Fable II

looks like there isn't a thread on this yet, so i figured i'd make one. anybody got it yet? any thoughts?

i got mine yesterday and spent most of the evening playing it, and some time this morning. i haven't got that far yet, largely because once i got to Bowerstone i spent ages getting money to buy all the market stalls to build up a little property empire ;)

my overall feeling is that its quite excellent, if nothing spectacularly special just yet... just very well polished. i'm finding the control system a bit sluggish, but surprisingly i'm actually getting attached to my dog (quite something considering i'm a cat man :p).

I own it. Bought it yesterday after I got off of work.
Didn't play much, just enough to get a feel for the game. I don't like the lock-on only aiming, but I don't really have any other complaints so far.

I heard it is once again a huge let down from the world-peace-creating, cancer-curing, six-pack-abs-giving, fewer-calories-same-great-taste, eighth-wonder-of-the-world game that Peter Molyneaux once again way over hyped it into being.

That's why I never listen to the "ZOMG, THEY'RE GOING TO REVOLUTIONIZE TEH GAMERZ WORLD!" idiots.

I'm actually enjoying the game, because I don't have any out-of-proportion expectations about it.

Well, in this case the idiot was the lead developer.

He promised the world with Fable, and while it was a very solid RPG game, it was nothing like what he said it would be. I remember the lead up to its release. Every month, Molyneaux would put out a press statement detailing all the promised features that wouldn't be making the release date. It upset a lot of people, especially the pre-order crowd. Did he learn from this, though? No. He promised the world again, and failed to deliver. There's a story about the boy who cried wolf that he might read.

Which particular features that Molyneux promised this time haven't made it to the final version?

I haven't played it myself yet, so this is all based on what I've read. But, from what I've been told, it's not nearly as open-ended as he claimed, it's not nearly as non-linear as he claimed; the game is still clearly defined by paths from one objective to another, there are just more paths now. Interaction with people is less an experience and more a mini-game like in Oblivion (if you've played that). Multiplayer is not as robust as he hyped it. It's somewhat upsetting that you cannot import your actual character into someone else's game. Jobs are, on the whole, boring and meaningless mini-games, which he specifically said they would NOT be.

All told, it sounds like a really great game. And it also sounds like a lot more of the promised features have made it into the game. But, again, from what I've read and what other people have said, it fails to meet expectations because of the absurdly high expectations Molyneaux set. Both Fable and Fable II wouldn't get nearly as many marks down in reviews if Molyneaux hadn't gone off promising the world.

People should expect this of developers by now.
With the twenty+ million most game development cycles are costing now, selling and advertising are all that matters. Gamer satisfaction is just a plus.
Yes, I know, it should be the main concern, but you can't tell that to the company who just spent millions making aforementioned game.

well, having played it, i'd disagree. Moleneaux has learned his lesson - he says so himself on one of the many interview videos available on youtube (iirc he says he feels 'stupid' about what he promised for Fable 1). Fable 2 has actually matched my expectations thus far. it has matched what i expected from Fable 1 as well, but that's better late than never eh? ;)

perhaps i learned not to listen to the BS after Fable 1 lol. it seems to me to be as non-linear as GTA IV, and multiplayer (local co-op, at least) is like any of the recent Lego games (ie jump in and play). the jobs, however, are mindless minigames, which is a shame, but for me at least, they were not a reason why i was looking forward to this game. other than that i haven't played enough yet to judge, but for me it lives up to my expectations and i'm happy with it

it only came out on Friday here, but me too. the story this time kinda jumps you in without too much of a story regarding training or anything indicating how you became such a good fighter, which is where the Guild came in last time. i also miss the easy way of getting quests, but i suppose this is realistic or something

Heh. Well-put. :)

I enjoyed the first one, but that was probably due in part to *not* having been exposed to the hype, having chosen it more-or-less randomly from the shelf at Blockbuster. So I had fun with the first one. I don't have the hardware to run Fable II, but I'd like to hear more about how it compares to the first, as everyone gets deeper into it.
