This is a fairly simple thread, just post you favourite movie soundtracks. I'm curious not only as to what they are but also why you like them and why you think they suit the movie they are in.

At the moment mine is from Sunshine (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rWlXU2DeYkQ&feature=related).

The song just seems to perfectly encapsulate the final hope for mankind that is the main storyline of the film as well as the isolation of the main characters.

One of the guys in my class at high school had the surname Robinson and we had a music teacher who sang Mrs. Robinson every time he saw him.

I think it gave him a complex in the end.
Cannot think of a name

Naked Lunch, Alfie (original), Mickey One...Ennio Morriconne

Heavy Metal

Hell yes. But it is almost the other way around, a collection of classic heavy metal songs with a movie attached. :hail:

Repo Man is a favourite of mine.

Ned Kelly, although a good movie, would be better without the soundtrack.
Zombie PotatoHeads

'nother vote for 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' and 'Repo Man'
Also:
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Midnight Cowboy
2001
Full Metal Jacket
Reservoir Dogs
Kill Bill

Ennio Morriconne is God. And Burt Bacharach is Jesus.

My favorite, of all time is Interview With the VampireĀ“s OST. Elliot Goldenthal really captured the essence of the book, IMO, for the film with his music.

Many soundtracks that Ennio Morricone and John Williams have made.

Those are great pieces of music.

And when it comes to soundtrack compilations, you can't really go wrong with the soundtracks that come along the Quentin Tarantino movies. Those are awesome.

And I'd also own soundtracks made by Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, Batman, The Thin Red Line) if they weren't so freaking expensive to buy.

Though I don't own any of his soundtracks, the music in the Kevin Smith movies is pretty good, too.

I have. However, you forgot the original: Yojimbo. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055630/)

As for Heavy Metal, wonderful. The longest music video ever.

Oh, you're welcome!

It's a great movie. A little vintaged, sure, B/W 1961. But the storytelling is good. And you can tell how much Dollar copied from it.

I have all three movies on DVD. Come to think of it, I should really watch them in a row one day.

I'll gladly second Sunshine...that movie rocked my socks, including the soundtrack.

I'll say that Dark City, Gettysburg, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy are all amongst my favorites, but my all-time favorite score is from Kingdom of Heaven.

And Yojimbo was based on "Red Harvest". So detective story becomes samurai story becomes western. Just goes to show that a good plot goes a long way.

Footloose -- the movie/music-video hybrid just before it was overdone.
Gothic -- Thomas Dolby, 'nuff said.
The Power of One -- some of Hans Zimmer's best work.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off -- with the gem cover of The Smiths ("Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want") by Dream Academy.
Spellbound -- Miklos Rosza's masterpiece.
Grease -- I was eight, of course I loved it.

However, most iconic has to be Apocalypse Now.

I own that soundtrack, too - but to be honest, aside from the Ride of the Valkyries it's pretty lame. Platoon has a much better soundtrack.

That movie was crap! It didn't made any justice to the awesome book it's based upon. The OST is passable, but the moview was shitty.

Pretty much all of Guy Ritchie's movies, even the awful ones, have amazing soundtracks.

Most Ennio Morricone stuff captures the mood really well. The Coen Brothers make great use of music, particularly the banjo fills in Raising Arizona and the whole of O Brother, Where Are Thou?. Tin Men has the Fine Young Cannibals at their grooviest. I guess I like quite a lot of the songs off Lost in Translation, Garden State, Juno. Aimee Mann's Magnolia stuff is fantastic.

If I had to pick one, I guess I might go for Dazed and Confused. Now, I don't really go for hair rock, and most of the music from the film I wouldn't ordinarily listen to. My reason for picking it, though, is that it does what a soundtrack should really aspire to: capture the overall mood of the film in a way that can shift from unobtrusive backdrop to attention-grabbing foreground as the story dictates.

I'd agree with Sunshine, not because I specifically remember the music, but because the film was very enjoyable and the music would have played a large part in my enjoyment of it.

I find the best soundtracks are the kind that's not noticeable most of the time, but that sits in the background highlighting the specific moods and undercurrents of the plot. Prominent motifs can then be used as a kind of leitmotif to show connections between characters/events, but are not a requirement.

So, examples are:
Requiem for a Dream - Clint Mansell
Fistful of Dollars/Few dollars more/G-B-U - Ennio Morricone
The Hours - Philip Glass
Star Wars (original trilogy) - John Williams (though I loathe the Special Edition additions to RotJ's ending)
Schlinder's List - John Williams

Other films in a similar place (for me) as Sunshine:
Children of Men
The Fountain
Gladiator
Edward Scissorhands
Pan's Labyrinth
