"Our findings suggest that television may play a significant role in the high rates of teenage pregnancy in the United States," said Anita Chandra, a behavioral scientist who led the research at RAND, a nonprofit research organization.

They go on to say that they dont intend to establish causation, but come the fuck on. Lets blame everything but the problem!

Why, because you don't like what you hear that some may have an effect on children you just wish to dismiss it.

RAND is a pretty serious organisation. They don't tend to just make stuff up. It would help if someone had a link to the actual paper, but for the time being, I see no reason to doubt a correlation between the behaviour of kids with regards to TV, and with regards to sex.

That doesn't imply causation though, as she says. It might just be that horny kids like sexy TV shows, amazingly enough.

Combine keeping kids ignorant and inundating them with sexually oriented shows, what do you think is going to happen?

Obviously, it's not one factor, it's many - from lack of parental involvement, to sex in the media, to peer pressure, to ignorance - it's all complicit.

I have two issues with this.

First of all, the children who watch "sexy" TV shows may very well have less parental influence over their television choices. This could be a continuation of less parental involvement in general, which could easily lead to higher rates of pregnancy.

Second, I tend to think that the media, like schools, mirrors society, rather than the other way around. Media responds to the desires of its clients, like most businesses. Rather than "sexy" television leading to more promiscuous youth, I think it might be that a more sexually accepting culture leads to more "sexy" programing.

Geez, just give kids proper sexual education.

1. "If you have sex, use a condom"
2. "Buy the condom at a pharmacy, make sure it's certified (i.e. won't rip during sex)"
3. Teach students how to use condoms properly
4. Point out to girls that birth control pills and condoms should be combined! Birth control pills do NOT replace condoms!
5. Teach all about FWBs. Hire a hot substitute for a demonstration. Make sure she's not married.
6. Teach about all the pressure points and special zones that make sex fun!
7. Teach about the dangers of Oral sex.

How hard can it be? And who set the proper sex age at 18? (Now granted I was a virgin at that age, but still...)

Abstinence is the only way to go and it should be taught in every public and private school. Engaging in sexual intercourse is not only inhumane but also not healthy. Sarah Palin knows this and this is why I support her for VP

I would love to see a study or three into just what having TV in our lives for so long has had on socialty and individuals.

I read an interesting book (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26037851/) recently, about how the general attitude of sex has changed in the last 25 years, about how the amount and way it was portrayed in the media and children's programing has changed and about how the statistics seem to trend towards an unhealthy attitude about relationships.

They kept repeating in the book that the problem wasn't that kids were learning about sex at an early age, but that what they were learning about it was harmful, among other things that girls are put on the earth to sexually satiate men and that men aren't supposed to have feelings of love towards women, that they are to be horny little performers and that sex is always casual.

"We're not saying we're establishing causation, but we are saying this is one factor that we were able to prospectively link to the teen pregnancy outcome," Chandra said in a phone interview.

"We can't prove that certain forms of entertainment cause teen pregnancy, but certain forms of entertainment cause teen pregnancy!"

This.

This.

And this.

It seems fairly obvious, doesn't it, that if television is the only source telling kids anything about sex, the kids are going to have sex like it appears on television.

And yes, the media are a mirror. If we don't like what we see there, guess whose fault it is?

If we don't want our kids emulating what they see on tv, what we're really saying is we don't want our kids taking after us, with our lousy self-images, our judgmental attitudes, our intellectual and moral laziness, and our hypocrisy. The "horror" at teen pregnancy strikes me as nothing more than some people acting shocked -- SHOCKED! -- to see what their own lifestyle looks like from the outside, and to see that there really are consequences to their actions.

Finally, I agree with the researchers Smunkee talked about that the general social attitude towards sex and the sexes is unhealthy. Knowing full well that entertainment media only show what the prevailing cultural attitudes are, I often think that Americans in general must be suffering from some severe mental illness or traumatic emotional disturbance that comes out most strongly in their negative and self-destructive sexual expressions. It puts me right off dating Americans.

They said there was a 'prospective link'. Where there is correlation there is the prospect of a link even if none materialises.

I read this article in the Washington Post, the paper version. Right next to it was an article about a study linking violent video games to aggression. That's a funny coincidence...

Actually, reading the article the study sounded legitimate, and they were careful to not claim anything extravagant. The biggest claim wasn't that kids who saw sex on TV were more likely to have sex, but that they were twice as likely to become pregnant (or impregnate someone). That makes sense, that seeing no consequences is likely to make you think there are no consequences.
