Political Phone Calls

I had another call last night. This was about the fifth one yesterday and the second one in a fifteen minute period. The phone was upstairs. So, in a fifteen minute time period, I had to run up and down stairs twice (I was expecting a call from my daughter and the phone has a four ring limit before rolling over to voice mail). I almost feel sorry for the man at the other end of the line ... almost. He started his spiel and I cut him off. At the top of my longs, I cut him off. He valiantly tried to continue his spiel, I told him to stuff it, I wasn't voting for McCain and it was, in large part, due to these calls, then I hung up on him.

The phone has been blessedly silent since then.

I'll be so damned glad when the election is over - no matter who wins.

Have any of you been pushed over the edge by this stupidity? Who wins and who loses when the campaigning gets to the point when normally calm, easy-going people start screaming at strangers?

I haven't had any of the phone calls from the candidates. I've had a shit-ton of calls for polls, though.

I had a plan, and I think it may have paid off. It went like this:

Obama campaign worker shows up at my door. I smile, nod, agree with whatever they say for a minute, and ensure them that they have my vote.

McCain campaign worker shows up at my door. I do the same thing.

I'm thinking that they crossed me off of whatever list they were doodling on. Haven't had a single call from either candidate.

Would you have voted Mccain if they hadn't called.

I've only done it from the perspective of canvassing, i.e. how they're going to vote. Or knock up on the day reminding them to. Rather than actual persuasion. So usually it's a very short polite phonecall. And statistically it works.

This sort of call is banned in the UK, so no worries here. :)

I turn my cell phone off as soon as I get home every day.

I was wavering in favor of Obama in any case, but I was so aggravated by these calls (many of which are neither short nor polite, but are a telemarketer's version of the TV attack ad) that it just came out like that.

i confused a push poller. i hadn't paid any attention to my rep or who was even running until that moment (hey, i move around a lot, and i just treat it like the nationwide party vote it really is anyway - individual reps' positions barely matter except in primaries or if they are lying about party affiliation), but it sure was nice of them to tell me all the awful awful things the challenger was in favor of. gay marriage and abortions for everyone? sign me the fuck up.

Gallup called me, asked if I were going to vote today (last week) if I would vote McCain or Obama, when I said neither they said I was "undecided" and hung up.

I haven't had many calls for me this election since I recently re-registered as a party who isn't able to get on the ballot here.....but my husband gets a lot of calls (he's registered as a Republican but is actually an independent).

"I'm calling from Sally Kern's office, am I speaking to a registered voter?"
"yes"
"We're calling to get the vote out for Sally, can we count on your vote?"
"nope"
"why not?"
"She's an idiot and a bigot and I don't vote for idiots or bigots"
"um......uh.....well, it was nice talking to you"
"likewise"

Iirc it's only automated cold calling that is banned. Not sure why I know it, not like some random party I may or may not be affiliated with go their knuckles rapped over this sort of thing:rolleyes:

The robot-calls annoy me, especially since they often call at stupid times (like on Saturday morning when I'm trying to sleep, or during dinner). I don't mind calls from actual humans half so much, since they tend to go away as soon as I say that I've decided who I'm voting for and won't be swayed.

I've also made some calls for the Obama campaign, and I didn't get the impression I annoyed people too much. Mostly, I just ask them if they are planning on voting for Obama; if they say yes, I say "Great! Be sure to vote November 4th!" and if they say no or undecided or anything, I direct them to more information about Obama if they want it. Not too terrible, really, I figure. :)

It'd be nice if we got calls from you instead of robo-calls. We've gotten at least six different McCain robo-calls trying to connect Obama with terrorists and accuse him of being an evil Muslim and other similar stuff.

We also got a robo-call to support Amendment 59, which we're already doing and thus was redundant.

You don't get robocalls telling you "It's important that you know that Ahmadinejad has been palling around with terrorists...."?

I might get calls from political staffers but I don't speak Arabic, and since they don't speak French (which is the only language I'll speak to the Kuwaitis who randomly seem to call me) they generally hang up on me.

I get calls from both the democrats and the republicans. seems my friends as a joke donated 5 dollars to each party under my name with my phone number. they call about twice a day each asking for money.
