Mmm Chocolate

I saw a chocolate bar last night and I just had to grab it... I haven't eaten more than 2 bites of it, but I had to have it for some reason.

My favorite chocolate is probably Hershey's Dark, and so now I ask you people of NS, what is your favorite kind of chocolate and do you have a preferred maker of chocolates?

I love chocolate but I avoid all Nestle products because of their unethical practices in third world countries. Read here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestl%C3%A9_boycott) to understand why.

Selling formula to third world countries doesn't sound so bad on paper... but in action yeah I can see it. Good think I'm not a fan of crunch bars...

One frustrating aspect of the practice is that much of the formula they sell is produced here in Victoria.

Cripes. They'll be boycotting Australia next.

My favorite kind of chocolate is dark. My favorite chocolateer is Ghirardelli.

I sooooooooooooooooooooo miss Ghirardelli. :(

I'll go after just about anything chocolate, though I admit that after going home during the summer for a visit, I found that a lot of the US chocolates are now too sweet for me. I got used to Japanese chocolates I guess.

For Japan, my current favorite maker is Meiji, they make this, well, it's chocolate covered french fries that are just out of this world.

And I'm not sure if white chocolate is chocolate, something to do with the amount of Cocoa.

Technically, it's not (at least according the the USFDA), but it still uses the same ingredients as regular chocolate, just in different forms (cocoa butter rather than cocoa solids) and proportions.

One of the things I like about Ghirardelli is that their chocolate isn't too sweet. It's also a reason I prefer dark chocolate. I seem to have lost some of my sweet tooth.

Those differences are crucial, though. As someone who's allergic to chocolate, I can still eat white chocolate. I'm allergic to cocoa solids but not cocoa butter, somehow.

I tend to prefer milk chocolate to dark chocolate, though dark can be good too as long as it isn't too dark.
I'm ambivalent to white chocolate.

Chocolate is a topic upon which I have much affection and many opinions!

The best DARK chocolate is actually in the baking section -- the bitter-sweet baking squares.

Dark is my preference, and Hershey's and Nestle's but a pale shadow of good chocolate. Try Ghirardelli (http://shop.ghirardelli.com/?cid=Track100), Lindt (especially their Lindor truffles) (http://www.worldwidechocolate.com/shop_lindt_page2.html?gclid=COHtiuat7ZYCFQEoGgodEQPcrw), Leonidas (whose white chocolate is exquisite!) (http://www.leonidas-chocolate.com/?gclid=CMP_8_Ot7ZYCFQHHGgod5l4Krw) or Godiva (http://www.godiva.com/welcome.aspx).

Chocolate is one of those foods where you really do seem to get what you pay for. Hershey's will fulfill your basic chocolate cravings, but that's about it; if you want real chocolate satisfaction, it'll cost you.

My favorites honestly tend to be the handmade truffles from little local chocolatiers - every time I've gone to a non-chain gourmet chocolate shop and bought myself my one truffle, it's been fantastic.

Perhaps you've just built the event up in your mind into some phantasmagorical experience focused on the One Truffle?

I don't eat chocolate very often, but when I do have a craving, I tend to buy little and eat it very, very slowly to maximise enjoyment. Some people think my self-control is edging on madness... :)

One truffle to rule them all, eh?

I'm sure the anticipation makes it that much more exciting, but I'm pretty sure that if I ever stopped being dirt-poor and could afford to buy a whole box of truffles, I'd enjoy every one of them just as much. (There's a confiserie in my area that makes these amazing little truffles filled with raspberry ganache...I could happily eat those forever. *drool* )

As if a musician would ever make decent money....

Perhaps it's just my take on enjoying things in very long and pleasurable episodes. Too much of a good thing in too short a space of time can lose it's goodness, though maybe chocolate can fall into the same category as music and cheesecake as pure sensory pleasure without diminishing ("auditory cheesecake" is perhaps the best phrase to describe music I've ever read).

Thorntons continental dark selevtion is amazing.
