in practice, you'd have additional benefits. You don't need the solar panels to track the sun to get the maximum yield out of them; and if they don't need to move, you can pack them closer together.
That in itself probably results in a much larger gain per areal than 5%.

It's not really that simple. Solar panels can only capture the light they get. When at an oblique angle, they physically get less light. So any serious application still needs them tracking the sun.

This might be more significant for homemade applications, though, like fixed panels on the roof - they'll suck a bit less.

Back when I was more enthusiastic about this, I considered installing solar panels. Not to "save on the energy bill" - you couldn't even if always used fully - but more for independent power during outages and such. Counting in the cost of the backup genset diesel fuel, batteries, adding that to energy bill reduction, it can barely but break even. Ultimately though the problems with complicated electrics that are needed to combine grid power and the panels sunk the idea.

IIRC at least some varieties of the real ones have trouble seeing in sunlight, and, being corpses, can also suffer from gradual decay. But nowhere near going up in a puff, just slowly rotting meat.

But nowhere near going up in a puff, just slowly rotting meat. No, they were active at night for various reasons in many legends, but vulnerability to sunlight is a modern invention. Also, the whole gradual decay bit is bunk. Corpses were routinely suspected to be vampires because decay hadn't set in when it was expected.

That vampires can't handle sunlight is a hollywood invention. While Bram Stoker's Dracula didn't exactly burst out in flames, he was significantly weakened in the day time. Which isn't to say there aren't vampire legend dating before him that may be completely different, but Hollywood didn't grab it completely out of thin air either. Light sensitivity has been a longstanding characteristic of vampires. (Quite possibly related to the existence of light-allergy)

It has more to do with Vampires needing to sleep and having an easier time catching people at night.
