Jail Time for Fat Cats

Owners, that is.

So, what do you think of this development in the UK? I used to think all the nutty laws came from California (and it wouldn't surprise me a bit if California passes something like this).

As the owner of a "fat cat," I find it disturbing. Sometimes, albeit rarely, animals are fat because of physical problems like hypothyroid.

Read the full story at DailyMail.co.uk

I see what you did there... trying to palm off the Daily Mail as a reputable source.

The saddest thing is that a significant number of the people who read this will come away with the impression that there'll be people surreptitiously keeping an eye on their pets from now on, ready to leap into action with arrest warrants if they put on a bit of weight or go out in the sunshine. The little "Although breaking the code is not an offence" and "if they are taken to court, failure to follow the code could be used against them" caveats will drowned out by the sensationalist tone of the rest of the piece.

You have to hand it to the Daily Mail... they're pretty damned good at what they do. :p

You can try to shout down the facts all you want, but the rest of the world still knows the truth. You're all a bunch of pet-weighing, tea-sipping psychos who wear enormous top hats and bow ties.

Those silly Brits, allowing obscene obesity to be construed as a form of cruelty. If we had such a law in America, tons of parents would be jailed for child abuse.

Read the fucking article properly. If you don't conform to the rules, and you get sent to court, that might possibly be taken against you. This is not "have a tubby cat/dog, go to jail for a year" (however fair that would actually be for basically purposefully giving something living diabetes), this is "you might stand a very slim chance of a fine or maybe jail if you end up in court over this". Christ, man.

Regardless of how you view it... its still rediculous. I DID read the article and I am still under the impression that its a stupid thing to be eforcing no matter how you look at it. There are too many people in institutions in the UK just like in the USA, locking pet owners up because of thier pudgy pup is stupid. Legislation needs to be passed to lower the number of inmantes, not vice versa and stupid shit like this not the answer to any REAL problem in the first place.

Cruelty to animals is against the law. If someone is taken to court for cruelty to animals, then the fact that they overfed the animal and let it get obese will be taken into consideration. That's all it says.

Yeah, flee! To a country where you can make as many cats disabled as you please! I really hope for your sakes that nothing actually bad ever happens to you because based on this form, you aren't going to be able to cope.

Are you guys, really getting up in arms on account of this British law? Come on! Although it´s laughable, it denotes the British system cares about pets as much as it cares about humans. That´s all.

The best part about that story is the phrase, "decapitation of wildflowers at the roadside without rational reason." It sounds so goddamned lyrical, I almost want to take it seriously.

Please, my first cat was overfed, she was fat but she was never disabled. She was still a very active and healthy cat.

I also like this:
Beat Keller is a molecular biologist at the University of Zurich. Keller recently asked permission of the government to conduct a field trial of a genetically modified wheat bred with a resistance to fungus. In order to actually gain permission to go ahead with the trial, he needed to hash out the potential threats to the dignity of the wheat.

Well, healthy cats aren't going to come up in a discussion about cruelty to animals are they?

People react hysterically to these kinds of things - the Switzerland thing is such a non story it is unbeliviable but people seem to get more wound up about these things than over important things like going to war or letting sick kids go without healthcare.

Actually, it cares about them more, because, as far as I know, there isn't any law like this regarding children.
