Lets Talk About Net Handles.

SaintB
09-11-2008, 13:52
All of us here on NS use a nickname of some sorts, a handle if you will. I got one question about it....

How'd you get it?

I got mine in High School. I had long hair, I was freindly with everyone and well liked, and so big that nobody wanted to make me angry. I got my nickname when someone said "He reminds me of a big dog, like a Saint Benard!"
It stuck.
Right about my senior year of High School it got shortened to Saint B because it was easier to say (and some people though it sounded like a rapper name, which made it cooler somehow). Thats pretty much how it came to be. I started using it on the internet when I couldn't think of a better name.
Blouman Empire
09-11-2008, 13:54
My two nicknames (depending on who it is) are variations on my first name.

Wait a minute are you talking about our account name or nicknames away from NSG?
Londim
09-11-2008, 14:30
Well Londim is a completly random word I made up. My real life nickname came about on the first night of university with alcohol playing a key component (and the strangeness of a few of my ex flatmates. I miss living with them)
New Wallonochia
09-11-2008, 14:34
My original nation "Wallonochia" was a word I made up that would sound fitting as a Grand Duchy. As for other nicknames, my radio callsign in my unit is "Frenchy" because I'm a raging francophile and speak fluent French.
Benevulon
09-11-2008, 14:41
My nation was originally supposed to be an evil dictatorship thingy called 'Benevulon', like how some real nations tack on stuff like 'The People's Free Democratic Republic of Whatever' as if that'll fool anybody. That's... Pretty much it. I usually call myself Mehuyael in online places. It's a character from a LARP I played who I liked.

What IS your real nickname?

What IS your real nickname?

Jonty, which if you knew me in real life would make no sense whatsoever.
Dumb Ideologies
09-11-2008, 15:01
I thought "Net Handles" were what were used to open the doors to the Internet so that men could be sent in to unblock the intertubes whenever webpages go down.

Hmm...Well, my nation name came from the a lyric in a song I was listening to when I was on the nation creation page. Then I reasoned that this name reflects my distaste for closed-minded acceptance of all the tenets of an ideology rather than thinking for yourself on any given issue.

Real life nicknames? Well, I had several based on my old name, but none now. Though I'm pretty sure quite a lot of people on my course have unflattering nicknames they use for me when I'm not around.
Lapse
09-11-2008, 15:04
NS: back in high school (this is 2002 we are talkin bout here)talking to someone online, and just somehow "Time Lapsed". I used Time Lapse for about a year. When I came to NS, I shortened it to Lapse (because it sounded better). Since then I have also used apocolapse. (because I didn't know how to spell (apocalapse) and of course, Apocolapse Now.
H N Fiddlebottoms VIII
09-11-2008, 15:55
I thought "Net Handles" were what were used to open the doors to the Internet so that men could be sent in to unblock the intertubes whenever webpages go down.
And I was of the impression that net handles were what men got when they spent 6+ hours a day looking at porn and news websites, and never exercised.

And mine are whatever stupid thing comes to mind at the moment I'm signing up. "H N Fiddlebottoms VIII," "Existentialist Shoe," whatever.
Khadgar
09-11-2008, 16:27
Away from NSG I use the name Eban. It's short, easy to remember, and easy to pronouce. Sorta, some say it E-Ban, rather than Eban (like Evan).
Pirated Corsairs
09-11-2008, 17:16
I've used a variety.

My NS name, well, I wanted a pirate-themed name (I had heard about NS from a Puzzle Pirates (www.puzzlepirates.com) player, and wanted to join their pirate-themed region), so I tried variations on different words for "Pirate" until the god damn name got accepted.

I've also used the handle Zangor for many things, and it means absolutely nothing; I came up with it when I was, oh, I don't know, 12 or 13 years old, when I started playing Runescape. (Yes, I used to play that. I was a fool.) It stuck, so I use it for a number of online games. I've even been called it in real life one or two times by people I originally knew through online gaming.

And I also tend to like to use "Browncoat" or "Browncoat Nick"(Nick being my first name) or some such Firefly reference.
Katganistan
09-11-2008, 17:16
Katganistan is a variant on one of my RPG character names, made to sound like a country.
Yootopia
09-11-2008, 17:19
Mine used to be PrejudiceSucks before I realised that agonising over everyone was hard and time consuming, and hence prejudice is vaguely ok, normally on forums etc. it's jBrereton, because that's my name, and I picked Yootopia because it was like Utopia, but that was already taken and such.
Sdaeriji
09-11-2008, 17:21
Sdaeriji was a name I came up with for a civilization in Civilization II, and I've carried it with me ever since. I literally created it by randomly typing letters until I liked it.
Trotskylvania
09-11-2008, 18:02
"Trotskylvania" was a nation in a setting I helped create for a whimsical D&D campaign. I used when I found NS (because another one we used, "Marxylvania", was taken.). So now, til the end of time, I shall be known as Trotsky...

I suppose there are weirder ways to be associated with a flamboyantly gay communist leader.
Soheran
09-11-2008, 18:13
He was being chased. So he ran.

(Not really, but someone noticed that at some point and it's stuck in my mind.)
Poliwanacraca
09-11-2008, 18:20
"Poliwanacraca" was just something I came up with off the top of my head. I wanted something that sounded like some tiny island nation no one had heard of, and the stupid pun made me giggle, so I ran with it.

For non-NS screennames, I mostly use words in Quenya or Sindarin, and often variants on my real first name, which is itself in Quenya.
Kyronea
09-11-2008, 18:24
All of us here on NS use a nickname of some sorts, a handle if you will. I got one question about it....

Kyronea is a nonsense word I thought up on the spot after deciding I was no longer going to use combinations of fictional character names plus my initials.
Saige Dragon
09-11-2008, 18:27
Haha, Saige was some hot chicks name in school and Dragon, well 'cause... Anyways, it was actually the name of a spaceship I had in a video game way back when, long before NS and I couldn't be bothered to come up with something better when I created my nation.
Conserative Morality
09-11-2008, 19:14
It's because at one point I was a Conservative, and thought it'd be funny to leave out the V (I had just seen V for Vendetta), and signify that I was moral to all teh ebil godless liberals I was sure that were on here.;) Glad I'm past that.

My other one net handle, Tombombadil99, comes from 99 is just before 100, the Roman Numeral for which is C. C is in two of my three of my RL names (First and middle), and 100(C) -1 (The amount of names I have in which C is not in) is 99.

And Tom Bombadil is really freakin' awesome!
Sarkhaan
09-11-2008, 19:18
The Ugly American plus an extra A.

others are usually my first initial and last name, or zbronto (z from zombie because I never slept in high school, and bronto because I am tall)
The Plutonian Empire
09-11-2008, 19:40
My nation name is because I was obsessed with going to Pluto, which was, and still is, one of my favorite celestial objects, and starting an inter-galactic empire. On other forums, I go by PlutonianEmpire.

I'm almost past that now.
Protochickens
09-11-2008, 19:44
A friend and I were in a discussion once about the chicken and the egg paradox. I said that surely, the egg came first, because the chicken's most direct evolutionary ancestor must have laid the first chicken egg. That is, the first chicken would have been produced by a protochicken.

Of course, my friend is actually an evolutionary biologist so he told me I was wrong with a long and convoluted explanation about how species don't really exist and evolution is too gradual to make those kinds of distinctions ... but whatever. Forget him.
Wilgrove
09-11-2008, 19:54
Wilgrove was the first airport I ever flew out of.
TJHairball
09-11-2008, 20:17
T. J. Hairball was first used to sign a letter to my first girlfriend, off the Internet. We had something of a game of throwing around nicknames. When I started using the Internet, I started using it as a handle.
Holy Cheese and Shoes
09-11-2008, 20:32
Random crap that came to mind when I was asked "what will you call your country?" after seeing you could also have a "most serene republic of" as a prefix.

My normal net handle is Poohead, based on the fact there were far too many serious names out there when I first started playing online games (from Quake1 really.... Which makes me feel old)

Extreme Ironing
09-11-2008, 21:08
This one is just from the sport that makes me giggle when I think about it.

Outside of NS I've used 'Yian' or 'Yana' extensively (the first like the Welsh name 'Ieuan', although I came up with the sounds and different spelling years before I knew of it), depending on the character I'd chosen in a game.
Ashmoria
09-11-2008, 21:12
its my name.
Veblenia
09-11-2008, 21:16
I found NationStates while I was avoiding writing a review for Theory of the Leisure Class. I dug Veblen's thinking, if not necessarily his writing, and the idea of a state modeled on his theories tickled me.

I know. Best story ever.
South Lorenya
09-11-2008, 21:36
As for the South Lorenya part:
I needed a bunch of place names for something, so I shoved random letters togetehr to produce some. Lorenya was one of those, and I enjoyed it enough to use it for multiple other places (including an NS nation I made back when they had only thirty issues). That nation died form disuse, and when I returned I didn't want to hassle the mods to revive it, so I went with South Lorenya.

As for the DragonAtma part:
If you play good video games, you should remember Atma from FF3 (the real FF3, not the NES/DS FF"3"). But many other people use Atma as well, so I switched to DragonAtma.
Dyakovo
09-11-2008, 21:44
Dyakovo was one of the Rus City-states circa 850 AD and I like the sound of it...
Nanatsu no Tsuki

Nanatsu no Tsuki means 7 Moons in Japanese. Here´s how I got it.

Vampire Knight Zero

Vampire Knight Zero comes from the Anime Vampire Knight. Simple! :D

NERVUN
10-11-2008, 00:42
My usual Net handle of Jusenkyo Guide comes from Ranma 1/2 and HS where a friend of mine and I were amusing ourselves by deciding who among our circle of friends matched characters from Ranma. We got stuck on me because I just didn't match anyone in terms of personality or looks until my friend finally looked at me and said, "I've got it! You're the Jusenkyo Guide! You ALWAYS know the answer, but you only give it once it's too late."

Since it's rather unique, and I can register it without having to change it, it's stuck.

NERVUN, as I have said many times, was SUPPOSED to be NERV-UN (NERV from Evangelion and UN), but for some reason, NationStates had a problem that day and didn't like the dash.

That would also explain you using Ayanami Rei for your icon. Why didn´t I, a consecrated otaku, make the connection?!

I never noticed until somebody made fun of his spelling in a thread, confusing me, and he said something to the effect of "Okay, I was tired when I made this name, okay?!"
Even then, it took me a few looks to figure out what it was. I kept mentally inserting the v.

(As I recall, the person meant a spelling error in the post, actually. :D)

Cannot think of a name
10-11-2008, 02:47
All of us here on NS use a nickname of some sorts, a handle if you will. I got one question about it....

How'd you get it?

Guess.

My real life nickname came when a friend of mine tried to make her boyfriend jealous telling him that she hung out with this guy and went to movies and all this fun stuff (I was a slacker and needed a co conspirator, she was it). She was upset that he didn't get jealous and I asked her how she described me, she said she told him I looked like a walrus, I told her we found the problem. She insists that she didn't mean for it to be mean, but to tease her I would use it anytime I had to create an alias. I did it at a bar trivia game when I returned to the record store and since there were already three employees with my real name and the novelty of someone called 'Walrus' the name stuck. Now there are people who still only know be by that name, though most of the time I go by my real name. Sometimes on shoots I'll use 'Walrus' if there are people with my name to make it easier on the production co-ordinator or assistant director.
Dinaverg
10-11-2008, 02:55
I wanted it to be like 'diverge'. So, like a lazy person saying 'dinner'; [Dinnah]verg The pronuciation changed with shortening, it seems, so Dina is just 'DEE-nah.
Peisandros
10-11-2008, 03:01
Peisandros came from somewhere looking at Greek or Roman mythology, can't remember. Thought it sounded like an okay left-wing utopia. I also used nzbOynz for a lot of my early gaming, which got shortened to bOy by most people.

As for RL nicknames, none that don't relate to my name in some way.
Nanatsu no Tsuki
10-11-2008, 03:03

I went as far as thinking NER-sama´s name was a romanji way of saying some foreign word in Japanese.
Mu Cephei
10-11-2008, 03:20
Mu Cephei is a random star (guess what kind) I did a research report on and I liked the sound of its name so I used it.

My RL nickname comes from a certain event in my high school career. I was one of the most devoted members of the hiking club going to every trip and going to the club's meetings on time every time. One day on an overnight trip in upstate New York a group of seniors who were only on the trip because they asked permission from the club (they weren't members of the club) were staying in the same room in the cabin. This was a problem because everyone needed to get to sleep and there weren't enough beds for all the guys to go to sleep in.

Being the highly devoted member of the club I asked them to spilt up and go to sleep in separate rooms. They responded by saying they were making memories. I responded by saying memories are wireless so it wouldn't matter if they were in separate rooms. Everyone, but me had a good laugh at this statement.

Thus they started calling me wireless instead of my real name and when some of my friends overheard this they did so too. This lead to me using it as my official nickname.

German Nightmare
10-11-2008, 03:57
My soccer coach referred to me as "The Nightmare" (for him, our team, and any opponent we faced, to be honest) and the team picked it up, trash-talking other teams about how they had a German on the team (who only played soccer for fun in the streets and wasn't at all that good - but dedicated).

German Nightmare. That stuck for the internet.

Some of my friends refer to me as "Digga"/"Dicka"/"Dicker" (from German dick = fat, in the meaning of "phat") based on the Hamburg slang for buddy/homie.

Others in the apartment building I live in refer to me as "Der Dude" (combo German/English).

Either that, or people refer to me by my surname. For some reason, that happened back home while in school and also here while at college independently. Guess my name's just too good a nickname not to use it.

I had a sports nickname too but it didn't carry over. I was called "The Tower" because I was larger than everyone else by a head.. the team would rally to me on the field because I was easy to find.

Lame, I know. :p
As for non-NS/Internet related things, my nickname is CIA. (Lit. C. I. A. Pronounced just like the government organization.)
Really.
Something about being a "sneaky bastard", or something like that.
It's stuck since seventh grade, and I'm in twelfth now.
Forsakia
10-11-2008, 06:57
Name variation I'm afraid. Elsewhere I wander around as corporeal, because originally I liked the sound of ethereal and used that, then forgot the passwords for the accounts so I flipped the meaning to get to corporeal.
Big Jim P
10-11-2008, 08:05
"Big Jim" came about because I am usually smaller than most of my friends. On FP I am "His Jimness" (no, I am not at all self-centred).

I have had quit a few other nicknames as well:

"Darkwalker" - I wear black and prefer to walk instead of drive. Go figure.
"Frankie" - A reference to Frankenstien inspire by my wearing of black combat boots.
"Devil Boy" - I have no Idea how that one came about.
"JP" - My Initials.
"Greatness" - No I am not shy or quiet about my greatness.

Psychotic Mongooses
10-11-2008, 20:39
Always had an affinity for mongooses, meerkats and the story of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi.

Small, wiley little fuckers who take down more dangerous things than them. Plus, I've been told I have extremely fast reflexes but take ages to be stirred into action. I use variations of Mongoose a lot in my gaming names as well or other handles on other fora.

The Psychotic bit I hate but other variations were long gone when arrived to NSG. People just call me PM which is fine and dandy.

DrunkenDove
10-11-2008, 21:30
Dove is the approximate meaning of my name when translated into Irish. Well, that and "Scar", but I had no intention of going around calling myself scar, as that's way too much of a wanna-be hardguy name.

In RL I go by Clom, which makes me sound like a power ranger bad guy. Although my new friend have recently started calling me Jesus, because of the whole long hair and beard combo I sport.
Quintessence of Dust
10-11-2008, 21:31
This thread needs more Monkeypimp.

Anyway, my NS names (Gruenberg, Golgothastan) are of no notable origin. Quintessence of Dust comes from Hamlet: the speech Withnail does at the of Withnail and I.

I don't really have a standard net handle, but the one I use on most IRC chans is the title of a Sigur Ros song I really like, I guess because on the Internet choosing a username I couldn't actually pronounce seemed like less of an issue.

10-11-2008, 21:52
My nation name has nothing whatsoever to do with the nicknames I had as a kid. Those nicknames will never (with good reason) be known by anyone here. My nation name is a result of randomly putting things together until I found a combination that hadn't been used before - it's odd that it, in many ways, fits who I am.
Partybus
10-11-2008, 22:09
My NS name Partybus came about because I was reminisceing about a road trip I took back in the '80's, in a VW bus, while I was signing up...

My usual net handle (and real life) is Jigglepete derived from my 15 minutes of fame as the mascot (I like to say icon) for the Boston based jam-band Jiggle the Handle. The band broke up, but the name stuck within that circle...plus I like it...
JuNii
10-11-2008, 22:23
All of us here on NS use a nickname of some sorts, a handle if you will. I got one question about it....

Errinundera
11-11-2008, 02:17
My nation's name was inspired by my favourite place here in Victoria - First Creek Falls which is in the Errinundra National Park.

When I found NationStates I didn't have a map handy (I suppose I could have looked it up on the net) and misspelled it. Some old maps have variant spellings and I couldn't remember the official one. Now I'm glad I got it wrong - my nation has its own spelling!

I was always known as that "Stalinist" or that "Sino-Russian" or that "fool who thinks communism is greater than democracy" which makes no sense since they can't really be compared. Of course, I do lean to the left, but I'm no Stalinist.

Then, I had the bright idea of screwing with the name Vladivostok.
Thus, Stoklomolvi was born. The m was from "Molotov" for no reason at all.

My other nickname, Crossbowman, came from my fascination with the crossbowmen from the Stronghold PC game. My lord, those guys were epic.

Yes,I admit I googled "Existentialist Shoe". If I had the patience, time and dedication for another victim, I'd stalk you.
There wouldn't be much point in trying anyway, I use a different handle everywhere I go. Fiddlebottoms is here; Shoes was way, way back in the day when I used Yahoo Messenger.

Western Mercenary Unio
11-11-2008, 16:01
My NS name came from a book I'm writing. In it, the main character are all mercenaries working for the Western Mercenary Union, which is fighting the Eastern Mercenary Coalition. Other handles include Kiril456 or variations(My first name is Kiril). My other handle is Rosvo or varaitions( rosvo means bandit in Finnish). My Xbox Live handle is Rosvo1, if anyone wants to add me.
Vojvodina-Nihon
11-11-2008, 18:40
I make up a different net handle for every website I create an account on, more or less. Vojvodina-Nihon is only the most recent of my NS nations and was created by mashing together the names of two real places. Other nations (Siev and Murra are still around, for instance) were pretty much picked at random.

I also have no real-life nicknames (partly because my name is fairly short anyway, partly because I have no friends to use them) and don't really use IMs (again, nobody to talk to over IMs). Names are thus transitory and inconsistently used.

I had a nation called Ichi Ni (1, 2 in japanese) when that nation got deated, I just pushed the two numbers together and got Junii (12 in japanese).

Euroslavia
11-11-2008, 20:56
Believe it or not, I created 'Euroslavia' back in 1999 (before this game was even up), when myself and a few friends, in 8th grade, created our own mini-nationstates thing, where we would each write on a piece of paper about our nation, have conversations between our leaders, and wage war. It was really fun. The first nation I went to war with was called "Hawkowania". My friend Kelli and I dominated the game, through our alliance. :)

My nickname came from here, nationstates. I use it on a couple of places on the net, and also on xbox live (add me if you want, zilam428. I usually play CoD4, soon to play CoD5) :D

I'll try to remember the two of you when I get home from work. I'm Browncoat BDH on Xbox Live. I haven't been on as much recently, but now I'm starting to play CoD4. (Not that I'm any good, I've only just started the single player campaign, have played very little multiplayer. :$)
Oh, and any other Generalites, feel free to add me, too. :)
AB Again
11-11-2008, 23:53
My name is because I am a reincarnation of an earlier self who was known at the time as AB. This was in the epoch when lots of handles were shortened to initials (TIN, CTOAN, etc. etc.) The name was Alien Born which is,as was explained at the time, an anagram of my RL name. (First name and surname)

My nickname IRL is Rhino, make of that what you will.

My NS name is the result of frustration in finding a name I wanted that wasn't already taken and an overheard word in a minibus full of cadets I was taking kayaking.

I was watching "Just Shoot Me" as I was making this nation.
Abdju
12-11-2008, 00:03
My name on NSG was simply the name for my state. Abdju was an ancient Egyptian city that was a major political base in early times and a cult centre, so it was a natural name for my state. I used the same handle in a few other places as well as it's short and rarely taken.

I don't really have any nicknames as such.
