Well, you can't say he didn't have a good run...

I really respect his work chronicling 'ordinary people'. Thanks Mr. Terkel.

Who?
I don't know, but after reading this:
"That's what history's about: the oral history of the unknowns that make the wheel go 'round. And that's what I'm interested in."

In an interview with Lou Waters on CNN in 1995, Terkel spoke about his book "Coming of Age," which explored the lives of people who have been "scrappers" all of their lives. Inside the book are the stories of people between the ages of 70 and 95 . . . Depression of the '30s, World War II that changed the whole psyche and map of the world, a Cold War, Joe McCarthy, Vietnam . . . Who are the best ones to tell the story? Those who've borne witness to it."
I know he was a jerk. Old guy talks about how he thinks old people are great.

His energy cannot be destroyed - merely transferred. A great mind and a great historian.
Above all, a very good raconteur.

He was high at the time. And also a cartoon character, as much as I am ashamed to admit my knowledge of that thing I just admited my knowledge of.
dogs know nothing of death but they still die.
Do they; don't they? Ever talken to a dog, have you? Maybe all that ruffing, and such, is part of a long, though-out discussion upon the mortality of all existence and the philosophical and psychological impact it has had upon the dog community.

You just insulted a cartoon character.

Who?

Oh, for shame! How can you not know one of your country's treasures, when even an outsider like me has heard of (and gratefully read) his work?

RIP an ornament to the craft.

american media doesn't cover real heroes very well. "mainstream" corporate media that is. if it weren't for independent news and media, amy goodman especially, i'd probably have completely forgotten who he was, like a lot of people appearently have, or have been born since most people had heard of him. but by god, he was a real hero, mixed blessing all over the place maybe some of the things, but he actually analized what he said, thought about it, and, while capturing a feeling of street level grit, remained sane, right up to the very end.

I enjoyed the stuff by him I read (Coming of Age, American Dreams, and a bit of an oral history of the Great Depression) but I don't know that much about him as a person. Sorry to hear he popped his clogs.american media doesn't cover real heroes very well. You could have looked on CNN or the NYT: they ran obituaries for him.
