Going to the (drawn) chapel and I'm gonna get... married?

Just when I've thought that my adopted home has gotten as strange as it's going to get, it does something like this:

Japanese man petitions to marry comic-book character

TOKYO (AFP) — A Japanese man has enlisted hundreds of people in a campaign to allow marriages between humans and cartoon characters, saying he feels more at ease in the "two-dimensional world."

Comic books are immensely popular in Japan, with some fictional characters becoming celebrities or even sex symbols. Marriage is meanwhile on the decline as many young Japanese find it difficult to find life partners.

Taichi Takashita launched an online petition aiming for one million signatures to present to the government to establish a law on marriages with cartoon characters.

Within a week he has gathered more than 1,000 signatures through the Internet.

"I am no longer interested in three dimensions. I would even like to become a resident of the two-dimensional world," he wrote.

"However, that seems impossible with present-day technology. Therefore, at the very least, would it be possible to legally authorise marriage with a two-dimensional character?"

Befitting his desire to be two-dimensional, he listed no contact details, making it impossible to reach him for comment to explain if his campaign is serious or tongue-in-cheek.

But some people signing the petition are true believers.

"For a long time I have only been able to fall in love with two-dimensional people and currently I have someone I really love," one person wrote.

"Even if she is fictional, it is still loving someone. I would like to have legal approval for this system at any cost," the person wrote.

Japan only permits marriage between human men and women and gives no legal recognition to same-sex relationships.

Japan's fans of comic books, or "manga," sometimes go to extremes.

Earlier this month, a woman addicted to manga put out an online message seeking to kill her parents for asking her to throw away comic books that filled up three rooms.

Prime Minister Taro Aso is an avid fan of manga and recently complained that he has been too busy to read comic books since taking office.

So... comments? For an actual debate, what does NSG think of the idea of allowing a registered marriage with someone/thing that is fictional? I know it can't consent, but neither can it actually be harmed.

Friggin' sad is what this is. Why can't he just write a fanfic where he marries the object of his affection; that's what everyone else does.

So, if somebody rubs one out to the character, does that mean she's committed adultery?

Hardly surprising to here that this is from Japan.

I would think that the owners of the cartoon character should be allowed to have some say on whether their creation gets married or not and to whom.

I'll gladly preform the ceremony for them, for a small fee, but I fail to see what they would gain from legal recognition. They don't, for example, need to be able to visit the character in the hospital.

The person that created them technicallt IS them or at the very least has ownership of them... and they can decide whether or not it happens... but knowing the Japanese they will prolly just start auctioning off characters to be married and make a fortune if this goes through.

Quite silly and I think the man in question might have some obsession issues, but it's hardly the most important thing in the world. Can't say I really care.

A comic character is property of its creator.

Therefor, should not the author have to give consent to the marriage? (just joking, this topic is just silly).

As soon as the law was passed, he plans to marry long-legged manga character Mikuru Asahina.

The brown-haired girl, wearing her trademark cute bunny or maid costumes is a visitor from the future. Originally created as a character in a novel, she soon rose to manga fame.

I was thinking more along the lines of Cool World, but Who Framed Roger Rabbit is something that comes to mind as well.

I think I have about 5 dimensions sometimes.

She looks young, how old is she?

Now the question also becomes does the age limit come into effect of the fictional age or of the age of the creation?

How embarrassing would it be if the cartoon character left him at the altar, or said "NO." very publicly in their book?

I believe High Schools in Japan is Sophmore, Junior and Senior years. so if graduation is at 18, then Junior (second year) would be 16 to 18 depending on her birthdate.

and no, she didn't skip grades like Chiyo-Chan.

Ah ok yeah a whole different system.

So if she is 17 maybe 16 then depending on Japanese law she could very well be legal.
