So these are the newest additions to the menagerie

I haven't taken pictures of them yet, because they're shy, but these links show you what they look like.
The red leg is really pretty. She's about 3" including legs, I expect her to get much bigger.
The OBT, when I see him, is gorgeous, but he's shy and defensive and hides in his burrow.
Yeah, granny likes spiders.

Cute. I always wanted a tarantula or some other alternative pet (think rat), but my parents capped it at hamsters or fish. The hamsters shtick didn't quite end as planned, the cat had other plans. And the fish always wind up neglected 7 or 8 months into the project, unless the guppies or neons have buttload of babies, then interest always perked up again for a bit. Maybe when I move out, again, I can get something deadly.

Nice...
Give them time to get used to their new homes (and the big scary thing that walks by their tank) ;)

Actually my little brother had a crayfish in his tank for 2 or 3 years. It ate all the fish he had. Not guppies, I can't remember what they were. It got a pretty big and managed to escape from the aquarium on a number of occasions. I remember one night it and the cat were having a epic battle under my sisters bed.

I have a rat. They make very good pets, though you do have to be careful. If you approach the cage the wrong way, they might mistake your hand for food. Carmella (my rat) is very intelligent and has me pegged for the sucker I am.
My fish tank is also really easy to maintain - pump, heater, filter, food and occasional water additions are all that's needed - of course I don't have guppies - I have a couple of zebras, a couple of loaches, a couple of platys and an albino catfish. One of the cats finds the fish endlessly fascinating and watches them for hours.
(I also have two more cats, two more spiders and a snake).

There are a few fish Crays won't eat. many a story of some parent putting a cray into their tank and the cray starts munching on their nice expensive fish. :p
oh and crays are the Houdini's of the animal world. give them an opening and they will escape! :D

Aww... How cute... I've always considered getting a multi-limbed pet of some kind. A tarantula, or a crab perhaps...
I'm sure your spiders are just adorable. Are they kept in seperate tanks, or in the same one?

Separate tanks. Otherwise, they'd try to eat each other.

Would make for a good show no? Invite people over, take some bets and then let them at each other. Spider fights! Or go for some variety and do different creatures, spider vs bearded dragon would be a entertaining!

For alternative pets, I had a few rats once. The darn things would escape from the cages but instead of getting into the house and reaping havoc until trapped, they would wait until night and then crawl into my bed...

Rats are very good pets actually. Surprisingly intelligent for their size. And a lot cleaner than one would expect.

The cuteness factor kind of diminishes with the fact I'd have to wash the bedsheets and matress every time it happened. But yeah, waking up cuddled next to a few lab rats is kinda cute...

Oh I know, I tried that argument for years when I was younger and much more intelligent than either of my parents.

Octopuses as well, from what I hear. I've wanted a pet octopus for ages.

nonononono!
Crays will escape using any opening they can find... So there has to be an opening.
Octopi will just lift the top of the tank then mosey on out!

Octopuses will also escape using whatever openings are available. (Plus they love crawfish...)
Oh, and it's octopuses, not octopi. The root's Greek, not Latin.

Plus octopodes are super intelligent for invertebrates.
Oh and it's actually ocotopodes I guess. Octopi is just plain wrong (although it rolls of the tongue well) and the dictionaries generally consider octopuses the correct form (it doesn't sound as good ). Whatever, I suck at grammer. But I did have the chance to go SCUBA diving this summer on Corsica and I got right up close to a number of octothingies. It was pure awesome.
EDIT: And the link I forgot. (http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/000813.html)

Indeed they are intelligent. Octopuses (octopodes is considered pedantic and is rare, while, as noted above, octopi is grounded in the mistake that octo and pod are Latin, instead of Greek (http://dictionary.oed.com/cgi/entry/00330051?single=1&query_type=word&queryword=octopus&first=1&max_to_show=10)), among other things, have been known to squirt water into various electrical sockets to extinguish offending lights.
