Now this is ridiculous. It is!

http://news.aol.com/article/woman-jailed-for-killing-virtual-spouse/223052
TOKYO (Oct. 23) - A 43-year-old player in a virtual game world became so angry about her sudden divorce from her online husband that she logged on with his password and killed his digital persona, police said Thursday.
The woman, who has been jailed on suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, used his ID and password to log onto the popular interactive game "Maple Story" to carry out the virtual murder in May, a police official in the northern city of Sapporo said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of department policy.
"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.
The woman, a piano teacher, had not plotted any revenge in the real world, the official said.
She has not yet been formally charged. If convicted, she could face up to five years in prison or a fine up to $5,000.
Players in "Maple Story" create and manipulate digital images called "avatars" that represent themselves, while engaging in relationships, social activities and fighting monsters and other obstacles.
In virtual worlds, players often abandon their inhibitions, engaging in activity online that they would never do in the real world. For instance, sex with strangers is a common activity.
The woman used login information she got from the 33-year-old office worker when their characters were happily married to kill the character. The man complained to police when he discovered that his online avatar was dead.
The woman was arrested Wednesday and taken 620 miles from her home in southern Miyazaki to be detained in Sapporo, where the man lives, the official said.
The police official said he did not know if she was married in the real world.
Bad online behavior is usually handled within the rules set up by online worlds, which can ban miscreants or take away their virtual possessions.
In recent years, virtual lives have had consequences in the real world.
When bad deeds lead to criminal charges, prosecutors have found a real-world activity to cite — as in this case, in which the woman was charged with inappropriate computer access.
In August, a woman was charged in Delaware with plotting the real-life abduction of a boyfriend she met through the virtual reality Web site "Second Life."
In Tokyo, a 16-year-old boy was charged with stealing the ID and password from a fellow player of an online game in order to swindle virtual currency worth $360,000.
Virtual games are popular in Japan, and "Second Life" has drawn a fair number of Japanese participants. They rank third by nationality among users, after Americans and Brazilians.

Come on Japan, virtual games are just that... games. Now, this poses a new question. Would you kill your virtual spouse if he/she wants an online divorce or cheats on you? Comment NSG. Comment.

The news title is ridiculous, because that's not what she's being jailed for.

She's being jailed for illegally accessing his account, which could conceivably contain sensitive information, and furthermore, she didn't just access it - she deleted it.

I am sure there are some laws against that, but nothing the news write or say will turn this into a "woman arrested for virtual murder" because that's not what she was arrested for.

Hacking is still hacking, even if it was done for something stupid. If what she did is a crime in Japan, then she has screwed herself, hasn't she?

I was surprised that just hacking alone, without proof of something like identity theft, would get her arrested, but hey, now we know how seriously Japan takes this sort of thing.

Well japan regulated this sort of thing after hackers stole some rare everquest item that no longer dropped back in the day, and the account holders committed suicide. Rather then go through life with a toned down toon.

I mean, I can understand her getting arrested for identioty-theft and hacking into someon else's computer. The "killing" thing sounds hilariously stupid. But this Everquest thing you mentioned borders into sad. Committing suicide for having a toned down toon is sad, even laughable.

I believe this would still be a sort of identity theft. That's a serious problem, no matter what the motivation. Add the "killing" and you have a way to sell papers.

I laughed a lot when I stumbled upon the news. Pressing charges for the identity theft is understandable. But it's incredible, after reading what Greed and Death wrote, that people would go to such extremes on account of a game. (and I'm not referring to the virtual spouse killing)

Oh, I know. Identity-theft is a serious offense here in Spain, partly because the problem the government has encountered with stolen credit cards used by Al-Qaeda terrorist cells in our territory.

For example, an al-Qaida terrorist cell in Spain used stolen credit cards in fictitious sales scams and for numerous other purchases. They kept purchases below amounts where identification would need to be presented. They also used stolen telephone and credit cards for communications back to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Lebanon, etc. Extensive use of false passports and travel documents were used to open bank accounts where money for the mujahideen movement was sent between countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc.

The thing about humans which you may not have noticed, is that we are emotional and irrational creatures. While you upon your internet high horse might find things like this "hilariously stupid", she had obviously grown a strong attachment to this man, and the incident is no more or less silly than a spouse throwing a tantrum in the real world. Rest assured that undoubtedly there are people in the world who would find actions taken in your own life equally ridiculous, naive or childish. That you find a suicice under any conditions "laughable" says enough.

But JuNii, think about it! Do you know how much money you could make with such a game. If Grand Theft Auto was a success, Virtual Prision would be one heck of a game.

oh Gods... now I'm incorporating Escape Attempts! success is measured by how far you get from the prision!!!

Interprision sporting events to replace Raids!!!

having the Warden as the UberBoss...

Remember, you heard this idea first right HERE! :p

And then other players can join in as cops and guards, either idealistic or rotten. And they can participate in manhunts during break outs.

It's gonna be even better than WoW. Heck, you can branch out and make a medieval/fantasy style prision game. You can be the next George Lucas, with movie and toy franchises!!!:eek2::eek2:

Now I'm going home. Brain-storm for this game!!! NSG-made!!!

a theraputic spin.

and add to that the 'scared straight' tactics of prision life... I think the parents might support this.

So what's to stop her from creating even more characters? I'd personally be a spree killer and try to wipe out as many people as possible.

I used to do that in The Sims for PS2 when I was in Iraq in 2003. My buddies and I shared a memory card and thus our "families" were in the same little neighborhood. I'd invite their family members over and build walls around them until they starved and died, and then put the urns in my little trophy room. Later my buddies would say "Hey, where the hell is X?" to which I'd reply "Huh, I don't know, it's crazy that they'd just disappear".

Let me ask you all this hypothetically:

You get into a fight with your girlfriend (or boyfriend, however you swing) over something really stupid (you forgot to put the toilet seat down for the umpteenth time, or you went out with friends and forgot it was your anniversary). In a rage, they log into your NationState account or your MMORPG of choice and delete the data/account. Now what?

Heck, let's take it into the real world that most folks have. Let's say that your pissed off ex logs into your e-mail account/myspace/facebook/cellphone and delete/turn off the account. Perhaps you were e-mailing back and forth with a company that was deciding if they were going to hire you...perhaps your mother had left a text message or voice mail that let you know if your dad got out of a major surgery ok or not.

Now think about just the fact that it was your account that you worked on to 'perfect' and now it's gone? How about the fact that all those messages you saved were your's and no one elses? Some could feel it's a violation of your privacy and akin to having someone walk into your home/apartment, steal your things and make a bon-fire out of them. Other's could say it's just annoying and of no real importance.

In any case, it's still a crime punishable by jail time and a fine. In many cases it's a felonly. Regardless of being a game or being someone's e-mail account or even someone's physical assets, this person has illegally accessed someone else's 'domain' and destroyed their 'property', and she is going to be punished for it. I don't see the big deal or need for debate.

*Runs to protect WOW account*

uh....this is really old news. Been happening since about six months after WoW's release. Mainly it's the gold sellers and such that will hack some accounts, auction off or just plain sell off items on a character, send all the gold to a newly created throw away toon, then transfer the gold to the main account. They then either deactivate the account they hacked or just delete the toon. It's pretty common. Thought nearly all WoW players knew this. :(

But of course they will. And the game has potential. It might actually sell and be a top game for years to come. Kids get to fight and shit while being taught a lesson in not killing online ppl. A masterpiece!!

"Yes, this game taught me not to take out my rage in the form of on-line violence. that's why I only commit actual acts of violence in Real Life..."

gotta think of some safeguards like Mythbusters did. make sure that anything that might be created in the prision is huge, unweldly and has a high percentile of failing.

In a rage, they log into your NationState account or your MMORPG of choice and delete the data/account. Now what?

I would be annoyed... but then if I was stupid enough to give someone else my password I've earned account deletion.

Again, this is why you don't give people your passwords. Like really, I've considered taking out a safety deposit box, putting my passwords in that and letting everyone take care of loose ends if I die.

Yeah, which is why you don't give your password to anyone else.

I mean, maybe I'm a little paranoid because I dated a guy who went through my computer and read several things I had saved away while I was at work and I know he would have gone through emails or bulletin board private messages if I'd left a browser open, but I don't give anyone my passwords and I hide my diary before someone comes over if I'm going to be leaving them in my room alone.

What game was it where someone was selling game gold for real money and he ripped a player off and the player found him and shot him?

Talk about immersion.
Think about the potential such an environment could have but for a beneficial purpose rather than entertainment... friggin' amazing.

It also shows a frightening lack of self control for that woman who went into his account and deleted all of his stuff. It's like high school or something.

Make ramen noodles the prime material of construction. Everyone adores ramen, and it´s not deadly (unless one´s allergic to egg-based noodles or the Chinese in general).

In lineage II they would normally go to noob land equip a rookie item (cant be dropped) and kill off low characters until the toon turned so red(can be attacked no penalty and will drop items on death) they could never get enough monsters to go white again.

Come on guys! The dick didn't love her. He proved that by calling the cops for hacking his account and deleting his obsessive time waster.
Let's not get hung up over "imaginary" property here.

I will never buy and sell "virtual property" either. I'd rather buy something tangible like the "Brooklyn Bridge".
In Australia, this would never have got to court.
