So, I'm too Old to be Playing NationStates...

 Well, that is according to one individual I've encountered in the game portion and not here in NSG. For some reason, this person has decided that they will routinely remind me that I'm 25 years old and thus I shouldn't be playing NationStates.

So far I've resisted the urge to rant about this here but I've had it. I got another telegram yesterday (and it was reported due to the nature of the contents and not the fact that my age was brought up, though, it is getting old ;) ), but I still can't believe that this person thinks my age is so important.

Around the same time I received it, I showed it to another member of my region, SKP, who you guys here may know as Articoa, and they reminded me that many of the lovely NSGers are well over 20 years of age, and some are over thirty.

So, what say you all... are we, the people who are 25 years and older, too old to be playing internet games? This is open to those younger than 25 as well.

There's a huge, long story behind it and it's mostly petty.

He's 10 years my junior.

I would but then he'll just go on the lawn of another property. That's what I get for being a colonial/puppet master. ;)

What? Of course not. There's only very few things that it is unacceptable to do after a certain age (such as hanging round a primary school playground, for example:p). I'm 20 and some people would probably say I shouldn't be watching as many cartoons as I do because I'm "too old". If you enjoy something, then you're self-evidently not too old for it, I'd say.

I've got 10 years on you, Kryozerkia. Frankly, I couldn't care less whether people think I'm too old. After all, I probably have the maturity of an 11-year-old. :p

If people get on your case because you're "old," it says more about them than it does about you. But you're right to report the contents of an abusive telegram.

If you ask me, how old you are hasn't the slightest bearing on whether or not it is 'appropriate' for you to play NationStates.

For one thing, many players here are 25+. I am 22, so I'm rapidly getting to it.

I don't intend to stop once I turn 25, I assure you, especially not when there happen to be many players on NS who are 30+.

I'd also like to point out that this game was developed from a serious novel, a book written for both adults and youngsters to read it, which dealt with some heavy political concepts, such as excessive consumerism and so on.

I see no reason why being 25 makes you too old in that person's eyes, unless he is a lousy RPer, and wants to eliminate possible rivals more mature than he is by making them feel immature and silly.

Yes, that last part was a joke. Mostly. I could see somebody doing that, and it sickens me to realize how possible it is.

NSG is no different. Actually, there's even less reason why age should be important here. A lot of good discussions happen on NSG, and I'm sure many of those involved are, in fact, beyond 25.

In short, play on, old timers! Don't give a second thought to what anybody tells you about being too old to play! :)

Dumbass kids have no respect for their elders... *grumbles*

Nobody has dared to criticize me for my age on NSG, but then I don't RP here.

But I have run into the same kinds of remarks on an MMORPG I used to play regulary (and will again if I ever find the time to upgrade my computer). Like NS -- and a lot of games, I think -- that one has a very mixed age crowd. A forum survey put the 18-25 year old and 35-45 year old demographics as the two largest player groups. The game-children were horrified to find out they were members of a grown-up club every time it was pointed out to them. Every so often one of them would figure out in chat channels that someone they were discussing monster stats with was a parent and a homeowner and way too old to get carded at bars, and they'd get all shocked and puritanical and "what are YOU doing here?!", until all the 30+ channel lurkers spoke up. Then the youngster would be like, "My god, they're everywhere!!!"

I think young people find something they like and imagine they have "discovered" it and are the only ones who know about it. I remember the time a few years ago, when teenagers would excitedly tell me about this amazing vintage singer they discovered, and did I ever hear of him? His name is Tom Jones.

It's cute.

25 is old? Good lord.

I believe I first pulled a voting lever in the Jimmy Carter election. I was politically active in the Nixon/McGovern race. Don't tell me I'm too old to participate in a political satire game.

And while I don't roleplay in NS forums, I do own a brick and mortar role-play gaming store. We just celebrated our 28th year in business. I'd think I can safely state that I know a little about RP gaming when I state that there are no age limits among my customer base.

No, but seriously, age doesn't matter. Hell, older you get, far as I'm concerned, better off you are playing this. Good for world relations. I'd recommend it to George Bush or Dick Cheney, but then they'd try to use guns or talk to us or something.

No, the kid's 15. Of course, not that it matters when the person has the maturity of a three year old in the middle of a classic shopping mall tantrum because the line up for Santa is an hour long and mommy doesn't want to wait that long.

They called me old because they're running out of insults. I found myself wondering if this kid could ever be arsed to find himself a thesaurus - he was never creative with his insults. That's why he's targeting my age now.

Anyone else ever get picked on for something absolutely petty because the person had no other insults to use?

I don't think age matters at all. Since most of us grew up in the "video game era", we'll more than likely be the first generation to actually play video games until the day we die.

Btw, I've been in regions where the delegate is in his/her 30s... it's (age) not important. In fact you can learn interesting things from those older than yourself and the younger players could also have interesting insights to contribute.

Absolutely. I'm routinely harped on for being "too old". As if the Internet had an age restriction.

In the chat box of kdice (a dice-based Risk-like multiplayer strategy game), I am regularly made fun of because I choose to -- wait for it -- accurately spell and punctuate what I type.

Seriously. "Who the fuck types like that?" they ask, without capital W, the question mark or half the words correctly spelled. Folks, I was taught to type correctly. I take the time because I'm a big fan of disambiguation. Even my text messages are as correct as I can make them. But disagree with someone in a chat log, and they will jump all over that like cats on catnip. Try to say something even remotely contrary to the prevailing winds in the room, and you'll get a snarky comment on your profile mentioning your age and how you like to type. I got some negative attention just for asking someone not to use "gay" as a pejorative.

I also get slagged for my vocabulary. Folks, I KNOW these words because I've READ these words and have had to look them up myself in order to understand what I've read. They stick in my memory (as taking the time to investigate them tends to leave an imprint), and when the same situation comes up, I use the word again. I laugh off the insults I get, but it does get on my nerves, especially when the word in question is standard high-school English level. I was once pilloried for using "prerogative" -- a word Bobby Brown used in a hip-hop song, fer cryin' out loud. The word's good enough for a coke fiend to score a hit with, but type it online and suddenly I'm accused of being Derwood Kirby?

I say let 'em eat verbosity and joke 'em if they can't take a fuck.

EDIT: I'm in my late 30s.

I've personally found that the older the player, the more mature and well thought out their RP is.

BTW: You need to point out that on the point of gaming, the target audiance for most PS3/XBox 360/PC games is the 18-35 year old male. Hell one of the Wii's biggest audiances is surprisingly people between the ages of 30 and 45.

Supposedly, in the USA, if you are over 25 and you are on any site that is visited by children, you are a pedophile.Or just a Catholic priest. XD

He's 10 years my junior.
Perhaps that is your problem.....taking a 15 year old way too seriously?

Two Mod posts directly after mine, either that's just coincidental, creepy or that can't be good.

Incase it's the third one, I didn't do it and I was just visiting.:p:rolleyes:

But when I take 10 years off my age I'm still a grown-up!

And? I never said the 10 year thing was a fixed rule. If they can do the 60 is the new 50, 50 is the new 40 and 30 is the new 20. Then I don't see why you can't do the same with as many years as you want. Or, you can always do what I hear a lot of other people are doing. From now on, ever birthday you subtract a year from your current age. Who said you had to add? That's why we have integers.

Isn't math fun!

BTW, I still have my huge Lego collection completely intact and assembled ready for use incase your inner child ever decides it's done throwing a tantrum.

Perhaps that is your problem.....taking a 15 year old way too seriously?

Or perhaps not seriously enough...

Well, of course it's coincidental -- the coincidence being that Kat and I must've both read the "Hey, Guys, Keep An Eye Out For This One!" memo when we signed in. :D

I mean, who usually reads the boss's memos?
