Vices

I want to talk about Vices. Let's face it, we all have vices, we all have something that we do that we shouldn't be doing on a regular basis. Whether it's for health reason, moral reasons, legal reasons etc. Whatever. My vice, is cigarettes. Yes I did take up smoking, mainly to take the edge off of the stress I've been experiencing lately. Some of us drink, some of us do drugs, and others either starve ourselves or stuff our faces. So, if we accept the fact that most of us have vices, then why do people feel like they need to get on their moral high horses and tell others that what they're doing is wrong? These are the assholes who hate cigarette smokers, and yet they go home and smoke a blunt.

So do you guys have any vices, what are they and have people criticize you for you having said vice?

I occasionally indulge in food inappropriately, and definitely abuse it as a comfort blanket sort of thing. However, I'm in control of myself enough to never let it go beyond certain measures, which is why I am not, and never have been, overweight.

And I damn well get to criticize for example (heavy) smokers who inconvenience/molest other people when they have to have a cigarette at times when there is no place to smoke it without bothering non-smokers around, whereas my chocolate, if I do consume it in front of others, neither gives off a strong smell nor does it have potential to negatively affect the bystanders' health.

Why couldn't the non-smoker move to another area?

Why couldn't the non-smoker move to another area?

They're in a car / bus / train.

They're in a closed room.

But these settings aside, it is not the non-smokers' responsibility to move away from smokers, but the other way around - just like people who are too loud have to tone it down or move someplace others aren't bothered, people who like to expose their naked bodies have to do so in places others aren't bothered by it, etc.

So, if we accept the fact that most of us have vices, then why do people feel like they need to get on their moral high horses and tell others that what they're doing is wrong?Because it's a vice, and vices are by definition wrong.
Well, no, that's not the reason of course; the reason is it's fun. Being right is fun enough in itself, but getting to tell someone else they're wrong is even better. And the sense of accomplishment and superiority is a total high. Seriously. I mean, doesn't it feel good to just tell people to get off their moral high horse? That's the exact same thing.

I don't smoke anything. If I were going to use weed, I'd do it in a non-smoking form. I have a really sensitive respiratory system. So basically smoking anything is a stupid idea for me. Not that it's a really smart idea anyway.

I think we're misunderstanding the meaning of Vice.

Vice - frailty: moral weakness
-a specific form of evildoing; "vice offends the moral standards of the community"

Hence, vice is something considered Morally incorrect, thus no, cuddling would only be a vice if it offended you. :p

I've thought about it, and I really don't care to. As long as I take it in small doses (No more then four cans a day, at least two) I should be fine. I don't get the shakes too bad, and I have headaches on a normal basis anyway. His liver was probably shot by the time he got out of high school, no?

They're not healthy either. They're suffering massive amounts of calcium deprivation and will have horrible osteoporosis while your bones will be good and sturdy.

you presume there's a rational reason to eating disorders. There isn't. You also presume that simply pointing out that the eating disorder has no rational reason will stop a sufferer from engaging in that behavior. It won't. At least, no more so than going to someone who has the flu and yelling "hey you, stop having the flu!" will make them better.

as for the topic of the thread, I don't have many vices. I smoke sometimes, drink occasionally, but neither to any appreciable amount. I probably stay up later than I should, but I've never been one to need much sleep.

However this whole clean and sober lifestyle is not because of any aversion to the opposite. In fact, just the contrary. My greatest vice, if it can be called such, is extraordinarily poor self control. I don't tend to stay in the middle ground too well. I like my job, I like my apartment, I like my friends.
