NEW YORK -Beverage and snack maker PepsiCo Inc. said Monday it will invest $1 billion in China over the next four years to expand its manufacturing capability, research and development and sales force in the country.

The investment will fund programs to expand manufacturing capacity, mainly in interior and Western China.

It will expand local research and development facilities, build the sales force and fund brand-building and new product initiatives.

"This is our largest investment in China in the nearly 30 years we have been doing business here, and it is consistent with our broader global strategy of investing in high-growth developing markets," said PepsiCo Chairman and Chief Executive Indra Nooyi .

Nooyi was in China for a four-day visit this week.

Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo earlier this month reported a nearly 10 percent drop in third-quarter profit, missing Wall Street expectations. The company, which has focused on growing market share in quickly growing markets of Brazil, India, Russia and China, said at the time it would cut 3,300 jobs and close six plants to combat weak U.S. drink sales and a surging dollar, which will hurt profits from its rapidly growing international business.

Economically, it seems China's the place to be. Comments?

Well, PepsiCo surely is aiming high. The great corporations always do. And these eventually, and sadly, swallow the smaller corporations. In time, I think, Britain will be swallowed by the EU.

Yes it is, cheap wages and other lower costs. The free market with many other countries also means that PepsiCo can export their products over to America and other places much cheaper than producing it in those countries.

Now the article doesn't go into much detail but when they say "expand manufacturing capacity" does that mean for products sold outside of China or just inside China?

I wonder how long before we hear that Chinese made Pepsi has arsenic in it.

Meanwhile I love the coke, and will continue to drink that.

The Clown's Mindtrap:
4 oz of Vodka
4 oz of 99 Apples
Mix together with ice in a large (30-ish oz) glass with ice, then fill it to the top with seltzer (aka carbonated) water.
Have 2 or 3 of these, and suddenly the thought that a less than scrupulous Chinese businessman might decide to use arsenic as a sweetener for your soft drink doesn't seem so worrying.

It's an apple flavored liqueur (http://www.bartonbrands.com/99apples.html) that is, as the name implies, 99 proof. It is far too sweet to drink straight, but that's what the vodka and seltzer is there for.
Although it seems it might only be a US thing, you might be able to find it or at least a similar substitution.
