Baldness.

Random question for ya'll.

If you see a youngish man or woman, say 15-25, walking down the street with no hair, what's the first thought that comes to your mind?

Hitler? Cancer? Meh?

Just curious because before a recent personal experience I used to think a fair number of young'ns with no hair were probably skin heads (depending on clothing and such), but that viewpoint has drastically changed. It's not that I was extremely close minded, I just never saw that many and the ones I did seem to fit the skin head mould (from a distance anyway).

And yes I realise this is quite a judgemental thing. But lets be honest, we do tend to analyse most people we see/walk past/meet.

I usually don't notice people when I walk down the street. I try to avoid eye contact with everyone I notice coming near me. And I make sure to walk around them. I usually don't notice if they're bald or not. if it was a guy and I noticed it, I'd probably not think about it much. If it was a woman, I'd probably think that she got chemotherapy, feel bad for her, and return to my book.

I would think cancer, but it does depend on what else they were wearing.

And Hitler why would you think she was Hitler?

Well not Hitler. Just skin head/Hitler relationship. Although doesn't really work with women I guess -- not that I haven't known a woman skin head or two, unfortunately.

I shaved my head as a participant in Cuts for the Cure last October. I got the weirdest looks from people...I wasn't dressed as a punk, so I think a lot of people assumed I was sick. It was a little disconcerting, these sympathetic looks.

I think the shaved head look has become pretty common place among men, however. Whether because they're starting to go bald and are eshewing the traditional 'comb over' (thank goodness) or for other reasons, it's freaking hot. I don't see many 'skinheads' anymore.

Indeed. I shaved my hair earlier this year for a similar cause around March and was quite strange walkin' around. Got a few weird looks from my Samoan buddies.

Now 8 months later all the hair is gone because of the cause! If that makes sense, heh. But you're right, there do tend to be less skin heads around.

trying to cover their head up in some different way i think Chemo patient (like gypsie looking).

Minority. just a normal minority.

Interestingly my high school was in a ghetto (had to ride bus for 1 hour to get there), and I shaved my head after i lost a bet. And none of the black people there even gave me a second look. Seems to be a subconscious white thing.

Looking at both my grandfathers, I don't have much hope.

Then again, I'm lucky that my head is shaped nicely and thus does look good even without hair on it.

In a couple of years I will be sporting a Captain Picard and there's nothing I can do about it. And come to think of it, I don't think I should, either.

It could very well be. But it won't take long for you to be a pixie again if you shave your head on the 19th.

Though, I wouldn't want to shave my head right as winter's coming on.

The last time I had a shaved head, I felt shocked at how cold the world was. That was years ago, though.

Was one of the first things I noticed -- very cold. But summer coming up here and I'm a bit worried about getting burnt. Especially because I'm more susceptible to burning now.

I got an awful sunburn on my head when I did it. It was especially horrible when it started peeling, and flakes of skin about one square inch in area started coming off my head. Ugh. As long as I remembered to wear a hat it was okay. Some people didn't recognize me. One dude gave me the nazi salute. So I decked him. This was freshman year in high school, so I was young and stupid (as opposed to now, as I am no longer quite as young).

It was kinda cool in the summer though, as I'd been used to having long hair and August was much more bearable with just fuzz on my head.

When my head was freshly shaved, I just used regular soap. Then when I got a little bit of fuzz I first squeezed out way too much shampoo and felt stupid, and then I started just using like the amount you can put on your fingertip until my hair grew out again.

Heh, fair enough. Haven't had that happen to me and doubt I will. Pretty crazy though.

Indeed. I'm going away to one of the hotter parts of NZ for summer so it'll be good to feel the breeze! Will definitely be wearing a hat though. Sun burn is bad enough anywhere let alot on the head.

That does sound painful. Of course, velcro and hair in the same sentence tends to sound pretty painful.

I had to get used to wearing a hat when I had a shaved head to avoid sunburn and also keep my head warm. It was weird, because I'm normally not a hat guy.

Yeah, I have long hair now because my mom's dad was quite bald, and went bald really early. I figure I might as well have the hair while I can.

When I do start going bald, I probably will just shave my head, or at least buzz it. Partial baldness with long hair looks really really bad.

Chicks can do the shaved head thing well, too. Especially if they have nicely shaped craniums. It can also draw more attention to one's actual face.

I went bald once. However I only chose to do the two thirds option plus some bright colours. My parents chose to give the last bit the heave-ho. Yeah, well, my hair started to go when I was 17.

I wasn't even completely done with orthodontics yet and I was already getting a frickin' bald spot.

My hair looked ratty if I let it grow out at all anyway (think: Einstein hair) so I'd kept it short anyway -- it got more and more Picard on its own, then I got married, and at the urging of my wife I just sheared the rest of it right off.

I go through electric shaver blades faster than I used to, since shaving my face goes all the way around the sides and back of my head now, but I can't say I miss what's left of my hair now that I'm used to the chrome dome.

I don't do it to look "badass" or tragic or skinhead or anything, I just do it because my choices are partial hair or no hair, and I picked none. Now if the natural baldness would just work down the sides of my head it would save me time shaving in the morning :P
