Vote for the First Dog

So the Obama girls will get a puppy. What do you think they should get?

I think, because there are so many stray and abandoned animals, that they should set an example for the rest of us and rescue a dog from a shelter or rescue placement organization like Luv-a-Pet.

i was thinking more along the lines of a first fennec or a first red panda.

for cannids, how about a manned wolf. kinda like an overgrown fox.

of course the problem with exotics is house training. but i'm sure there are some.

anyway its for the kids, and exotics have special needs kids might have a hard time learning to understand, most of the rest of us for that matter.

so i think if what they want is cannids, let them have cannids.

(i would love to see a wolf anthro chaising sara palin in a black hilicopter though, just for grins (the wolf in the hilicopter chaising, sara on the ground running, incase that wasn't clear enough))

They are going to the pound/shelter, that's what I've read. I have a shelter dog, actaully she was given to us by a neighbor who couldn't keep her, as they were moving away and the place they moved to wouldn't take pets.

But a lovely mix. Part Aussie and part Colie. Loves anyone and everyone around her and demands regular tummy rubs. lol

Surely there are better things that Obama should be thinking about as what to do when he takes office.

surely there is something more newsworthy than whether a couple of girls get a dog.

And why a dog? Why can't they have a cat? Or a turtle?

Because we need something light after the last few months of heavy, frequently acrimonious and divisive, politics. Pets are relaxing, amusing and not divisive. We may not agree on who should be in office, we may not agree on what kind of pet they should have, but we all agree that pets are good.

Actually, they are one of the most intelligent dog breeds.
They are playful, however. Swimming in the middle of winter isn't stupid when you have two layers of fur.

A golden was my first dog. While she was the family dog, everyone knew she was mine (mom would tickle me, I'd yell "stop", and Jessee would be there biting at her. The one time she bit me [I was holding a bagle which she went for and missed because I moved] she came over and licked my face for half an hour. The one time she bit my sister, she licked her face once and went to bed)
They win every contest.

You too? It seems to have worked out well for me, seeing as I have the most wonderful doggie in the world. :)

Mostly cats these days, but my first dog, back when I was about five or six, found me by slipping his owners leash, jumping a fence, and tackling the idiot child who responded to a charging large breed dog by opening his arms to give it a big hug and exclaimed "DOGIE!" I scared the shit out of my parents. Fortunately I was correct in my assessment when I informed them, "Don't worry, he LIKES me!" His owner showed up short of breath and said she's been looking for someone to give him to because she was moving somewhere she couldn't keep him. He was a pedigreed show golden . . .

Aw, cute.

My story's a little less charming - my dog was dumped by the side of the road by some asshole. We met when she wandered out of the woods and into my yard a day or two later as a bruised, starving little puppy. I was eating breakfast when I saw a fuzzy little face pressed up against the back door, and as soon as I came outside, she proceeded to wag so hard you'd think her butt would have fallen off and try to climb into my lap and give me kisses. For all that I wasn't looking for a dog, didn't particularly want a dog, was in fact allergic to dogs, she convinced me that she needed to stay forever inside of about half an hour. :D

As for the second photo you have there ... looks *remarkably* like one of the posters here ...

They win every contest.Wifey's convinced it'll be the lab or the retriever as the first dog for our twin dudes. What'll probably end up happening is both breeds as puppies. :)

You really cannot go wrong with either. Both dogs are hugely intelligent, friendly, playful, and great with families.

But she's cuter! And she's not super loud. Her meow is cute.

She also runs away at the slightest movement, but eh.

I know what cross they are, but aren't they, I dunno -- mutts? I guess it's not a mutt if it's done purposefully?

and mutts are sometimes three or more breeds. what we call Poi dogs.

and they are the best.

Aw, cute.

Ha. You underestimate the charmingness of my dog - the Grinch himself would have been welling over with love after a few minutes with her. :p
