One of the things I like about anime is the powerful and/or interesting female characters. Unlike western animation, they are frequently the major protagonists in a film, OVA or TV series. I have a pastiche of my favourites on my computer desktop. Here's a copy. The puzzle is: identify the character and anime. There's no reward - just the satisfaction of recognition.

Awesome sequence of animation - the moment she starts battle with the Guild and unknowingly kills the man she loves.

Just about the most compelling television I've ever seen.

20. Ritsuko Akagi (Heikoku 2), Neon Genesis Evangelion (Pure Metal)
Has anyone else noticed how most Evangelion characters have RL warships in their names? In this case "Akagi".

In Japan, about 98 percent of the people are Japanese. Even Korean or Chinese people would already stick out there, and they rarely see any black people at all (even less than whites). Thus, I don't think it's that weird they don't have a lot of black people frequent their movies. I mean, you don't expect an African movie to be full of Japanese people either, do you?

Yes, both are from Death Note. The #13 woman had to die quickly - she had the solution to the Kira problem too soon in the series.

Rei Ayanami... her last name is also the name of a class of Japanese destroyers.

Asuka Langley Soryu's name contains the names of not one but two carriers... the American USS Langley (CV-1, the first American carrier) and the Japanese IJN Soryu. It's also true that in Evangelion, the strongest characters are female. Except Gendo, of course. But that's cause he's Gendo. He's a really shitty dad, though.

Anyway, there are some really good female anime characters.

You haven't seen enough awesome anime. Rip van Winkle is not helpless or dumb, and she appears to be quite flat chested. That could just be the suit she wears, though.

Suzuka, another badass anime lady, is also not helpless or dumb (she is an assassin), and wears a kimono. Her boobs appear fairly normal for her thin frame.

Have you seen any of the anime in my OP? Name some western animation where a female is the lead character. Even a great character like Princess Fiona plays second fiddle to Shrek.

I would think that would be uncomfortable for the tentacle eyes, as fascinating a view that would be if they also had a light source. Often hentai girls have no pubic hair, but I can't assume, and what if the poor tentacles got a pube in their eye? That would be horrible.

I stop looking “Fushigi Yugi” after things start to be awfully sad. I hate it when a story becomes so dark in the middle. It is a pity that so many anime series are structured in such way.

Well elfen lied has a female lead character yet that anime isn't quite an example to woman's emancipation if you ask me.

But anyways I'll explain myself.

First i'll confess that I haven't seen every anime and the one's I have seen are the mainstream kind. The thing that just bugs me is that with every anime(or game) from japan there is always ALWAYS some helpless girl that constantly needs te be saved and screams "please don't die" to the hero in a very naggy way. And there's always ALWAYS a big boob girl who wears to small bra's. And wich the creators have spend more timne to let her breast bounce realistically then her actual personality.

And of course there's always the combination of both.

Correct. It is not an example of women's emancipation. At the same time, it isn't really sexist either. The whole issue is just kinda besides the point in that anime. It's mainly about innocence and the loss of it, and the cruelty people are capable of expressing to those who are different.
